The practical differences are their colors, GMT-hand colors, original straps and listed weights. Grand Seiko specifies luminous material on the hands, indexes and bezel of both watches, but its published specifications do not establish how bright the lume is or how long it lasts.
What is the difference between the SBGJ237 and SBGJ239?
These are closely related Sport Collection GMT watches built around the same stainless-steel case and Caliber 9S86. The SBGJ237 pairs a midnight-blue dial with a blue-and-white sapphire bezel, white GMT hand and steel bracelet. The SBGJ239 has a green dial, black-and-white sapphire bezel, red GMT hand and brown crocodile leather strap. The different colors make the home-time hand visually distinct in different ways, but Grand Seiko does not provide a comparative legibility test.

Specifications and regional price snapshots are from Grand Seiko’s official SBGJ237 product page and official SBGJ239 product page, accessed in 2026. The pages list 44.2 mm diameter, 50.6 mm lug-to-lug and 14.4 mm thickness for both models.
How bright is the lume?
Grand Seiko specifies LumiBrite on the hands, indexes and bezel for both references. That identifies where luminous material is applied; it does not tell you its brightness after exposure to light, how quickly it fades, or whether one model is easier to read at night. The published specifications provide no comparative lume measurements, so claims that either watch glows brighter or longer are not established by these sources.
#1 Best Overall
- 24-hour hand (dual time display function)
- Power Reserve Approx. 55 hours
- See-through case back
The official placement is useful if nighttime visibility is a priority: luminous material is specified not just on the hands and hour indexes, but also on the bezel. It is not a substitute for seeing the watches in the lighting conditions in which you plan to use them.
How does the GMT work, and can it show three time zones?
Both watches have a 24-hour GMT hand and a rotating 24-hour bezel. Grand Seiko describes the bezel as enabling three time zones to be displayed simultaneously. The brand says the white GMT hand on the SBGJ237 shows home time; its SBGJ239 product page assigns that role to the red GMT hand. The bezel provides an additional reference alongside the watch’s main time display.
Rank #2
- Comes with individual box
- 24 hour hand (dual time display function)
- Day difference + 45 to -35 seconds
- Mechanical automatic movement (with hand winding)
- Lasts approximately 41 hours on maximum winding
The shared mechanism is Caliber 9S86, an automatic movement with manual winding, 37 jewels and an approximately 55-hour power reserve, according to Grand Seiko’s product specifications. The manufacturer lists a mean daily rate of +5 to −3 seconds per day and, separately, normal-use accuracy of +8 to −1 seconds per day. These are distinct manufacturer figures under different stated conditions; they should not be treated as interchangeable guarantees for every wearer.
How do the size and weight affect the choice?
On paper, both watches have the same substantial case dimensions: 44.2 mm across, 50.6 mm lug-to-lug and 14.4 mm thick. The published weights differ: Grand Seiko lists 188 g for the bracelet-equipped SBGJ237 and 122 g for the leather-strap SBGJ239. That makes the SBGJ239 the lighter listed configuration, but the weight difference comes with a different band as well as the same-size case.
Rank #3

- BLUE & BLACK BEZEL: with a 24-hour bezel and easy-to-read fourth hand, this GMT watch helps you keep time as you travel
- DURABLE UTILITY: these versatile men’s wrist watches feature a 42.5mm stainless steel watch case and bracelet, for a classic, timeless look.

Dimensions and listed mass cannot determine how either watch will fit or feel on an individual wrist. The SBGJ237 product page specifies a 21 mm band width and a maximum wrist perimeter of 201 mm; those particular measurements are not stated on the cited SBGJ239 page. Neither figure alone establishes comfort.
