The Grand Seiko SBGW295 is a 500-piece limited-edition re-creation of Grand Seiko’s first watch, released in 2023 to mark 110 years since Japan’s first wristwatch. Its black urushi dial has maki-e detailing, its case is Brilliant Hard Titanium, and it is powered by the hand-wound Caliber 9S64. Grand Seiko’s launch prices—about $13,800 in the US and ¥1,815,000 in Japan—are historical figures, not current price or availability information.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGW295?
Grand Seiko introduced the SBGW295 as a re-creation of its first watch, from 1960. The 2023 release commemorated the 110th anniversary of the Laurel, which Grand Seiko identifies as Japan’s first wristwatch, produced in 1913. The edition was limited to 500 watches worldwide; Grand Seiko’s Japanese announcement specified that 100 were allocated to Japan. Grand Seiko’s US launch announcement and its Japanese announcement describe the release and its anniversary context.

How are the dial and straps made?
Urushi lacquer and maki-e
The black dial combines traditional urushi lacquer with maki-e detailing. Grand Seiko says the curved dial and lettering take their cues from the 1960 original; the lacquer and maki-e treatments distinguish this anniversary edition. The result brings decorative craft to a restrained, vintage-profile design.
Two different leather straps
The watch comes with a second leather strap. One uses yoroiori, a weaving technique associated in Grand Seiko’s announcement with samurai armor: an artisan interlaces thin strips of calf leather and fabric. The other strap is leather selected by the manufacturer for softness, texture and comfort. The watch has a three-fold Brilliant Hard Titanium clasp with push-button release.

Its published mean daily rate is +5 to −3 seconds per day. That is the manufacturer’s stated rate for the movement, not a guarantee of the accuracy of any individual watch in everyday wear.
