The Grand Seiko SLGW005 is a 1,200-piece worldwide limited edition that re-creates the 1968 45GS in stainless steel. It pairs a 38.8 mm case with the hand-wound Caliber 9SA4, which beats at 36,000 times per hour and has an 80-hour stated power reserve. Grand Seiko’s US listing gives a price of $9,700 and currently marks the watch no longer available; that status applies to the US listing, not worldwide inventory.
What the SLGW005 re-creates
Grand Seiko introduced the 45GS in 1968, a year after the 44GS. The brand credits the 44GS with establishing the Grand Seiko Style; the 45GS followed that design language and introduced the company’s first manual-winding, high-beat movement, Caliber 4520. The modern SLGW005 carries that lineage forward with a contemporary movement and caseback rather than reproducing every detail of the original.
Its off-white dial reproduces historic markings: the SEIKO signature, GS lettering, “HI-BEAT” and “36000” inscriptions, and the Daini Seikosha emblem associated with the original’s origin. One visible departure is the exhibition caseback: the modern watch has a sapphire display back, while the original 45GS had a closed back. Dimensions can help narrow fit expectations, but they do not establish how the watch will sit on a particular wrist. The 19 mm lug width is the stated strap measurement; compatibility alone does not guarantee that another strap will match the watch’s proportions.

What Caliber 9SA4 offers
Caliber 9SA4 is a hand-wound, 10-beat movement. Grand Seiko describes a dual-impulse escapement and twin barrels as features supporting its stated 80-hour reserve, and highlights the tactile and audible character of winding. The 36,000-beats-per-hour frequency connects the contemporary movement to the high-beat identity of the 45GS, while the hand-winding format distinguishes it from an automatic watch. Grand Seiko’s official movement instructions provide the brand’s guidance for operating its watches.
The accuracy figure is a static specification, not a promise of the rate every wearer will observe in daily use. The available specifications also do not establish comparative reliability or real-world wrist performance.

The SLGW005 is most relevant to a buyer seeking a historically linked Grand Seiko with a hand-wound high-beat movement, rather than automatic convenience. Before pursuing one, compare its 38.8 mm diameter, 10.4 mm thickness and 19 mm lug width against watches you already find comfortable; consider whether an 80-hour stated reserve and daily winding routine suit your habits; and decide whether the limited-edition dial and 45GS connection matter more than stronger water-resistance specifications or easier current availability. The published 30 m rating is described by Grand Seiko’s US page as splash resistant, not as a swimming specification.
