Grand Seiko introduced three U.S.-exclusive, katana-inspired Heritage Collection watches in August 2023: the black-dial SBGA489, green-dial SBGA491 and red-dial SBGA493. Their textures reference different aspects of Japanese sword steel and forging; the watches do not use katana steel. All three share a 40 mm stainless-steel case and Spring Drive caliber 9R65. The SBGA493 is the limited edition, capped at 500 pieces.

What is the Grand Seiko Katana Collection?

“Katana Collection” is a useful shorthand for the trio, not a formal collection name established in Grand Seiko’s announcement. In its August 17, 2023 press release, the brand presented the watches as U.S.-exclusive models in its Heritage Collection, inspired by the materials and craft of the Japanese sword. Grand Seiko described the katana as “a world-renowned masterpiece in steel.”

The launch comprised three references: SBGA489, SBGA491 and SBGA493. The first two were announced for August 2023 and the third for September 2023. Grand Seiko said sales would be through its U.S. boutiques, Boutique Online and select authorized retailers operated in the United States. Grand Seiko’s launch announcement provides the original release details.

What do the Grand Seiko katana dials represent?

Grand Seiko’s design story begins with iron sand heated in a tatara furnace to create tamahagane, the steel used in traditional Japanese swordmaking. The brand describes two variations: kawagane, the high-carbon outer steel, and shingane, the strong inner core. The dial patterns are visual references to these materials and to forging—not claims that the dials are made from sword steel or reproduce the blade-making process.

  • SBGA489: Its black dial evokes kawagane, the hard outer steel.
  • SBGA491: Its dark green dial refers to shingane, the resilient inner core.
  • SBGA493: Its deep red dial and yellow gold-tone accents suggest a heated blade and the forging process. Its pattern evokes sparks radiating from hammer strikes.

How do the SBGA489, SBGA491 and SBGA493 differ?

The documented differences are the dial treatment, release timing and limited-edition status. Grand Seiko’s announcement gives all three the same case dimensions and caliber 9R65 specifications; it does not establish meaningful differences in their cases or movements.

Model Dial and inspiration Edition status Recommended U.S. launch price
SBGA489 Black; kawagane, the hard outer steel No limited quantity stated in the launch announcement USD 5,600
SBGA491 Dark green; shingane, the resilient inner core No limited quantity stated in the launch announcement USD 5,600
SBGA493 Deep red with yellow gold-tone accents; heated blade and forging sparks U.S. limited edition of 500 pieces USD 6,000

Prices in the table are Grand Seiko’s recommended U.S. launch prices from 2023, not current prices or estimates of resale value. The brand’s current SBGA493 product page displays USD 6,000 and identifies the watch as a U.S. limited edition of 500 pieces, but does not establish current stock or secondary-market value.

What specifications do the three watches share?

Grand Seiko’s 2023 announcement lists the same core specification set for all three references:

  • Case: Stainless steel, 40.0 mm in diameter, 12.5 mm thick and 46.2 mm long.
  • Bracelet and clasp: Stainless-steel bracelet with a three-fold clasp.
  • Crystal and back: Dual-curve sapphire crystal and exhibition case back.
  • Movement: Spring Drive automatic caliber 9R65, with 30 jewels and a stated power reserve of 72 hours.
  • Stated accuracy: ±1 second per day, or ±15 seconds per month.
  • Water resistance: 10 bar.

The SBGA493’s official product page further specifies a 19 mm band width, 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance and a power-reserve indicator. It describes caliber 9R65 as Spring Drive self-winding with manual winding, with an approximate 72-hour reserve and accuracy of ±15 seconds per month (±1 second per day).

Is the Grand Seiko SBGA493 limited edition?

Yes. Grand Seiko designated the SBGA493 a U.S. limited edition of 500 pieces in its 2023 announcement, and its official product page continues to describe it that way. The limited-edition designation applies to the SBGA493; the launch announcement does not state a limited quantity for the SBGA489 or SBGA491.
