Their reunion is a side-by-side comparison for horological pleasure—not a reported public exhibition.
Why were the two watches brought together?
In an October 6, 2025 feature, Monochrome’s Denis Peshkov presented the Hand Made 1 and Hand Made 2 together because their rarity and price make direct comparison worthwhile. The feature does not identify a public event, auction viewing or owner as the setting. Its point is to look closely at two related but distinct expressions of Greubel Forsey’s handmaking ambitions.

Monochrome traces that ambition to the Time Æon Foundation, formed in 2005 by Robert Greubel, Stephen Forsey and Philippe Dufour to help preserve traditional watchmaking skills threatened by industrialization. The account describes Naissance d’une Montre 1, begun in 2009 with watchmaking teacher Michel Boulanger, as an early demonstration that traditional hand methods could produce a technically capable modern watch. The first project watch was presented in 2012 and, according to Monochrome, sold at Christie’s in 2016 for nearly USD 1.5 million. Monochrome frames the Hand Made watches as a continuation of that effort.

How do their designs and complications differ?
Hand Made 1: the tourbillon in the foreground
At 43.5 mm across, Hand Made 1 is the larger of the pair. Its tourbillon provides the most overt mechanical animation, and its partially open enamel dial lets the regulating organ become part of the watch’s visual presentation. Greubel Forsey’s model page lists a 60-hour power reserve and says production is one piece per year.
Hand Made 2: a quieter, more architectural display
Hand Made 2 is 40.9 mm across and does not have a tourbillon. Instead, it displays hours, minutes, small seconds and power reserve. Greubel Forsey highlights frosted German silver bridges, enamel sub-dials and a large conical jewel associated with the power-reserve mechanism. The result shifts attention from a visible tourbillon to the construction and finishing around a more restrained display. Its power reserve is 72 hours.

Greubel Forsey states that 96% of Hand Made 2’s components are entirely handmade; it does not claim that every component is handmade. The brand also says the 270 components require more than 5,000 hours of work. That distinction matters: the figures describe a high degree of hand production, not a literal absence of every machine-made or otherwise non-handmade part. The manufacturer presents the Hand Made collection as built by hand with classical tools, with production measured in thousands of human-work hours.
Which watch is the more compelling one to compare?
- For scale: Hand Made 1 is 2.6 mm wider and 0.7 mm taller than Hand Made 2, using the manufacturer’s stated case dimensions.
- For mechanical spectacle: Hand Made 1 has the tourbillon; Hand Made 2 does not.
- For power-reserve indication: Hand Made 2 adds a dedicated display and has 12 hours more stated reserve.
- For craft figures: Hand Made 2 has the more specific published component and labor claims: 270 components, more than 5,000 hours and 96% handmade.
- For stated annual output: Greubel Forsey lists one Hand Made 1 per year and two to three Hand Made 2 watches per year.
Both use white-gold cases, share a 21,600-vph frequency and are rated to 30 m / 3 atm water resistance. Those common specifications make the contrasts—rather than a wholly different technical premise—the reason to view them side by side.
