Grieb & Benzinger’s Shades of Grey is a 2013 collection of bespoke watches in palladium-white gold, centred on two designs: the floral, fully skeletonized Grey Tulip and the layered-dial Grey Polaris. Contemporary coverage names several jeweled variants, but differs on how many models were included. Prices reported at launch are historical figures, not current offers or valuations.
What is Grieb & Benzinger Shades of Grey?
Shades of Grey refers to a watch collection reported in 2013. The contemporary articles describe the watches as made at clients’ request, rather than as a standard collection with a confirmed production run. The name is about the watches’ grey finishes; it is not a reference to E. L. James’s novels.
The reports identify two design families, Grey Tulip and Grey Polaris. They do not agree on the total number of named variants: Monochrome’s June 29, 2013 report lists four, while PresentWatch’s July 1, 2013 article adds the Grey Polaris Baguette. The safest description is therefore to name the models reported, rather than assert a definitive collection count.
How do the Grey Tulip and Grey Polaris differ?
| Feature | Grey Tulip family | Grey Polaris family |
|---|---|---|
| Dial and movement appearance | Fully skeletonized, with hand engraving, guilloché decoration and a floral motif, as described by PresentWatch. Horologium reports manual winding and small seconds at 6 o’clock. | Partly skeletonized, with a layered dial. PresentWatch describes a hand-guilloché sterling-silver base dial with black rhodium and a lighter rhodium-coated applied skeletonized dial. WatchTime identifies the visible movement as Unitas caliber 6498. |
| Case and strap | Reported as a 43 mm 18-karat palladium-white-gold case with a grey alligator strap. | Reported as a 43 mm palladium-white-gold case with a grey alligator strap. |
| Visual effect | The openworked movement and floral decoration are the defining look. | Contrasting rhodium finishes make the grey appearance shift with the light, according to Horologium. |
These are descriptive differences in the published specifications, not evidence of a ranking in comfort, timekeeping or everyday legibility. No wear testing is reported in the cited coverage.

Which Shades of Grey models were reported?
Grey Tulip
PresentWatch reported that the Grey Tulip was commissioned by an Eastern European client seeking a less ostentatious alternative to the Black Tulip. The article describes its 43 mm case as 18-karat palladium-white gold and its movement as fully skeletonized, hand-engraved and guilloché-decorated with a floral design. Horologium adds that it is manually wound and has small seconds at 6 o’clock.
Grey Tulip Imperial
PresentWatch describes the Imperial with princess-cut diamonds on the bezel. The report does not provide an independent grading report or gem certification, so the cut and placement should be treated as the article’s product description.

- Seiko 5
- 3 hands (hour minute and second)
- Day and date with silver
- Water-resistant to 30 M (99 feet)
Grey Tulip Diamond
PresentWatch reports 77 brilliant-cut diamonds set on the bezel and lugs. That count is a published product specification, not an independently verified gem report.
Grey Polaris
Unlike the fully openworked Tulip, the Polaris combines a partly skeletonized dial with contrasting grey-toned layers. PresentWatch describes a hand-guilloché sterling-silver base with black rhodium beneath a lighter rhodium-coated applied skeletonized dial. Horologium says the contrast changes in appearance with the light. WatchTime’s October 7, 2013 coverage identifies the visible movement as Unitas caliber 6498.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is known—and not established—about availability?
The reports describe bespoke origins and client commissions, but do not establish total production, current availability, servicing arrangements or present-day market value. Anyone considering a specific watch would need current confirmation from a seller or the manufacturer, including its identity, condition, documentation and any service history. The 2013 descriptions are useful for understanding the designs, not for verifying a present-day listing.
