The Hamilton Fontainebleau is a documented watch series from the early 1970s, represented by an Odyssee model with a distinctive asymmetric bezel and an automatic movement. Its period overlaps with Hamilton’s best-known Space Age watch, the Pulsar, but available documentation does not establish that the Fontainebleau was designed as a Pulsar derivative or directly linked to it. It is best understood as a bold analog watch from the same design era, not as a digital or documented Space Age instrument.

What is the Hamilton Fontainebleau?

“Fontainebleau” appears as a Hamilton series designation in a specialist listing for an Odyssee 2001. The listing describes a circa 1971–1973 example, reference 64061-3, with a stainless-steel case, circular bezel that widens toward the top, rectangular luminous markers and a date window at six o’clock. The example measures approximately 37.5 mm and is fitted with a Swiss Hamilton grade 694A automatic movement with 17 jewels. The seller says that particular watch had been serviced.

Those specifications describe one listed watch, not every Fontainebleau. The listing is useful evidence that the series existed and offers a concrete picture of one design, but it does not establish a complete model range or universal case and movement specifications. See the Vintage Hamilton Odyssee 2001 listing.

Why does it fit the Space-Age design era?

The Fontainebleau’s documented example belongs to the early-1970s setting in which Hamilton was exploring striking, forward-looking watch designs. The clearest official Space Age milestone in Hamilton’s history is the Pulsar: Swatch Group dates its public unveiling to May 6, 1970. The gold P1 reached the market in 1972, followed by the stainless-steel P2 in 1973.

  • Automatic-self-wind Movement
  • Case Diameter: 39.5mm
  • Water resistant to 50m (165ft: in general, suitable for short periods of recreational swimming, but not diving or snorkeling

Swatch Group calls the Pulsar “one of the emblematic creations of the space-age era” and describes it as an “ingenious ‘solid state wrist computer’.” Those descriptions apply to Pulsar, not to the Fontainebleau. The overlapping dates and Hamilton brand context make “Space Age” a useful period framing for the Fontainebleau, but they do not prove a shared design brief, designer, or engineering connection. Swatch Group’s March 18, 2020 article on the Hamilton PSR documents the Pulsar chronology and the modern revival.

What makes the documented Odyssee example distinctive?

The asymmetric bezel

The listing’s most visually distinctive detail is a round bezel that is wider at the top. It gives the watch an unconventional outline without changing its basic analog-watch format.

Dial details and movement

On this example, rectangular luminous markers and a six-o’clock date window organize the dial. Its automatic grade 694A movement contrasts with the Pulsar’s digital electronic identity; the listing gives 17 jewels for this watch. Neither the dial layout nor the movement should be assumed to describe every Fontainebleau.

Wrist fit

The listed case is approximately 37.5 mm across. That measurement belongs to the cited example, and case diameter alone cannot establish how a particular vintage watch will wear; condition, strap, and the shape of the case also matter.

How does it compare with the modern Hamilton PSR?

The PSR is Hamilton’s modern revival of Pulsar design, not a Fontainebleau reissue. The two are therefore useful to compare as different expressions of Hamilton’s watch history, rather than as versions of the same model.

Aspect Fontainebleau Odyssee example Hamilton PSR
Design relationship One vintage Odyssee listing identifies the watch as part of the Fontainebleau series; no direct Pulsar design link is established. Swatch Group describes the PSR as a modern revival of Pulsar design.
Display and movement Analog dial; the cited example has a Swiss Hamilton grade 694A automatic movement with 17 jewels, according to its seller. Hybrid LCD/OLED display, according to Swatch Group.
Case information Approximately 37.5 mm for the cited vintage example, according to its listing. 40.8 × 34.7 mm, according to Swatch Group.
Water resistance Not stated for the cited listing. 10 bar, according to Swatch Group.
Condition and availability Vintage condition and service history must be assessed watch by watch; one listing says its example had been serviced. Current production details and availability are not established by the cited 2020 article.

The Fontainebleau may appeal more to someone seeking an original vintage analog design, while the PSR suits someone drawn to Hamilton’s documented digital-watch heritage in a modern revival. For Hamilton’s wider timeline—including the 1957 Ventura, associated with designer Richard Arbib, and the brand’s involvement in the Caliber 11 automatic chronograph—see Hamilton’s official history. That timeline provides brand context, not evidence about who designed the Fontainebleau.

What to check before buying a vintage Fontainebleau

A single specialist listing cannot establish typical prices, availability, production numbers, or the usual condition of Fontainebleau watches. Approach each candidate as an individual vintage watch and verify its details with the seller.

  • Confirm the identification. Ask for clear photographs of the dial, case, caseback and movement, and compare the claimed model or reference with the watch being offered.
  • Ask about originality. Confirm whether the dial, hands, bezel, crown and movement are believed to be original, and whether any parts have been replaced or refinished.
  • Request service information. A seller’s claim that a watch was serviced applies only to that watch. Ask when it was serviced, what work was done, and whether documentation is available.
  • Check function and condition. Ask whether it runs, keeps time, winds and sets as expected, and whether the date changes correctly. Running does not by itself establish recent servicing or mechanical health.
  • Evaluate the fit in person if possible. The cited example’s approximate 37.5 mm measurement is not a guarantee of wrist comfort; case shape and strap condition affect wear.

No production-volume or collector-demand statistic specific to the Fontainebleau is established in the cited sources, so claims about rarity or value trends should be treated cautiously.
