The Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono H71706830 is a 44 mm automatic chronograph with a black dial, Hamilton’s H-21 movement, a 60-hour power reserve and 10 bar (100 m) water resistance. Its generous dimensions give it a bolder, more pilot-watch-like presence than a compact field watch. Hamilton lists the reference as “Past collection,” so any current purchase depends on a specific retailer or pre-owned listing.

What is the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono H71706830?

H71706830 is the black-dial, stainless-steel version of the Khaki Field Auto Chrono covered here. Hamilton lists an automatic H-21 caliber, sapphire crystal, an anti-reflective treatment and raised numerals coated with Super-LumiNova. The case is sandblasted, giving the watch a less glossy finish than polished steel.

The watch combines a field-inspired name and military styling with a chronograph layout. Fratello’s hands-on reviewer wrote that “The Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic Chronograph is a field watch on paper, but to me, the size, dial layout, hands, strap, and chronograph function make this a pilot’s watch.” That is one reviewer’s interpretation, not a universal description of how the watch looks or wears.

Is the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Chrono too big?

At 44 mm in diameter and 14.15 mm thick, it is a substantial watch. Those figures describe the case, but they do not by themselves determine fit: lug-to-lug length and an individual wrist’s shape also matter. The available hands-on account characterizes the watch as large, but does not provide a controlled wrist-size comparison or establish how it will fit a particular wearer.

If you want a compact field watch or an easy fit under a close-fitting cuff, the H71706830’s dimensions are a reason to try it on before buying. If you prefer a more assertive presence and like a chronograph dial, the same scale may be part of its appeal. Do not infer fit from diameter alone; check the watch on your wrist or compare its full dimensions, including lug-to-lug, with a watch you already wear.

What do the movement and water-resistance figures mean?

Hamilton specifies a 60-hour power reserve for the automatic H-21 caliber. In practical terms, a fully wound watch can continue running for up to that stated period off the wrist, though actual running time depends on the watch’s condition and use. The figure is a manufacturer specification, not a measured result from the cited review.

The listed water resistance is 10 bar (100 m). This is the manufacturer’s rating; it should not be read as a recommendation to operate the chronograph underwater or as a substitute for checking the watch’s seals and condition, particularly on a pre-owned example.

Straps and sizing

Hamilton lists a 22 mm lug width, which gives buyers a clear starting point when looking for another strap. Before ordering, confirm that the strap’s attachment and dimensions suit this exact watch; matching width alone does not guarantee compatibility. A replacement strap can change the watch’s appearance, but it will not make the 44 mm case smaller.

Is the H71706830 discontinued, and can you still buy one?

Hamilton’s official product page labels the H71706830 “Past collection.” That means the reference is no longer presented as part of the current collection on that page; it does not prove that every retailer has stopped selling new-old-stock examples or that pre-owned watches are unavailable. Hamilton’s page is not a live inventory feed, so check the exact listing and seller before making a purchase.
