The 2018 Hamilton Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono Limited Edition, reference H77960, pairs a 1,918-piece run with an unusually elaborate pilot’s chronograph layout and a mechanical drift-angle calculator. Fratello’s reviewer found its detailed dial readable and the large case comfortable on a 7.5-inch wrist, while advising prospective wearers to try it on. The calculator is a practical way to understand crosswind corrections, but the watch’s size and busy design are central to whether it will suit you.

What is the Hamilton X-Wind H77960 Limited Edition?

H77960 is the reference reviewed by Fratello in 2018 as the Hamilton Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono Limited Edition. Fratello reports that Hamilton made 1,918 pieces; the review’s example was numbered 1814/1918. That identity matters because other watches also carry the X-Wind name, but they are not necessarily the same edition or configuration.

The watch’s defining feature is an angle-of-drift calculator built into the rotating inner scales. It is paired with an automatic chronograph and a substantial aviation-inspired dial. In other words, this is not a restrained, time-only pilot’s watch: it is a large instrument-style chronograph whose controls and scales are part of its appeal.

How large is it, and what did it feel like to wear?

Fratello reports H77960 dimensions of 45 mm in diameter, 14 mm thick and 53 mm from lug tip to lug tip. Those measurements give a better sense of the wrist presence than diameter alone: the case is broad, and its length deserves attention if you have a smaller wrist or prefer compact watches.

The Fratello reviewer, whose wrist measured 7.5 inches, said the watch sat comfortably but still recommended trying it on because of its size. That is one person’s fit experience, not a guarantee that the case will wear comfortably for everyone.

What does the drift-angle calculator do?

Hamilton’s official manual describes the feature this way: “The Khaki X-Wind models are equipped with a calculator of angle of drift, which allows pilots to determine the bearing corrections to apply in case of crosswind.” In practical terms, the rotating scales help work out how a crosswind affects an aircraft’s track and what bearing adjustment would compensate.

How to follow Hamilton’s example

  1. Set the upper inner bezel to the wind direction and the lower inner bezel to zero. Establish the wind’s speed and direction.
  2. Set the wind direction on the watch and use the aircraft’s speed on the exterior bezel.
  3. Account for local magnetic variation to convert the geographic bearing to a magnetic bearing, then determine the angle between the wind direction and that magnetic bearing.
  4. Use the engraved graph to find the crosswind component, then read the drift angle from the rotating scales.
  5. Apply the drift angle to the bearing. In Hamilton’s example, a 40 mph headwind component and a 30-degree crosswind angle produce an approximate 6.5-degree drift angle. With wind from the right and a 40-degree magnetic bearing, the example adds the drift angle to yield a corrected bearing of 46.5 degrees.

The figures above are Hamilton manual examples, not a claim that the watch replaces current flight-planning or navigation instruments. The manual also instructs users to screw the crowns back in after adjusting the scales to help ensure water resistance.

How are the dial and controls laid out?

Fratello describes a black glossy dial with three chronograph registers at 12, 3 and 6, plus a day-date display at 9. Large sand-yellow luminous numerals and hands stand out against the dial. The reviewer found the display readable despite its many markings; that is an attributed visual impression, not a laboratory legibility test.

The review describes a brushed case with polished details, a main crown and chronograph pushers on the left, and two screw-down crowns on the right for the inner scales. The lower chronograph pusher starts and stops the chronograph; the upper pusher resets it. Fratello attributes the left-side arrangement to the movement’s rotated layout, which leaves room on the right for the calculator controls when the watch is worn on the left wrist.

What movement does H77960 use?

Fratello reports an automatic Hamilton H-21 chronograph related to the ETA/Valjoux 7750, with a silicon hairspring, COSC chronometer certification and a 60-hour power reserve. These are specifications reported for H77960 in the 2018 review.

Do not use specifications from another X-Wind reference as if they automatically applied to this limited edition. Hamilton’s official page for the separate H77696793, for example, lists a 60-hour reserve but describes a different 44 mm model. Its other listed specifications—including 15.55 mm thickness, 22 mm lug width, sapphire crystal and 10 bar water resistance—are for H77696793, not established here for H77960.

What did the reviewer think of the strap?

Fratello reports a 22 mm strap on H77960. Its reviewer considered the strap well constructed and paired with a suitable buckle, but felt its pattern was too plain for the watch. That is the reviewer’s personal styling judgment, rather than a universal assessment of the strap.

If considering a replacement, treat 22 mm as a starting point for checking compatibility, not confirmation that any strap of that width will fit. Lug shape, end profile and fastening details still need to be verified against the specific watch.

How does H77960 differ from other Hamilton X-Wind editions?

Model or edition What the cited source establishes Important distinction
2018 H77960 limited edition Fratello reports 1,918 pieces, a 45 × 14 mm case, 53 mm lug tip to lug tip, H-21 movement with a 60-hour reserve, and 22 mm strap. This is the watch covered in this review.
H77696793 Hamilton lists a 44 mm case, H-21 movement with 60-hour reserve, 15.55 mm thickness, 22 mm lug width, sapphire crystal and 10 bar water resistance. A separate reference; Hamilton marks its page “Past collection” and “Not available online.” Those labels do not establish H77960’s availability or specifications.
2014 X-Wind Limited Edition Hodinkee reports two dial configurations, 1,999 pieces per configuration and a $2,395 launch price. An earlier, separate edition. Its launch price is historical and is not a current value for H77960.

Is the H77960 available, and what should you check before buying?

No current H77960 price or stock status is established here. Hamilton’s “Past collection” and “Not available online” labels apply to the different H77696793 reference, so they cannot answer whether H77960 is currently for sale. Verify live listings, condition and asking price before making a decision.

  • Confirm the reference is H77960; an X-Wind listing or a similar-looking watch is not enough to establish that it is the 2018 limited edition.
  • Check the specific watch’s condition, included components and any service information, and compare like-for-like H77960 listings rather than mixing in other editions.
  • Assess the 45 mm diameter and 53 mm lug-to-lug against your wrist and fit preferences; the reviewer’s comfort report is individual.
  • If comparing alternatives, keep reference and release period straight, then compare dimensions, dial readability, movement, chronometer status, calculator function, control layout, strap or bracelet, edition count, condition and verified asking price.
