Strehler says its phase indication deviates by one day in two million years, but the maker also says another watch brand surpassed that record in 2024. The title phrase “most precise moon-phase wristwatch ever” is therefore historical, not a current record claim.
The name can be confusing: Lune Exacte is the model discussed here, while Strehler describes it as the next step after the Sauterelle à lune perpétuelle. “Papillon” appears in the title of the earlier hands-on coverage, but the maker’s current product page calls this watch Lune Exacte.
What makes the Lune Exacte different?
It separates two things that are often conflated: the long-term accuracy of the moon-phase mechanism and the precision with which a wearer can read or set the moon’s age. Its conventional moon-phase display shows the lunar cycle, while a second scale at six o’clock indicates how many days have passed since the new moon.
According to Strehler’s 2016 release, a red pointer indicates age in days and a rotating vernier ring refines the reading in three-hour increments. The maker says this age display can be read and set to three-hour precision at any point in the cycle, rather than only around new or full moon. Fondation Haute Horlogerie also describes the three-hour age indication and the watch’s remontoir d’égalité.

Those three-hour increments are not a claim that the phase indication is accurate to three hours over years of running. They describe the scale’s reading and setting refinement. The separate one-day-in-two-million-years figure is Strehler’s stated long-term deviation for the phase indication.
How accurate is it—and is it still the most precise?
Strehler’s current Lune Exacte product page states a deviation of one day in two million years. That is a manufacturer claim; the sources available here do not independently verify the figure or establish it as today’s record.

The same page says the claim held for ten years until 2024, when another watch brand achieved a moon-phase accuracy of more than 45,000,000 years. The page does not identify that brand, and the current record holder or the basis for a direct comparison is not established here. It is more accurate to describe Lune Exacte as a watch with an exceptionally precise maker-stated phase indication than as the most precise moon-phase watch currently available.
For context, Monochrome Watches gives the average synodic month as 29.530587981 days. That is the average interval between successive lunar phases, not a measured result for this particular watch.

What does the watch’s mechanism and movement offer?
The maker lists a manually wound movement with a patented remontoir d’égalité, a mechanism intended to deliver more consistent force to the escapement. The listed movement measures 32 × 30 mm and is 5.9 mm thick. It runs at 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour), contains 25 jewels and comprises 184 parts. Strehler lists a 78-hour power reserve.
The moon-age scale’s vernier ring adds a second layer of interaction to the dial: it lets the wearer refine the displayed age rather than relying on the position of the moon disc alone. The maker’s 2016 explanation of how the display works is available in “Presenting the Lune Exacte”.

The watch’s appeal is clearest for someone who values the mechanics and legibility of a moon display as much as the complication itself. The separate age scale provides a more exact way to track and set the lunar age, while the remontoir and unusually ambitious phase mechanism make the movement’s technical design central to the proposition.

It is also a large, high-priced independent watch: the listed case spans 41 × 47.2 mm, and the maker’s prices begin at CHF 115,800 before VAT and local taxes. Those dimensions and prices are practical considerations, not evidence of current availability.
What the historical “most precise” claim means
The supplied hands-on article title reflects the record language used around the watch’s launch. Strehler’s current product page itself says another brand surpassed the two-million-year figure in 2024. The durable distinction is the Lune Exacte’s combination of a maker-stated long-term phase accuracy and a separate age indicator readable and settable in three-hour increments—not an unqualified claim that it remains the record holder.
