The original 2021 RZE Fortitude is a titanium pilot-style watch built around clear, high-contrast time reading, an aviation-inspired turbine bezel and a distinctive oversized crown. Fratello reviewer Dave Sergeant found its proportions and legibility convincing and its bracelet notably light; he thought the Nimbus Grey dial’s sand-like texture was unusually coarse. Those are impressions from one review sample, not universal fit or performance findings.
What the original Fortitude is—and what it isn’t
This review covers the original 2021 Fortitude, not the later Fortitude GMT. The first model paired a titanium case and bracelet with a Seiko automatic movement, a 100 m water-resistance rating reported at launch, and a simple three-hand display. RZE’s archive identifies four original dial versions: Night Hawk, Cruiser White, Turbo Teal and Nimbus Grey. RZE’s archive is useful for identifying the original range, but it does not establish current stock or price.
Fratello’s Dave Sergeant reviewed the Nimbus Grey version. He described the watch as proportionate on his wrist and praised its clear day-and-night legibility. His experience is a helpful account of that sample, not a guarantee of fit for every wrist.
Design: pilot cues with practical details
Dial, hands and bezel
The dial has a coarse, sand-like surface and a sandwich construction, with broad arrow-shaped hands and large indexes intended to make the time easy to read. RZE founder Travis Tan said the hands and indexes were designed for quick reading and filled with bright Super-LumiNova; he identified the lume as Grade A BGW9. These are the brand’s design descriptions, not independent measurements of brightness or duration.

The turbine-style bezel supplies the most distinctive visual cue. Tan said its shape was inspired by aircraft turbines. Sergeant liked the legibility and found the dial texture more coarse than other dials he had encountered, while adding that the texture worked. Turbo Teal was his favorite of the color options; that is his preference, not a ranking of the range.
The oversized crown
The large screw-down crown is designed to be easier to operate, including when wearing gloves. A red line on the crown provides a visual indication of whether it is fully screwed down, according to Tan. It is a useful status cue, but not a substitute for correctly securing the crown before exposing the watch to water.

How it wears: two reported measurements
Published dimensions differ slightly, so the figures should not be combined into a single set. Fratello measured its review sample; RZE’s current dimensions page lists its own specifications:

Fratello’s hands-on review reports that Sergeant found the 41 mm case and 48 mm lug-to-lug proportionate on his wrist and the titanium bracelet notably light. RZE lists 110–120 g with bracelet on its dimensions page. The page does not specify how that weight range varies, so it should not be treated as a precise weight for every configuration.

RZE specifies a 20 mm lug width, which makes a 20 mm watch strap a plausible replacement-size search. Lug width alone does not confirm that a particular third-party strap will fit: check the attachment arrangement and spring-bar dimensions before buying.

The movement naming difference reflects how the sources identify the original watch; it is not evidence that the reviewed watch had a different movement. The NH35/NH35A is the movement reported for this original Fortitude, not the Miyota 90S5 found in specifications for a different RZE model.

What the hands-on review establishes—and what it doesn’t
Sergeant received the review sample from RZE owner Travis Tan and published his review on December 31, 2021. He enjoyed wearing it, praised the proportions and readable display, and singled out the titanium bracelet’s lightness. His most specific reservation was the coarse feel of the dial texture. These are a reviewer’s observations from one watch, not controlled testing or a prediction of how the watch will fit another wearer.
- Reasonable takeaways: the design prioritizes visibility; titanium keeps the bracelet light by the reviewer’s account; and the textured dial gives the watch a distinctive surface.
- Not established by these sources: measured accuracy, magnetic resistance, scratch resistance, lume duration, independently verified water resistance, or long-term comfort and durability.
Original price and present-day availability
The Calibrated Wrist reported a $599 USD retail price and early-bird pricing of $469–$499 in November 2021. Those are historical launch-era figures, not current offers. The original model’s current inventory and price have not been established; RZE’s archive is a model reference, not proof that the watch is available to buy.

Verdict
The 2021 Fortitude’s appeal is its purposeful combination of legible pilot-watch styling, titanium construction and a few memorable details—the turbine bezel, oversized crown and red crown indicator. The hands-on review supports a positive impression of its proportions, visibility and lightweight bracelet, while the coarse dial texture may be a matter of taste. With no independent performance or long-term testing established here, the strongest case for the original Fortitude is its design and the reviewer’s direct experience, rather than an unverified claim about accuracy or ruggedness.
