The “new” Seiko Sumo Prospex Diver in this hands-on report is the 2019 update: black-dial SPB101J1 and green-dial SPB103J1. The changes highlighted at Baselworld were a 6R35 automatic movement with a stated 70-hour power reserve, a sapphire crystal, and revised bezel numerals, indices and hands. Both references share the same listed case dimensions and core specifications; dial color is the principal distinction in the cited product sheets.
What “new” means in this Sumo report
Michael Stockton’s Fratello hands-on article was published on March 22, 2019, covering the Prospex Sumo update shown at Baselworld that year. It is a contemporary account of that release, not a report of a new 2026 launch. Read the 2019 Baselworld hands-on report at Fratello.
The Sumo design first appeared in 2007, and Seiko’s 2022 Prospex brochure says fans gave it the “Sumo” name not long after its debut. The name is a fan nickname, rather than the formal name of a separate Seiko collection. Seiko Prospex Sumo brochure (2022).
What changed on the 2019 SPB101J1 and SPB103J1?
The update’s major mechanical change was the use of Seiko’s 6R35 automatic movement, with a stated 70-hour power reserve. The report also notes the addition of a sapphire crystal and visual revisions to the bezel numerals, indices and hands. Those are the changes associated with the 2019 SPB101J1 and SPB103J1 story; they should not be confused with upgrades on later Sumo references.

The Seiko Boutique UK specification sheets list the same dimensions, movement reserve, crystal, bezel and water-resistance rating for both references. Case size, water resistance and other listed specifications
Seiko Boutique UK lists both watches with a 45.0 mm diameter, 52.6 mm case length, 12.9 mm thickness and 20.0 mm lug width. The same sheets specify a 6R35 automatic movement with 70 hours of power reserve, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, unidirectional rotating bezel and 20 bar water resistance.

The 45.0 mm diameter and 52.6 mm length are the most useful figures to consider when judging likely wrist presence. Compare them with a watch you already wear comfortably and with how much case length your wrist can accommodate; the dimensions alone do not establish how the watch will fit an individual wearer.
Twenty bar is the manufacturer-listed water-resistance rating, not a guarantee that any particular used or unserviced watch is safe to submerge. Condition and servicing matter when assessing an individual watch.

How the 2019 models relate to later Sumos
Seiko’s 2022 Prospex brochure describes later Sumo references SPB321J1, SPB323J1 and SPB325J1, including ceramic bezels and super-hard coating. These are later-generation details, not features to attribute to the 2019 SPB101J1 and SPB103J1 launch story. Check the reference number and generation when comparing specifications or shopping; a shared Sumo nickname does not mean every Sumo has the same construction or equipment.
