The Bell & Ross BR-03 GMT Compass is a 42 mm steel instrument-style watch that combines an independently adjustable GMT hand with a solar-compass scale. The compass is an ingenious analog orientation aid, not a magnetic compass: it works by setting the GMT hand to local solar time and aligning it with the Sun. That setup temporarily gives up the hand’s second-time-zone display.
What the BR-03 GMT Compass adds to the BR-03 GMT
The BR-03 GMT Compass builds on the architecture of Bell & Ross’s 2021 BR-03 GMT, adding a fixed compass scale to the familiar square instrument-watch layout. Fratello’s Dave Sergeant saw and briefly wore the watch at a Bell & Ross boutique in London; he did not test it outdoors or validate the compass’s accuracy. His November 15, 2025 account describes a short in-person impression, not a field review.
The reference is BR0393-COM-ST/SRB. Bell & Ross limits it to 500 pieces and gives it a 42 mm-wide, 12.3 mm-thick satin-finished and polished steel case. A black dial carries cardinal points and a minute track on the flange, while the red-and-white twin-arrow GMT hand stands apart from the luminous black-and-white hour and minute hands. The blue-and-black, two-colour anodized aluminium bezel has a bidirectional 24-hour scale.
How does the compass function work?
This is a solar compass: it uses the Sun’s apparent position and the time of day, rather than sensing Earth’s magnetic field. Bell & Ross’s key instruction is: “Set the GMT hand to the local solar time (not the official time).” Once set, the GMT hand can act as a rough directional pointer against the watch’s fixed 0°–360° scale and N/E/S/W markings.
#1 Best Overall
- Movement: calibre BR-CAL.303. Automatic mechanical.
- Water-resistance: 100 metres.
- Bi-directional rotating bezel with 24-hour scale and black and red two-colour anodised aluminium ring.
- Straps: black coloured calfskin leather and ultra-resilient black synthetic fabric.
- Functions: hours, minutes, central seconds, second 24-hour time zone and date. Quick setting of the GMT hand, independently of the hour hand.
- Set the GMT hand to local solar time. Use solar time for your location, not the official time shown by a clock; local time zones and daylight-saving time can make the two differ.
- Hold the watch flat and parallel to the ground.
- Point the GMT hand toward the Sun.
- Read orientation from the dial. Use the 0°–360° flange scale and cardinal points as the watch’s indicated directional reference.
Bell & Ross publishes the operating method but does not establish a measured accuracy figure in its product information. Treat the display as an orientation aid, not a substitute for a magnetic compass, map, GPS receiver, or other navigation equipment—especially when safety depends on knowing your position or bearing.
How does the GMT display work?
In its usual role, the independently quick-set GMT hand indicates a second 24-hour time zone. The bi-directional bezel can be rotated to use the GMT display to read a third zone. Fratello describes the hand as moving in one-hour increments; this is a caller-style GMT arrangement, not a traveler-style mechanism that jumps the local hour hand. Bell & Ross lists hours, minutes, central seconds, date and an independently quick-set second 24-hour zone.

The GMT hand cannot perform both roles at once: set it to local solar time for compass use, and it no longer indicates the second time zone you had assigned to it. The watch still tells the local time with its main hands, but the hand’s dual purpose means the compass is a mode you choose rather than an always-on extra reading.

Sergeant’s boutique visit supports a limited impression of the watch’s appearance and on-wrist feel, but not conclusions about comfort over extended wear. The square 42 mm case is a defining part of the BR-03 instrument-watch look; anyone considering it should judge the case shape and width on their own wrist if possible.

Price and availability
On October 7, 2026, Bell & Ross’s US product page listed the watch at US$5,200 and showed it as unavailable. That is a dated US-market listing, not confirmation of current stock or a universal price. Fratello’s November 15, 2025 article gave a different snapshot: US$5,000, €4,900 and £4,200. The sources do not explain the difference, and those figures should be read as separate date- and market-specific prices.

The BR-03 GMT Compass is most compelling for someone who already likes Bell & Ross’s square instrument-watch design and wants an independently adjustable GMT hand, a bezel that can support a third-zone reading, and a distinctive solar-compass complication. The compass gives the watch a useful story and a hands-on setting ritual, but it brings a trade-off: using the hand for orientation means not using it for the second time zone. The model’s appeal therefore rests at least as much on its design and dual-purpose display as on practical navigation utility.
