The Chopard L.U.C 1860 in Lucent Steel, reference 168860-3003, pairs a compact 36.5 mm case with a hand-crafted guilloché salmon-colored gold dial and a slim, COSC-certified automatic movement. It is a modern return to the proportions and design of the original L.U.C 1860, first introduced in 1997—not a 36 mm watch by Chopard’s precise measurement.
What the Chopard L.U.C 1860 in steel is
Reference 168860-3003 is the salmon-dial version of Chopard’s L.U.C 1860, made in Lucent Steel. Chopard describes it as “Faithful to the original proportions and design,” while the 2023 steel model brings that design back with a salmon-and-steel palette. The original L.U.C 1860 appeared in 1997. Chopard’s product page lists a 36.50 mm diameter, 8.20 mm thickness, and 30 m water resistance. Fratello’s December 22, 2023 hands-on gives the lug-to-lug measurement as 44.5 mm.

How the case and dial come together
Compact, slim proportions
At 36.5 mm across and 8.2 mm thick, the case has the restrained dimensions associated with a dress watch. The 44.5 mm lug-to-lug figure reported by Fratello helps put that diameter in context: lug reach matters to how a watch sits, not just the width of its bezel. Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer writes that he wore it for several days on an 18 cm wrist and found the proportions wearable; that is his wrist impression, not a universal fit guarantee.
Salmon-colored gold with guilloché
The dial is gold treated to produce its salmon color, with a hand-crafted guilloché finish. Chopard’s product description identifies the dial as gold and the decoration as hand-crafted guilloché; Fratello describes the decoration as hand-engraved. The textured surface gives the dial more visual depth than a flat color alone, while the steel case keeps the overall combination from reading as overtly formal. Hodinkee’s April 4, 2023 coverage also frames the model as a salmon-and-steel update to the 1997 design.

The L.U.C 96.40-L movement
Inside is Chopard’s automatic L.U.C 96.40-L, based on the company’s first Manufacture caliber, developed in 1996. Chopard says the movement is developed, produced, and assembled in its workshops. Its 3.3 mm thickness helps keep the watch’s overall profile slim.
- Winding: a bidirectional gold micro-rotor.
- Barrels: two barrels.
- Power reserve: 65 hours, as stated by Chopard.
- Certification and hallmark: COSC chronometer certification and the Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark, according to Chopard.
These are manufacturer specifications and claims, rather than independent test results. The micro-rotor is a practical design choice as well as a visible point of distinction: it winds the watch without a full-size rotor covering as much of the movement.

Chopard publishes a 30 m water-resistance rating. That figure should not be treated as a promise of suitability for swimming or diving; the product information cited here does not specify either activity. This is a dress-oriented watch whose appeal rests chiefly on its proportions, dial work, and movement.
Price and availability
Chopard’s US product page displayed a price of $29,700 when accessed on October 8, 2026. This is a time-sensitive listed price, not a broader market estimate. Check the current official listing or contact a Chopard boutique for up-to-date pricing and availability.

The reference is the clearest way to identify the watch: 168860-3003 denotes the Lucent Steel model with the salmon-colored gold dial discussed here. It should not be confused with the later Areuse Blue reference 168860-3005, which has a different dial. The case and movement specifications above describe the salmon version, not every watch bearing the L.U.C 1860 name.
