Hands-On: The Vulcain Nautical Heritage, a Mechanical Alarm Diver

The Vulcain Nautical Heritage combines a hand-wound mechanical alarm, rotating decompression scale and reported 300 m water resistance. Here are its specs, configurations and pricing context.

The Vulcain Nautical Heritage pairs a hand-wound alarm with a rotating decompression scale and a reported 300 m water-resistance rating. It is a specialist design rather than a conventional dive watch: the 2023-reviewed model uses a separate alarm barrel, and its upper dial plate turns to reveal staged decompression stops. Vulcain’s current collection listing starts at CHF 4,200, though the price depends on the configuration.

What are the specs of the Vulcain Nautical?

The following specifications describe the standard Nautical Heritage reviewed by Fratello in September 2023. Its quoted prices are historical, not current configuration-specific offers.

Specification Reported detail
Case Stainless steel; 42.2 mm diameter (Fratello, 2023)
Thickness 16.6 mm with sapphire display back; 17.35 mm with solid back (Fratello, 2023)
Crystal Acrylic or sapphire (Fratello, 2023)
Water resistance 300 m (30 ATM), as reported by Fratello in 2023, including for the display-back version
Movement V-10, manual wind, 25 jewels, 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz) (Fratello, 2023)
Power reserve 42 hours for timekeeping on the reviewed V-10 (Fratello, 2023)
Alarm Separate barrel; approximately 20 seconds of alarm duration, as reported by Fratello in 2023
Dial mechanism Rotating upper plate reveals the decompression scale (Fratello, 2023)

The thickness difference is tied to the case-back choice, not a change in the watch’s diameter. The review describes the solid back as a “triple case back”; choose between that construction and a sapphire display back alongside the crystal and strap options.

How does the Vulcain Nautical alarm work?

The V-10 uses separate barrels for timekeeping and the alarm. Fratello’s 2023 review describes winding both systems from the crown at 3 o’clock: turn it clockwise to wind the alarm barrel and counterclockwise to wind the timekeeping barrel. A pusher at 2 o’clock arms or sets the alarm hand. These are the review’s operating instructions, not independently verified handling tests.

With the alarm reported to sound for about 20 seconds, this is a mechanical chime with a defined duration, not a continuous electronic alert. The separate barrel means the alarm and timekeeping are distinct functions within the hand-wound movement.

How does the Nautical decompression scale work?

A second crown at 4 o’clock rotates the upper dial plate, exposing a decompression scale. Fratello describes staged stops at 9, 6, and 3 metres, with the applicable stop sequence based on dive depth and duration.

This feature is a historical mechanical aid, not a substitute for current dive planning, training, a dive computer, or other appropriate safety equipment. The available reporting explains the scale’s described function but does not independently validate it for dive-safety use. Do not use the watch as the basis for a real decompression plan.

Which Nautical Heritage configuration should you compare?

Crystal, case back, strap, thickness, and price differ across the configurations described in Fratello’s 2023 review. Its examples are useful for understanding the trade-offs, but they are not verified current quotes.

Fratello’s 2023 specification table gives a broader CHF 4,200–5,200 range. Vulcain’s current website lists the Nautical Heritage collection from CHF 4,200; that is a starting price, not a price for every combination. Check the live listing for the exact crystal, case back, and strap before ordering.

How much does the Vulcain Nautical cost?

The current official collection listing starts at CHF 4,200. The precise current price for a particular configuration is not established by that starting figure. Fratello’s 2023 report gives CHF 4,200–5,200, including CHF 4,200 for an acrylic-crystal, solid-back configuration with a non-exotic strap and CHF 4,900 for its sapphire, display-back, rubber-strap review sample.

Is the Nautical Legacy Massena LAB the same watch?

No. The Nautical Legacy Massena LAB is a separate collaboration, not another name for the standard Nautical Heritage reviewed in 2023. Time+Tide reported on December 12, 2024, that the collaboration was limited to 25 pieces, had a brown dial and 42 mm case measuring 17.5 mm thick, and launched at US$4,950. It reported 300 m water resistance and a manual-wound Cricket Alarm Calibre V10 with a 52-hour reserve. Day & Night Magazine also reported the partnership, limited quantity, and 52-hour reserve on January 29, 2025. Those collaboration-specific details should not be attributed to the standard Heritage model.

Why the Nautical matters in Vulcain’s history

Vulcain dates its first Nautical to 1961, following the brand’s 1947 Cricket alarm wristwatch. The modern Heritage brings those two themes together in a hand-wound alarm diver: an audible mechanical complication alongside a rotating decompression scale. Its appeal is therefore specific—the combination of alarm and dive-oriented display, rather than a claim to replace modern dive equipment.
