For the 44 mm reference AL-525LNSB4VG6, Alpina lists an 89 g weight and an automatic AL-525 movement. The material story is specific, but it is not proof of a quantified environmental benefit; and Alpina’s Canadian product page currently marks this reference discontinued and sold out.
What the Alpina Seastrong Diver Gyre is
The Diver Gyre is an automatic dive watch in Alpina’s Seastrong line. The verified 44 mm model is reference AL-525LNSB4VG6. Its specifications make it a mechanical sports watch with a substantial depth rating, while its case material distinguishes it from a conventional steel diver.

Is the Alpina Gyre a real dive watch?
Alpina lists the 44 mm AL-525LNSB4VG6 at 300 m water resistance, equivalent to 30 bar or 999 ft. That rating places it among watches designed for serious water use, but a rating alone does not establish suitability for every diver, condition or activity. Follow the watch’s manual and have seals and water resistance checked as appropriate, especially on a pre-owned example.

- Case / bezel material: Resin; Rotating bezel
- Day and date display at 3 o’clock
- Analog display, molded resin band with buckle closure; Accuracy: ±20 seconds per month
Hodinkee’s 2020 launch coverage also reported the Gyre’s 300 m rating. Neither the stated depth rating nor the automatic movement should be read as independent testing of this individual example’s present condition.
What does “made from ocean plastic” mean?
Alpina Brand Director Oliver van Lanschot Hubrecht told Worn & Wound in 2020 that the Gyre case is composed of 70% plastic debris collected from fishing nets in the Indian Ocean and 30% fiberglass. He described the fiberglass as reinforcement intended to make the composite suitable for a sports-watch case. This is the manufacturer’s account through its brand director, not a third-party materials audit. Worn & Wound’s interview with Alpina’s brand director.

- LIGHT-POWERED QUARTZ - Converts ordinary light into stored energy through an ML2016 rechargeable cell. A full charge keeps the watch running for up to 6 months in darkness, with no charging cable needed.
- 200M WATER RESISTANCE - Rated to 200 meters/660 feet for swimming, snorkeling and water sports. Always screw the crown fully closed before water exposure; never adjust it underwater. Not for showering, bathing or sauna use.
- SCREW-DOWN CROWN - The threaded crown and double-seal structure help support water resistance and prevent accidental time changes. Unscrew and pull to set the time, then press and turn clockwise until secure.
- BOLD, EASY-READ DIAL - Oversized hands, raised hour markers and strong contrast make the time easy to read at a glance. The textured grid dial and minute-marked bezel create a rugged, ocean-inspired look.
- ACTIVE-WEAR COMFORT - The flexible textured strap stays comfortable and secure through daily use and water activities. After saltwater exposure, rinse the watch with fresh water and dry it thoroughly.
The case is molded in a purpose-made mold rather than machined like a steel case, according to the same interview. The claim applies to the case material; it should not be conflated with the strap or packaging. Hodinkee described the paired NATO strap as made from recycled bottles, while Alpina describes the band on this reference as recycled plastic. Alpina says the collection’s gift box uses recycled plastic, recycled paper and rPET fabric.
Those material descriptions do not establish a quantified lifecycle benefit, the total amount of ocean debris removed because of Gyre sales, or that the entire watch is recyclable. No independently audited cleanup figure or lifecycle assessment is established in the cited sources.

How does the 44 mm Gyre wear?
The official listing gives the watch a weight of 89 g. That helps put the size in perspective: 44 mm is a broad case dimension, but the listed mass is modest for a watch of that diameter. Weight alone cannot predict comfort, since wrist shape, strap adjustment and case proportions also matter.
In a July 1, 2020 review, Allen Farmelo of Beyond the Dial described the watch as light, praised the dial’s execution and said the 44 mm composite case felt nimble rather than clunky. He disclosed that he had requested a sample and was positively predisposed to the project, so those comments are his subjective hands-on impressions, not independent comparative or durability testing. What movement is inside?
Alpina identifies the movement as its automatic AL-525. Hodinkee reported at launch in 2020 that the AL-525 is based on Sellita’s SW-200, with 26 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 38-hour power reserve. Those are launch-report specifications, not results from new testing of the watch.
