The MAEN Brooklyn 36 can look like a panda chronograph at first glance, but its two recessed registers show calendar information—not elapsed time. It is an automatic triple-calendar watch, with displays for the day, date and month. The champagne-dial watch in Fratello’s May 24, 2023 hands-on was an early prototype; MAEN’s current production pages show other dial colors and configurations.
Why the Brooklyn 36 looks like a panda chronograph
“Panda” usually describes a light dial with contrasting dark subdials. On the champagne-dial prototype covered by Fratello, the contrast between the main dial and its two calendar registers suggested that familiar chronograph layout. But those registers are not stopwatch counters, and the watch does not time or display elapsed minutes and hours.

The visual effect comes from the dial’s construction as well as its color. MAEN describes a sunburst pie-pan dial, a recessed, sandblasted chapter ring and lowered, sandblasted subdials. Dauphine hands and thin polished applied markers reinforce the vintage-inspired look. These details are described by the maker for the collection; the champagne panda treatment belongs to the prototype Fratello handled, not every production variant.
What the registers display—and how the calendar works
The Miyota 9122 automatic movement drives the Brooklyn 36’s time display and triple calendar: day of the week, date and month, alongside hours, minutes and sweep seconds. The month and day indications make the registers look busy, but they serve calendar functions rather than chronograph timing.

This is a conventional calendar, not a perpetual calendar. The date mechanism assumes a 31-day month, so the wearer must correct the date after months with fewer than 31 days. MAEN describes a pusher at 2 o’clock for month adjustment and the crown for setting the date, weekday and time. Check the instructions for the exact production version before adjusting it; the available descriptions do not establish a universal step-by-step setting sequence for every configuration.
Case and movement specifications
MAEN’s current collection specification gives the Brooklyn 36 a 316L stainless-steel case, 36 mm in diameter and 46 mm from lug to lug. The case is listed as 11.1 mm thick, or 12.6 mm including the box-domed sapphire crystal. That distinction matters when comparing its on-wrist height with watches whose quoted thickness excludes the crystal.
| Specification | MAEN’s current collection listing |
|---|---|
| Case diameter | 36 mm |
| Lug-to-lug | 46 mm |
| Thickness | 11.1 mm; 12.6 mm including the box crystal |
| Case and crystal | 316L stainless steel; box-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating |
| Water resistance | 5 ATM, as stated by MAEN |
| Movement | Miyota 9122 automatic; 28,800 beats per hour; 26 jewels |
| Power reserve | Approximately 40 hours, as stated by MAEN |
| Functions | Day, date, month, hours, minutes and sweep seconds |
These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. A stated 5 ATM rating is not a promise that every kind of water use is appropriate; follow MAEN’s guidance for the particular watch and its condition. The available material does not establish an independent accuracy test for the Miyota 9122 in this model.
The prototype and current production versions are not interchangeable
Thor Svaboe’s Fratello hands-on, published May 24, 2023, covered an early champagne-dial prototype, reference ATC.02. He praised its proportions and layered dial and described its character as sports-dressy. Those are his impressions of a prototype, not laboratory findings or an assessment of every current production watch.

MAEN’s current collection pages list M5.1.x production variants in dark grey, cream white, salmon, green and black. The current M5.1.6 listing, for example, specifies a salmon dial with cream-white subdials—not the champagne prototype shown and discussed in the review. Colorways and product configurations can change, so check the exact reference and live product page rather than assuming a prototype-era description still applies.

What comes with the Brooklyn 36 depends on the exact configuration. MAEN’s collection description lists a lizard-pattern TPU rubber strap measuring 20 mm at the lugs and tapering to 16 mm. It also describes a five-link bracelet with polished and brushed surfaces, a butterfly clasp and screwed links. Fratello described the prototype it handled as having a Jubilee-style bracelet. These descriptions concern different configurations and should not be treated as a single standard package.
MAEN’s M5.1.6 page has listed Jubilee, flat-link and grey FKM strap upgrades, but accessory availability and prices can change. Confirm the exact reference, lug width, included bracelet or strap, and compatibility before ordering a replacement or upgrade; a listing for one variant does not establish fit or availability for another.
Is the MAEN Brooklyn 36 any good?
Whether it suits you depends on what you want from a compact watch. The proportions and layered dial were positives for Svaboe in his prototype hands-on, and the 36 mm diameter with 46 mm lug-to-lug gives a useful starting point for readers who prefer smaller watches. The calendar adds more visual and functional detail than a plain three-hand watch, but it also requires manual date correction after shorter months.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- It may suit you if: you want a compact steel watch, enjoy a layered vintage-inspired dial and prefer a calendar display over chronograph timing.
- Look elsewhere if: you specifically need a stopwatch, want a perpetual calendar, or do not want to correct the date after shorter months.
- Before buying: compare the exact production reference’s dial, total thickness, water-resistance guidance, included bracelet or strap, regional price, warranty and delivery terms.
Fratello’s 2023 review listed a price of €679.20 in the prototype-era context. That is a historical listing, not a current quote or a reliable guide to pricing in every region.
