The main practical differences are case fit, strap width and the power-reserve figure published on each official product page: 58 hours for the 39 mm and 48 hours for the 42 mm. Hanhart describes the white-dial design as inspired by a rare historic 417 ES execution; that history is the manufacturer’s account.
What is the Hanhart 417 ES Moby Dick?
It is a white-dial version of Hanhart’s 417 ES chronograph. Hanhart frames the model as a return of a collector’s item, writing in its official product description: “The launch of the Hanhart 417 ES Moby Dick marks the return of another collector’s item among stop wristwatches.” The historical rarity and inspiration are manufacturer claims, rather than independently verified archival findings.
Hanhart currently lists the Moby Dick in two case sizes. Both are manual-winding chronographs powered by the Sellita SW 510 M and share the same stated chronograph layout and 10 bar water resistance.

Fit and strap compatibility
The 39 mm model has a stated 46 mm lug-to-lug measurement, useful when assessing how far the watch may span across the wrist. Hanhart does not state the 42 mm model’s lug-to-lug measurement on its product page, so diameter alone cannot establish how the two versions will sit on a particular wrist. The 42 mm page does specify a 13.3 mm height with crystal.
The lug widths differ: choose a 20 mm replacement strap for the 39 mm version and a 21 mm strap for the 42 mm. Hanhart lists both leather-strap and steel-bracelet configurations; confirm the configuration and included bracelet or strap on the specific listing before ordering.

Power reserve: note the page-specific figures
Hanhart states 58 hours for the 39 mm model and 48 hours for the 42 mm model. These are the figures published on the respective official size pages; the pages give different values, and the available specifications do not explain the difference. Treat each number as specific to its listing rather than assuming one figure applies to both.
What specifications do both sizes share?
- Movement: manual-winding Sellita SW 510 M, according to both Hanhart product pages.
- Chronograph display: bicompax layout with central stop seconds and a 30-minute counter.
- Small seconds: specified on both listings.
- Water resistance: 10 bar / 10 ATM on both listings.
Which size should you choose?
- Consider the 39 mm if you want the smaller listed diameter, a documented 46 mm lug-to-lug measurement, or compatibility with 20 mm straps. Its official page states a 58-hour power reserve.
- Consider the 42 mm if you prefer the larger listed diameter or want the 21 mm strap width. Its official page specifies 13.3 mm height with crystal and a 48-hour power reserve.
Those dimensions do not by themselves predict comfort: wrist shape, strap or bracelet, and personal preference all matter. The 42 mm listing does not provide a lug-to-lug measurement for a direct span comparison.
