The Pixel Watch 3’s meaningful fitness upgrade is not a longer list of exercise modes. At launch in September 2024, Google added a connected training-and-recovery system—Readiness, Cardio Load, Target Cardio Load, Morning Brief and structured running tools—then tied it to deeper post-run analysis. The watch is now a previous-generation model, and Google’s current pages use “Google Health” where launch material said “Fitbit,” so subscription labels and menus can differ by market and software version.

This guide separates what debuted on Pixel Watch 3 from older Fitbit functions, identifies where each feature works, and explains whether it is useful for casual exercise, regular running or serious training.

What was actually new on Pixel Watch 3?

Google announced Pixel Watch 3 on August 13, 2024, with general availability from September 10, 2024. The headline change was an integrated coaching layer rather than dozens of new sensors or sports profiles. The table shows the launch additions and their current status.

Feature What it does Where you use it Subscription status today Best suited to
Updated Daily Readiness Estimates recovery from sleep, resting heart rate and heart-rate variability (HRV) Watch and Google Health app Google Store currently labels Readiness subscription-dependent; check your plan and country Anyone balancing training and recovery
Cardio Load Estimates accumulated cardiovascular work from workouts and daily activity Watch and app trends Availability and paywall can vary Regular exercisers
Target Cardio Load Suggests an amount of cardiovascular work based on recent load and readiness Watch and app Availability and paywall can vary People training consistently
Morning Brief Daily summary of sleep, readiness, target load, goals and weather Primarily the watch, with app detail Some elements may depend on the current plan Daily planning
Workout Builder Creates interval and target-based runs Build in the app; execute on the watch Verify current app access Runners
Live run guidance Haptic and spoken pace, distance, zone and interval cues Watch during a workout Core functionality, but audio and connectivity setup matter Phone-free training
Advanced form insights Cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation, ground-contact time and related relationships Mainly post-run in the app Google Health support currently indicates Premium for advanced insights Runners comparing technique over time
Loss of Pulse Detection Attempts to call emergency services after a possible loss of pulse Watch, where supported Region, regulatory clearance, software and connectivity dependent Safety, not training

Google’s launch announcement describes the feature set here: Pixel Watch 3 announcement. “New” does not mean exclusive forever: Google can extend Fitbit/Google Health metrics to older watches or other devices.

Daily Readiness: a recovery estimate, not a diagnosis

Daily Readiness is the refreshed version of Fitbit’s recovery score. Google says it combines sleep, resting heart rate and HRV to estimate how prepared you may be for strenuous activity. A higher result is a reason to consider a harder session; a lower result suggests maintaining intensity or prioritising recovery.

The score is guidance, not a medical assessment or a guarantee that you are safe—or unsafe—to exercise. It can be misleading when you miss overnight wear, have gaps in heart-rate data, change time zones or routines, fit the watch differently, or are ill or taking medication. Treat an unusual score as a prompt to check how you feel, not as an instruction to ignore symptoms.

Google’s launch explanation is at Google’s Readiness, Cardio Load and Target Load explanation. The current US product page still lists sleep, resting heart rate and HRV as inputs and marks Readiness as subscription-dependent: Pixel Watch 3 Google Store page.

Cardio Load and Target Cardio Load answer different questions

Cardio Load: how much work has accumulated?

Cardio Load estimates how hard your cardiovascular system has worked across recorded workouts and broader daily activity. It is not calories burned, Active Zone Minutes, a heart-rate zone, VO2 max or a direct measure of fitness. A hard interval session can raise it sharply; a day of lower-intensity movement can add smaller amounts.

  • 【Smart Message Notification】The watch can receive Social software message notifications from mobile phones, including SMS, QQ, WeChat, WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter, etc. Also can receive incoming call notifications and reject calls. so you never miss an important call or message.

Use it as a trend. A single low value can reflect missing activity, poor sensor contact or too little history rather than an easy day. Google says the app can separate load by workout and show changes over time.

Target Cardio Load: how much should you do next?

Target Cardio Load is a recommended amount of cardiovascular work, using recent Cardio Load and Readiness (Google’s launch material called it “Target Load”). It is intended to balance stimulus and recovery, not prescribe a universal training plan. Someone who wears the watch consistently and trains regularly will generally get more useful context than someone with sparse or unreliable data.

Metric Question it addresses What it is not
Readiness How prepared might I be today? A clinical test or injury clearance
Cardio Load How much cardiovascular work have I accumulated? Calories, fitness level or a single workout score
Target Cardio Load What amount of work may balance progress and recovery? A mandatory prescription or race-training plan

For example, poor sleep can lower Readiness; a hard run raises Cardio Load; the next Target Cardio Load may then favour an easier day. That relationship is the useful part of the system—not the individual number in isolation.

Morning Brief turns the scores into a routine

Morning Brief is a presentation layer rather than a new sensor. Google described a daily digest delivered when you wake, combining sleep, Readiness, Target Load and progress toward an exercise goal. The current Store description emphasises Sleep Score, Readiness and weather. It saves you from opening several screens before deciding how to train, while the app remains the place for history and detail.

Workout Builder makes structured runs practical

Pixel Watch 3 can execute a run built from steps such as warm-up, a time- or distance-based interval, pace or heart-rate-zone targets, recovery periods and cool-down. Creation may be easier in the Fitbit/Google Health phone app than on the watch, and labels have changed as Google moved from Fitbit branding. A current how-to shows the launch-era route into the custom-workout interface: Tom’s Guide’s custom-workout walkthrough. Confirm the button names in your installed app.

During the run, the watch can provide haptic alerts and spoken cues for pace, distance, intervals or heart-rate zones. This is different from simply recording a route: the watch is checking the workout step and prompting you while you run. Test notification permissions, Bluetooth earbuds, downloaded audio and phone/LTE connectivity before relying on it in a race; a cue that works at home may not work when those dependencies change.

Running-form analysis is descriptive, not a diagnosis

Post-run analysis can include cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation, ground-contact time and, where shown by the current software, vertical ratio. Google’s explanation discusses how cadence and stride length relate to pace; the current Google Health help page lists advanced running-form insights for Pixel Watch 3 users with Premium: Google’s marathon-training article and Google Health running-form help.

These numbers are most useful for comparing similar easy runs, intervals and long runs over time. Hills, surface, speed, shoes, weather, fatigue, running style and wrist fit can all change them. Do not chase a supposedly perfect value or use one run to diagnose injury risk. Look for a persistent change under comparable conditions, then discuss pain or injury with a qualified clinician.

Personal records and context around a workout

Depending on region and software build, the running experience can show personal bests or distance milestones (such as 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon), training history, weekly exercise goals, post-run summaries and heart-rate-zone distribution. Check the current Google Health app for the exact record types available on your account; Google does not promise every display in every market.

What changes for non-runners?

Google’s current Store copy advertises tracking for more than 40 exercises. That is broad activity recording, not 40 sports with equally deep sport-specific analysis. Most activities receive duration, heart rate, calories, zones and history; running receives the deepest new coaching and form detail. Specialized athletes may find fewer dedicated metrics than on Garmin, Apple Watch or Samsung alternatives.

Hardware improvements that affect fitness use

  • Two sizes: 41mm and 45mm, so the larger model offers more room for workout data.
  • Display: Google says the 45mm screen has more than 40% more area than Pixel Watch 2 and reaches up to 2,000 nits, useful for glancing at pace outdoors.
  • Battery: Google rates it for up to 24 hours with always-on display or up to 36 hours in Battery Saver mode. GPS-heavy workouts, LTE, music and always-on use can reduce real-world endurance; charging remains relevant if you want uninterrupted sleep and recovery data.
  • Software and compatibility: The listed specification is Wear OS 5.0 and requires an Android phone running Android 10 or newer; iPhone is not supported. See Google’s specifications.

Which features require a subscription?

Launch coverage used “Fitbit Premium,” while current Google pages use “Google Health” and list Google Health Premium from $9.99 on the US Store. Prices, trials and included features are time-sensitive and market-specific. Buying the watch does not permanently unlock every coaching insight.

Capability What can be said safely today
Basic exercise recording, heart rate and standard workout data Core watch functions; exact limits vary by activity and software
Readiness Current US Store labels it subscription-required
Advanced running-form insights Current Google Health help page indicates Premium access
Cardio Load, Target Cardio Load and Morning Brief elements Google’s launch materials describe them; current paywall and labels should be checked in your market
Google Health Premium See the current plan, price and trial terms at Google Health Premium

What was not new?

Pixel Watch 3 did not invent heart-rate tracking, sleep tracking, GPS, ECG capability, Active Zone Minutes, ordinary exercise recording or standard workout modes. Its advance was combining existing Fitbit measurements with new load, recovery, running-workout and presentation layers. Likewise, “40-plus exercises” should not be read as 40 newly engineered sport profiles.

Loss of Pulse Detection is safety, not fitness

Loss of Pulse Detection is designed to detect a possible loss of pulse and, where supported, prompt emergency services. It is not workout monitoring and cannot detect every cardiac event. Region, regulatory status, software, setup and connectivity matter. Google announced US FDA clearance and availability in February 2025, after the 2024 launch: Google’s FDA-clearance announcement. It should supplement—not replace—emergency planning or medical care.

Who should buy Pixel Watch 3 for fitness?

Good fit

  • Android and Pixel users who want a smartwatch, Google apps and Fitbit/Google Health coaching together.
  • Casual or intermediate runners who want structured workouts without a dedicated running watch.
  • Fitbit users who value sleep, recovery and readiness trends.
  • People comfortable charging daily and paying for selected advanced insights.

Weaker fit

  • Ultramarathoners, triathletes and high-volume athletes needing multi-day battery, advanced navigation, race planning or deep multisport metrics.
  • Buyers who reject recurring subscriptions.
  • iPhone owners, because Pixel Watch 3 requires Android.
  • Anyone who needs several days of normal smartwatch battery life.

Garmin’s ecosystem is generally stronger for dedicated endurance training, navigation, battery and multisport depth; Apple Watch is a stronger option within the iPhone ecosystem. Fitbit Charge 6, Sense 2 or Versa 4 may suit buyers who prioritise fitness tracking over Wear OS apps and calls. See Google’s current watch category at Google Store watches and trackers, Garmin at Garmin and Apple Watch at Apple.

Pixel Watch 3 fitness verdict

Pixel Watch 3 is a worthwhile upgrade for Android users who want an integrated loop: sleep and HRV inform Readiness, workouts build Cardio Load, Target Cardio Load suggests the next dose of activity, Morning Brief surfaces the decision, and structured runs deliver cues on the wrist. That is substantially more useful than simply adding another exercise tile.

It is not a professional training watch. Composite scores are estimates, advanced insights may require Google Health Premium, menus and feature access can change, and daily charging can interrupt the very overnight data the system uses. Buy it for the Google smartwatch experience plus approachable running and recovery coaching; choose a Garmin-class endurance watch if battery, navigation and specialised training depth matter more than ecosystem integration.
