A mechanical chronograph is a second timing mechanism built on top of an ordinary going train. It has no battery and no motor of its own. When you press the start pusher, a clutch couples the chronograph to the gear train that is already running, and the chronograph hand moves. Stopping uncouples it. Reset uses a hammer that pushes heart-shaped cams back to zero. The part people often get confused is the split in roles: a control system (column wheel or cam) sequences the commands, while the clutch makes or breaks the power connection.
The core idea: borrowed power
The mainspring drives the watch’s gear train, and that train keeps the regular timekeeping running. According to the Fondation Haute Horlogerie and Seiko Museum Ginza, the chronograph works by coupling its own timing train to this running train when started, and disengaging when stopped. The chronograph hands therefore take their motion from the same energy source and regulating organ as the time display.
Three groups of parts do the work:
- Pushers and levers carry your input into the movement.
- A control element (column wheel or cam) changes the mechanism’s state in the correct order.
- A clutch physically connects or disconnects the chronograph from the going train.
Start, stop and reset step by step
Start
The start command shifts the control element so the clutch engages. The chronograph seconds hand begins to turn with the going train.
Stop
The next press of the same pusher (in the common two-pusher layout) changes the state again and disengages the clutch. The hand stays where it stopped, so you can read the elapsed time. The watch itself keeps running.

Reset
Reset is performed with the other pusher, and should ordinarily be done once timing has stopped unless the watch’s documentation says otherwise. A hammer presses against heart-shaped cams fixed to the chronograph hand arbors. The cams turn until their lowest point rests against the hammer, which brings each hand to zero. Breguet describes the trigger in its Type 20/XX explainer: “When the owner commands a return to zero, the push of the button releases a spring which activates the return.” That is Breguet’s description of its own mechanism.
Layouts vary by caliber. Start/stop on one pusher and reset on the other is common, but not universal, and special functions change the sequence.

- USE INTRODUCE:Start use the watch, please manually adjust the crown 30 to 40 turns first. When the crown cannot rotate, it indicates that the watch has stored full energy; Please stop adjusting the crown at this time, otherwise it may damage the movement spring.Sub dial chronograph second and 30 minute Sub Dail, can record every minute and second,Please Note:When watch stores energy, Sub-dial chronograph second hands can work continuously and cannot be controlled.
- PERFECT GIFT: This is a classic pilot timepiece with a rich historical and cultural heritage. The exquisite design perfectly blends with the functions of the timepiece, making it perfect for men's daily lives, dates, and meetings to wear; It is also the preferred gift for graduation ceremonies, birthdays, weddings, Father's Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Valentine's Day.
Two separate design choices
“Column wheel” and “vertical clutch” are not rival names for one feature. They answer different questions, so a given chronograph combines one choice from each.
| Question | Option | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| How are commands sequenced? | Column wheel | A castellated wheel coordinates the levers for start, stop and reset. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie calls this the traditional technique. |
| Cam | A cam does the same coordinating job in a more rationalized design, as both the Fondation and Seiko Museum Ginza describe. | |
| How is power coupled? | Horizontal (lateral) clutch | A transmission wheel moves sideways to mesh with a chronograph wheel. |
| Vertical clutch | Components stacked along a shared axis are brought into contact, like a friction clutch. |
Seiko Museum Ginza identifies Seiko’s 6139 Speed Timer as the first commercial self-winding chronograph with both a vertical clutch and a column wheel. Treat such “first” claims as the museum’s, since histories define firsts differently.

What these choices do and do not tell you
The labels describe architecture, not a guaranteed quality ranking. A column wheel does not automatically mean better accuracy or a nicer pusher feel, and a vertical clutch does not automatically mean a better watch. Breguet’s own account stresses that vertical-clutch implementations differ, and its performance statements describe its own design. Real behavior depends on the complete caliber.
When comparing specific watches, judge them on:
- how smoothly the hand starts (any jump or flutter at engagement),
- timekeeping of the going train with the chronograph running versus stopped,
- construction and how easily it can be serviced,
- the pusher action in your hands.
Model-specific evidence matters more than the architecture label. Patek Philippe’s CH 28-520 HU, for example, is a documented vertical-clutch caliber, but it is one example and shouldn’t be generalized to all chronographs.

Flyback: reset and restart in one action
A flyback chronograph lets you reset and immediately restart a running chronograph with a single operation, without stopping first. Breguet describes its flyback as combining stop, reset and restart in one press of the lower pusher, and ties it to timing consecutive flight segments. Only use this on a movement designed for it; on a standard chronograph, resetting while running is not what the mechanism is built for.
Chronograph versus chronometer
A chronograph records elapsed time. A chronometer is a movement certified against official precision standards. A watch can be both, but one word describes a function and the other a credential.
