Fitbit estimates sleep from movement and heart-rate-related signals collected at your wrist; it does not directly measure brain waves like a clinical sleep study. The device uses movement and heart-rate patterns to estimate when you are asleep and, on eligible devices, to estimate Awake, Light, Deep, and REM sleep. Published validation results describe specific algorithms and samples, not a guarantee for every person or night.
That makes Fitbit useful for tracking sleep duration and longer-term patterns. It does not make the device equivalent to polysomnography, the clinical test that records brain activity and other signals.
How Fitbit knows you are probably asleep
Fitbit wrist devices automatically detect sleep when worn to bed. Google Health says the device records sleep after your body has been completely at rest and has not moved for about an hour. Small movements, such as rolling over, can help confirm sleep status.
The algorithm does not treat every period of stillness as sleep. Someone reading in bed, for example, may be nearly motionless but awake. Movement and heart-rate patterns together help the system estimate sleep and wakefulness; the result remains an inference.

For the best chance of a complete reading:
- Wear the Fitbit on your wrist overnight.
- Keep it comfortably secure so its sensors maintain contact with your skin.
- Make sure it has enough battery to remain on through the night.
- Sync the device and review the results in the app after waking.
A loose band can affect sensor contact. The goal is stable contact, not maximum pressure.
Which sensors does Fitbit use?
The accelerometer measures movement
The accelerometer detects changes in wrist movement. Movement patterns help Fitbit estimate periods of stillness, movement during sleep, and more active wakefulness. Movement alone cannot reliably distinguish sleep from quiet wakefulness, which is why it is combined with heart-rate-related information.
Heart-rate-related signals
Fitbit uses heart-rate information to help predict sleep. Google Research’s 2026 description of updated sleep-tracking algorithms identifies accelerometer data and inter-beat intervals derived from the wearable photoplethysmogram as inputs. Inter-beat intervals are the timing differences between heartbeats; they are related to, but not the same as, heart rate.
Heart-rate readings can be affected by fit, movement, and individual physiology. Because these signals contribute to sleep estimates, changes or gaps in the readings can affect the result.
How Fitbit estimates Light, Deep, and REM sleep
On supported devices, Fitbit combines movement and heart-rate information to estimate Awake, Light, Deep, and REM sleep. These are algorithmic classifications from wrist signals, not direct observations of brain activity.

| Fitbit label | Broad interpretation | What the estimate represents |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Likely includes conventional N1 and N2 sleep. | An estimate based on movement and heart-rate-related patterns. |
| Deep | Likely corresponds to conventional N3 sleep. | An estimate from the signals available to the wearable. |
| REM | Rapid-eye-movement sleep. | An inferred stage; Fitbit does not directly record eye movements or brain waves. |
| Awake | Periods estimated to be wakefulness. | A classification from movement and heart-rate-related patterns. |
Google Health describes Light as likely covering N1 and N2, and Deep as likely covering N3. The labels are useful for viewing patterns, but they are not equivalent to a sleep-stage reading from polysomnography.
How accurate is Fitbit sleep tracking?
Fitbit can be useful for estimating sleep duration and following personal patterns, but no result should be treated as a promise about a particular person or night. Validation depends on the algorithm, devices, methods, and people evaluated.
A 2026 Google Research paper compared an updated algorithm with the then-current Fitbit algorithm on a defined validation task. For four-class sleep-stage classification, it reported average Cohen’s kappa of 0.63 (standard deviation 0.12) for the updated algorithm versus 0.56 (standard deviation 0.13) for the then-current Fitbit algorithm. Average accuracy was 77% (standard deviation 0.078) versus 71% (standard deviation 0.10), respectively. These are study results, not universal accuracy guarantees.
Google’s 2026 product announcement separately reported an additional 15% increase in sleep-staging accuracy for Public Preview users compared with the previous generation. The announcement described a staged rollout, so availability may depend on rollout status.
For historical context, Fitbit’s 2017 announcement described an evaluation of Alta HR, Blaze, and Charge 2 against sleep stages scored by polysomnography technicians. That older company-reported result should not be presented as validation of every current Fitbit model.

Which Fitbit devices provide sleep stages?
Device capabilities differ. Google Health says heart-rate-capable devices generally provide sleep stages, while calling out Charge HR and Surge as exceptions. Basic sleep-pattern information may be available without stage data. Feature availability can also vary by device, region, app, and subscription, so check the current listing for the exact model before buying.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Sleep timing | Whether the exact device supports basic sleep-pattern tracking. |
| Sleep stages | Whether the model is eligible for Light, Deep, and REM estimates. |
| App and subscription | Whether a feature is available in your region and whether Premium is required. |
| Medical use | Fitbit sleep information is for general wellness, not diagnosis. |
Sleep Score and other app features
Google Health provides information about Sleep Score, but exact features and availability may vary by device, region, and app version. Check the current Google Health help information for the score’s components and eligibility rather than assuming that every Fitbit account has the same features.

What the research says about researchers
The title refers to a Fitbit researcher, but the available research desk sources do not establish which interview it means. Google’s published Sleep Profile feature names Fitbit research scientist Karla Gleichauf and describes work engineering more than 1,000 sleep features and using machine-learning clustering to identify about six sleeper types. A separate Google interview names Conor Heneghan and discusses heart-rate patterns and sleep tracking. Neither should be asserted as the definitive researcher behind the title without confirming the original editorial source.

Google Health describes Fitbit sleep information as a general-wellness feature, not a medical-use feature or sleep-apnea prescreener. Sleep Score and stage estimates are not intended to diagnose or mitigate disease.

If you have loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, gasping or choking during sleep, persistent insomnia, or severe daytime sleepiness, discuss those symptoms with a healthcare professional. Do not rely on a wearable score to rule out a sleep disorder.

How to use Fitbit sleep data sensibly
- Look for patterns rather than isolated nights. One unusual estimate is not a diagnosis.
- Compare the data with your diary and symptoms. Note sleep timing and how rested you feel.
- Check the fit when readings look implausible. Stable sensor contact helps provide usable signals.
- Do not treat stage labels as targets. They are estimates, not direct measurements.
- Discuss persistent concerns with a healthcare professional. Do not self-diagnose from wearable data.
The bottom line
Fitbit estimates sleep from wrist movement and heart-rate-related signals, then uses algorithms to estimate sleep timing and, on eligible devices, sleep stages. Research validation has reported improvements across algorithm generations, but those results apply to defined samples and methods rather than every user or night.
Use Fitbit sleep data as general-wellness information for personal trends, not as a medical diagnosis or replacement for a sleep study.
