Thor Svaboe’s 2021 account of the Furlan Marri Laccato Nero, reference 1022-A, is a story about changing priorities: the watch’s shape, dial and chronograph action mattered more to him than whether its movement was fully mechanical. It did not make him declare quartz superior. It made him realize that, for this watch, he cared less about what was under the case back.
The watch that changed the equation
In his December 2021 Fratello article, watch writer Thor Svaboe describes being surprised by how much he enjoyed the Furlan Marri Laccato Nero. His turning point was personal, not a verdict on what every enthusiast should want: “My surprise came when I realized that I didn’t care about what was under the case back.”
That reaction came from wearing and interacting with this particular watch. Its compact chronograph proportions, layered dial and satisfying pushers won him over despite a movement that did not deliver the traditional fully mechanical experience he had valued.
What the Laccato Nero offers on the wrist
The Laccato Nero is a twin-register chronograph identified in Svaboe’s article as reference 1022-A. He describes a 38 mm case, 45 mm lug-to-lug and an approximately 11 mm profile. The brand’s current product page lists thickness as 11.5 mm; the figures come from different sources, so they should not be treated as a single verified measurement.

Svaboe’s enthusiasm is rooted in the watch’s physical details: a stepped case, polished accents and a glossy black dial with recessed registers. Those are his aesthetic judgments, but they explain why the watch registered as more than a way to get a chronograph at a lower level of mechanical complexity.
How its meca-quartz chronograph works
The official specification names a Seiko VK64 movement and describes it as meca-quartz: quartz timekeeping paired with a mechanical chronograph module. Furlan Marri’s shorthand is “Sweeping like a Mechanical, accurate like a Quartz.” That is brand language, not an independently verified performance test.

The distinction matters in use. The chronograph hand sweeps when the chronograph is running, and the brand says the chronograph resets instantly. That does not mean the regular timekeeping seconds display sweeps continuously; Svaboe specifically notes the absence of a ticking seconds hand as part of the experience he accepted.
The layout also differs from the arrangement some buyers expect. Svaboe identifies a 24-hour register at 3 o’clock and a 60-minute counter at 9 o’clock. He regarded those counters as quirks, but the recessed finishing made the overall dial work for him. The current product page also lists a tachymeter and sapphire crystal.

Why the trade-off worked for him
A fully mechanical watch can be part of the appeal precisely because of its movement: its construction, operation and relationship to traditional watchmaking. The Laccato Nero offered Svaboe a different balance. Quartz handled timekeeping, while the mechanical chronograph module gave him an engaging start-stop-reset interaction and a sweeping chronograph hand.
In his account, neither movement category won in the abstract. Rather, he found that the case proportions, finishing, dial architecture and pleasure of using the chronograph outweighed his previous insistence on a fully mechanical movement. The useful question for another buyer is therefore not whether meca-quartz is universally better, but which parts of the watch experience matter most to them.

Who may enjoy this kind of watch
- Consider it if you like a traditional-looking chronograph, want quartz timekeeping, and find the mechanical action of the chronograph appealing.
- Look elsewhere if a fully mechanical movement is central to your enjoyment, or if you strongly prefer a conventional small-seconds display or a different counter arrangement.
- Try the fit if possible: the reported 38 mm diameter and 45 mm lug-to-lug are useful starting points, but wrist shape and personal preference determine how those dimensions feel.
- Judge the dial in person or from clear images: recessed registers and a glossy surface are design features Svaboe valued, but they may affect legibility or appeal differently for other buyers.
His article does not establish long-term durability, measured accuracy or ownership costs. Those should not be inferred from one positive account or from the brand’s movement description.
