Behind the dial, a calendar drive stores the current date in a 31-position date wheel. During the daily change, a switching system advances the indicators. The surrounding disc carries the units values 0 through 9. It advances for each calendar day, while the tens disc moves only when the units sequence rolls over. The two discs therefore act as a coordinated pair rather than as two independent date displays.
The daily indexing sequence
The calendar train advances the date wheel once per 24-hour cycle. A rocker or related switching part transfers that movement to the indicator system. How 30-day months are handled
A basic 31-position wheel cannot simply be allowed to run unchanged at the end of every month, because some months end at 30. That behavior should not automatically be assigned to every watch carrying the Panorama Date name. Published specialist descriptions note that switching can be gradual on some calibres and a quick jump on others. The two-disc architecture identifies the display, not one universal switching train.
