Most luxury mechanical watches need a complete service about every 5–10 years, but there is no single interval for every model. Omega recommends a complete service every 5–8 years, Patek Philippe cites 8–10 years for a specific model instruction, and Rolex says approximately every 10 years depending on the model and real-life use. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry gives broader guidance of inspection and cleaning every 3–5 years. Those recommendations describe different scopes of work, so your watch’s reference, movement, age, use, exposure to water or shocks, and documented service history determine the sensible date.
“Women’s” does not create a separate maintenance timetable. A small case, diamond setting, or dress style may change handling risks, but the movement and conditions in which the watch is worn are what drive service needs.

Use the manufacturer’s recommendation for your exact reference as the starting point, then shorten it when the watch is exposed to water, sport, shocks, dust, temperature changes, or heavy daily wear. A running watch is not automatically a healthy watch: lubricants can age, seals can lose elasticity, and accuracy or water resistance can deteriorate before the hands stop.
| Guidance source | Published recommendation | What it covers and how to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Rolex | Approximately every 10 years | The interval depends on the model and real-life usage. Rolex directs owners to an Official Rolex Retailer or Service Centre. |
| Omega | Complete service every 5–8 years | Omega separately recommends checking water resistance once a year, so the annual check is not a substitute for the complete service. |
| Patek Philippe | Every 8–10 years | The cited wording is from an official instruction for a specific model. Confirm the interval for your exact reference before applying it generally. |
| Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry | Inspection and cleaning every 3–5 years | This is general mechanical-watch industry guidance and may represent an inspection or cleaning cycle rather than the same work as a manufacturer’s complete service. |
These are recommendations, not measured failure rates or guarantees. No dated population study establishes that a particular year is the point at which every watch will fail. Treat the calendar as a planning tool and the watch’s condition as the deciding evidence.

Does a women’s watch need a different schedule from a men’s watch?
No. The cited manufacturer guidance does not assign a separate schedule by gender. Servicing is driven by the calibre and construction, the watch’s age, how often it is worn, the environment, shocks, water exposure, and the quality and date of the last service.
Movement type matters more than case size
Mechanical movements contain a mainspring, gear train, escapement, and lubricated bearings. Their service requirements are the basis of the intervals above. A quartz or hybrid model may have a different battery, seal, and movement-maintenance schedule, so use the instructions for that specific reference rather than transferring a mechanical-watch interval to it.

Small cases and complications can change the practical risk
A compact case can be more vulnerable to a hard impact simply because there is less room around the movement, while a chronograph or calendar adds mechanisms that a basic time-only movement does not have. These facts do not create a universal number; they are reasons to ask the brand or a qualified watchmaker whether your reference needs a more conservative plan.
What symptoms mean the watch should be serviced sooner?
Arrange an assessment promptly when performance changes or the watch has suffered an event that could compromise the movement or seals. Do not wait for the calendar interval if you notice any of the following:

- It is running noticeably faster or slower than it used to.
- The power reserve is shorter, or the watch stops before its normal reserve is exhausted.
- It stops unexpectedly, starts intermittently, or feels rough or abnormal while winding or setting.
- Condensation or mist appears beneath the crystal.
- The watch has received a significant shock, been dropped, or been exposed to water beyond its known rating.
- The crown, pushers, or winding action no longer feel normal.
Rolex specifically directs owners with accuracy problems to an Official Rolex Jeweler or Service Center. Omega notes that ageing gaskets and accidental shocks can affect water resistance, and Cartier calls for prompt service when condensation appears. If moisture is visible, stop exposing the watch to water and seek service immediately; continued running can allow corrosion to spread.
How often should water resistance be checked?
Water resistance is a condition that must be tested, not a permanent feature. Seals age, and opening the case or knocking the watch can compromise them even when the dial and crystal look perfect.
Annual checks and seal replacement
Omega recommends a water-resistance check once a year. Cartier recommends replacing water-resistance seals about once every two years in normal use, and annually when the watch is used for sport or frequent water contact. Those are brand-specific recommendations, so follow the guidance for your reference when it differs.
What happens after a case is opened?
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry says seals should be replaced whenever a water-resistant watch is opened and that a specialist reseller can check water resistance. Ask the service provider to record the test result and the conditions under which it was obtained. A passed test is evidence of that test at that time; it is not permission to ignore a later impact or a newly aged seal.

Should you use an authorized service center or an independent watchmaker?
Choose an authorized center when warranty eligibility, proprietary parts, factory documentation, or complex movement expertise is the priority. A qualified independent specialist can be appropriate when they can demonstrate equivalent technical capability and provide clear records and a service warranty.
| Decision factor | Authorized brand center | Qualified independent specialist |
|---|---|---|
| Movement and brand expertise | Trained for the brand’s current procedures and service standards. | Suitable when the watchmaker can document expertise with your exact calibre and complications. |
| Parts access | Direct access to brand-supplied parts is more likely. | Ask where replacement parts come from and whether non-original parts would be used. |
| Water-resistance testing | Usually built into the brand’s service process. | Confirm that pressure testing is available and that results will be recorded. |
| Records and warranty | May provide brand records and a manufacturer-backed service guarantee. | Request a written service warranty, timing results, and a replaced-parts list. |
| Vintage or collectible watch | Ask how the brand handles originality and historical components. | Discuss preserving case geometry, dial, hands, and other original parts before authorizing work. |
| Turnaround and location | May require shipment to a regional or national center. | Local access may be easier, but capability and documentation vary widely. |
For a vintage or collectible piece, “best” does not automatically mean the provider offering the most polishing or the fastest turnaround. Make originality and preservation explicit in writing before work begins.
What should a complete service estimate include?
The word “service” can describe very different scopes. Before approving a quote, ask the provider to identify each included operation rather than accepting a single bundled price.
- Whether the estimate is for a complete movement service or only an inspection, regulation, battery change, or seal replacement.
- Gasket replacement and the specific water-resistance or pressure test to be performed.
- Regulation or timing checks, with the results supplied when the work is complete.
- Any replacement parts, their provenance, and whether original parts are required or available.
- Polishing: whether it is optional, what surfaces would be altered, and whether it can be declined.
- Expected turnaround, the service warranty, and what happens if additional damage is found after opening the case.
- Whether unauthorized previous work affects the brand’s warranty or acceptance policy.
Keep the final receipt, replaced-part list, timing results, and water-resistance result with the watch’s papers. Those records establish a useful baseline for the next decision and help a future provider understand what has already been done.

How do you book service without risking unnecessary work?
- Identify the watch. Record the brand, reference number, serial information, calibre if known, movement type, and any complications. Photograph the watch and its paperwork before handing it over.
- Establish its history. Find the last service receipt or ask the previous owner, retailer, or brand database when the watch was last serviced. If the date is unknown, say so; an unknown history is not proof that service is overdue, but it removes an important planning reference.
- Describe symptoms and events. Note timing changes, power-reserve loss, winding feel, condensation, a drop, or water exposure. Include when each event occurred and whether the watch continued running.
- Request a written scope. Ask the center or watchmaker to list complete service, gaskets, pressure testing, regulation, parts, and optional polishing separately. Ask how additional work will be authorized.
- Check credentials and warranty terms. Confirm that the provider works on your movement, can pressure-test the case, documents timing results, and supplies a written service warranty. For a brand center, verify whether the location is an Official Retailer, Service Centre, Authorized Retailer, or Authorized Service Center as applicable.
- Set preservation instructions. For vintage, engraved, gem-set, or collectible watches, state whether polishing, dial work, hand replacement, or non-original parts require your prior approval.
- Inspect on collection. Compare the serial and accessories, review the service report, check the winding and setting feel, and confirm that the water-resistance result and warranty are documented.
How should you apply the guidance to major luxury brands?
Rolex
Rolex frames its recommendation around the model and real-life usage and directs owners to an Official Rolex Retailer or Service Centre. If accuracy changes or the watch has suffered a shock, contact an authorized channel rather than waiting for the approximate calendar interval.
Omega
Omega separates two decisions: a yearly water-resistance check and a complete service on its longer cycle. Owners who swim, sail, play sport, or frequently expose the watch to water should treat the annual seal and pressure check as a distinct requirement.
Patek Philippe
The 8–10-year wording comes from an official instruction for a particular Patek Philippe model. Use it as a reference point only after confirming the exact reference, calibre, and any updated instruction that applies to your watch.
Cartier
Cartier’s seal guidance is especially relevant to watches used for sport or frequent water contact. Condensation under the crystal is an urgent service signal, not a cosmetic issue to monitor at home.

What if the watch is still running after the recommended interval?
Continued operation is useful evidence, but it does not prove that lubricants, seals, and timing performance remain within specification. Compare the watch’s current behavior with its documented history, arrange a condition and water-resistance assessment, and let the provider distinguish a full service from a less invasive check when the evidence supports that choice.
Conversely, a watch that is inside its nominal interval may still need immediate attention after a shock, water exposure, abnormal winding, accuracy change, or condensation. Event-based symptoms override calendar-based planning.

Keep the manufacturer’s exact reference instructions with the service records, schedule the brand’s recommended water-resistance check when applicable, and set a reminder for the next complete-service window. Between visits, avoid testing water resistance by deliberately immersing a watch with unknown seal condition, and have any impact or moisture event assessed promptly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear a luxury watch while its service date is unknown?
You can wear it cautiously if there are no symptoms, but treat water exposure as unsafe until a specialist has checked the seals. Arrange an assessment that records timing performance and water resistance, then use those results to establish a new baseline.
Does a service erase a watch’s original parts or value?
Not necessarily. Tell the provider in advance that originality matters and require approval before polishing or replacing visible components. The written parts list and preservation instructions help distinguish necessary movement work from optional cosmetic changes.
Is a pressure test enough to prove a watch is safe for swimming?
No. A test describes the watch’s condition at the time of testing; a later shock, crown left open, or aging seal can change that condition. Follow the water-use limits for the exact model and stop using water if condensation or abnormal crown operation appears.
