For an ultra-thin mechanical watch worn regularly, plan a professional check-up about every two years and a complete movement overhaul about every four to five years. Bring it in sooner after a shock, moisture exposure, suspected magnetism or a noticeable change in its daily rate. Published 2026 prices range from about $910 for a complete standard mechanical service to $3,700 for some extra-thin complicated work; a tourbillon can cost CHF 1,235 before parts and local charges.
Those are planning figures, not universal tariffs. The caliber, complication count, condition, replacement parts, taxes, shipping and country determine the final invoice. Ask for a written estimate after the watch has been diagnosed.

What service schedule should I follow for an ultra-thin mechanical watch?
A two-stage schedule is the most practical approach: arrange a check-up roughly every two years, then budget for a complete overhaul every four to five years. This combines published guidance from several manufacturers rather than imposing a single mechanical rule on every model.
Every two years: a condition check
Piaget offers a complimentary boutique check-up every two years. A check can identify rate drift, magnetism, moisture, worn seals or other symptoms before they become expensive damage. The check is not the same as dismantling and lubricating the movement.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Every four to five years: a complete overhaul
Bvlgari recommends basic service every two to three years and complete service every four to five years. Jaeger-LeCoultre says timing depends on the model, use and climate, and recommends a complete service when the rate begins to show substantial variation. A regularly worn ultra-thin watch should therefore be planned around the four-to-five-year window even if it still runs.
When should I service it sooner?
- After a drop, impact or other shock.
- After suspected magnetism, such as exposure to a strong magnetic clasp, speaker or tool.
- After moisture or condensation appears under the crystal.
- When the watch gains or loses noticeably more time than it previously did.
- When winding feels rough, the power reserve changes sharply or the seconds hand behaves erratically.
These symptoms justify diagnosis rather than simply resetting the time and waiting for the next scheduled interval.

How often should water-resistance seals be renewed?
Water-resistance maintenance is a separate schedule. Piaget recommends renewing seals every three to five years, depending on use and environment. A timing check does not automatically renew water resistance; request gasket replacement and pressure or functional testing as separate line items.
Why do ultra-thin movements need specialist servicing?
Ultra-thin calibers leave very little physical clearance between components. Small errors in lubrication, hand placement, case reassembly or regulation can affect amplitude, rate stability and power reserve. The thinner architecture also makes access and reassembly more exacting than on a robust, conventional mechanical movement.
Using the brand or an authorized specialist is a sensible inference from the manufacturers’ own service descriptions. Piaget says its watchmakers use the required apparatus, documentation, tools and original components. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes the watch as a high-precision instrument that needs oil changes and replacement of worn components. A general repairer may be competent, but the quote should show that the provider has the correct caliber documentation, tools and parts access.

What happens during a complete mechanical overhaul?
A complete service is a movement rebuild, not just a regulation. The usual sequence is:
- Intake and diagnosis: the service center records the model and caliber, examines the case and bracelet, checks the rate and looks for shock, magnetism or moisture damage.
- Disassembly: the movement is removed and dismantled so individual components can be inspected.
- Cleaning: components are cleaned to remove old oils, debris and contamination.
- Inspection and parts replacement: worn or damaged components are replaced as needed. Parts not included in a published starting price are normally quoted separately.
- Reassembly and lubrication: the caliber is rebuilt with fresh oils applied at the specified points.
- Regulation: the watchmaker adjusts the movement and checks its rate in the relevant positions.
- Case and bracelet work: the case and bracelet are cleaned; polishing should be confirmed because it may not be included in every estimate.
- Water-resistance work: gaskets are renewed when required and the case is tested if the watch is designed for water resistance.
- Running and final controls: Piaget specifies a 72-hour running check, while Bvlgari specifies a complete 48-hour test. Jaeger-LeCoultre lists final controls after adjustment and reassembly.
Ask the provider to identify which of these operations are included. “Service” can mean a basic regulation and inspection or the complete overhaul described above.
How much does an ultra-thin mechanical watch service cost?
The following public figures were checked in October 2026. They are starting prices or published ranges, not guaranteed quotations for a particular watch.
| Provider or reference | Published figure | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Piaget (US) | From $910 | Complete mechanical service starting price. Complications start at $1,310; high complications at $3,050. Parts or repairs not listed are estimated separately. |
| Bvlgari | $1,400–$3,700 | Published complete-service range for extra-thin and OCTO Finissimo watches. Taxes are excluded. |
| Frederique Constant | CHF 455–600 | Manufacture-movement full-service benchmark. Parts are additional; local centers may vary the recommended price by approximately plus or minus 20 percent. |
| Frederique Constant tourbillon | CHF 1,235 | Tourbillon full-service benchmark, illustrating the effect of complications; parts are additional. |
Do not convert these figures into a universal price list. A simple ultra-thin hand-wound caliber may fall near a standard mechanical starting price, while a micro-rotor, chronograph or tourbillon can require additional labor and specialized components. Currency conversion, local taxes, shipping and import charges also change the amount you pay.
What drives the final invoice?
- Caliber and complication count: extra-thin, chronograph and tourbillon movements generally require more specialized work.
- Condition: corrosion, bent pivots, worn wheels, damaged threads and shock damage add parts and labor.
- Water-resistance work: gaskets, crown or crystal components and testing can be separate charges.
- Finishing choices: polishing, refinishing or replacement of a damaged bracelet component may be optional.
- Geography: taxes, shipping, customs and local labor rates are not represented consistently in published prices.
Request a written estimate after diagnosis and ask the service center to obtain approval before replacing parts beyond the quoted scope.

Does a full service automatically renew water resistance?
No. Water resistance is a separate operation and should be documented separately on the estimate and service record. Ask whether the center will replace the relevant gaskets, clean the sealing surfaces, perform a pressure or functional test and state the result.
Even a successful test describes the case at the time of service; it does not make an old watch permanently waterproof. Crown use, aging seals and environmental exposure can change performance between services.
How long does servicing take, and what warranty should I expect?
Published modern-service lead times cluster around one to three months, but diagnosis, parts availability, shipping and model complexity can extend them.
| Provider | Indicative complete-service time | Service warranty |
|---|---|---|
| Piaget | Approximately 6–12 weeks in the US | 24 months on service work and replaced parts |
| Jaeger-LeCoultre | Approximately 4–6 weeks for a modern complete service | 24 months on service work and replaced parts |
| Vacheron Constantin | Approximately 4–6 weeks for a modern complete service | Not stated in the published timing information cited here |
| Bvlgari | Not stated in the published price information cited here | 24 months for complete service |
These are indicative windows, not promises. A rare movement, unavailable component or extra diagnostic work can add weeks. Keep the intake receipt and the written scope so any rate or functional issue can be reported under the applicable warranty.
How should I compare service quotes?
Compare like-for-like scopes rather than choosing the lowest headline number.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do before sending the watch?
- Record the reference, serial number, approximate daily rate and power-reserve behavior.
- Photograph the case, crystal, clasp and bracelet to document condition.
- Write down the incident if there was a shock, moisture exposure or suspected magnetism.
- State whether water resistance is important for your use and ask for a separate seal-and-test quote.
- Remove personal straps or accessories unless the center requests them, and use insured shipping if the provider requires shipment.
- Ask for a written diagnosis and approval threshold before non-routine parts are installed.
Do not open the case or attempt to correct a sudden rate change yourself. Ultra-thin components and seals are easily damaged by unsuitable tools.
Can a demagnetizer replace servicing?
No. A watch demagnetizer can be an interim maintenance aid when magnetism is suspected, and demagnetization is one operation listed in Piaget’s check-up work. It cannot replace movement disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, worn-part replacement, timing adjustment or water-resistance testing.
If the watch continues to gain or lose time after demagnetization, arrange a professional diagnosis rather than repeating the treatment indefinitely.
Is a five-year service really necessary if the watch still runs?
For a regularly worn ultra-thin mechanical watch, five years is the outer part of the commonly published four-to-five-year complete-service window, not a guarantee that every watch needs an overhaul on the same day. Continued operation does not show whether oils have aged, seals have deteriorated or components are wearing invisibly. Use, climate and the model’s construction can justify an earlier or later decision, but the safest planning assumption is to reserve funds for the overhaul around year four or five.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I request only a regulation instead of a complete overhaul?
Yes, but ask the service center to define the limits in writing. A regulation changes the rate; it does not clean the movement, renew lubricants or replace worn components, so it may not resolve a problem caused by aging oils or wear.
Should polishing be included in an ultra-thin watch service?
Not automatically. Cosmetic refinishing can alter sharp case lines and should be approved separately, with the estimate stating whether the case and bracelet will be cleaned, lightly refinished or left untouched.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if my watch starts running fast immediately after service?
Note the rate, date and wearing position, then contact the servicing provider before another shop opens the case. The provider can determine whether the change is covered by its service warranty or indicates a new impact or magnetic exposure.
Do service prices change between countries?
Yes. Published figures may exclude tax, shipping and customs, and local centers can apply different labor rates. Ask for the final currency, tax treatment and delivery charges on the written estimate.
