Pocket watches did not vanish when wristwatches appeared. The change took decades: wrist-worn watches were already used by women before World War I, wartime practicality broadened their appeal among men, and design improvements and changing fashion helped make them mainstream by the 1930s. Early trench watches show how the two forms overlapped, often combining a wrist strap with pocket-watch design.
Wristwatches existed before World War I
The wristwatch was not invented in the trenches. Pocket watches were conventional for men, but wrist-worn watches had earlier uses. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History notes that women in England and Europe wore small wristwatches while playing outdoor sports in the 1880s. Why soldiers adopted wrist-worn watches
In World War I, soldiers needed to check the time without freeing a hand to retrieve a watch from a pocket. The Smithsonian records that some experimented with fastening pocket watches to their sleeves or legs. Seiko Museum’s account likewise describes wrist-worn watches as easier to access in battlefield conditions and says returning soldiers carried the practice into civilian life. This practical use helped change perceptions, but it did not instantly make wristwatches universal. Manufacturers also had to persuade men that a wristwatch was appropriate. The Smithsonian describes advertising that countered the wristwatch’s feminine image, while returning veterans helped make wrist-worn timekeeping more familiar.

What a trench watch was—and how it bridged the two forms
“Trench watch” and “wristlet” are useful terms for early wristwatches associated with the wartime transition. They describe a period of adaptation, not a single invention event. Some soldiers improvised by attaching pocket watches to their clothing; manufacturers also made watches intended to be worn on the wrist.
Early examples could retain pocket-watch characteristics in their movement and exterior while adding a strap or other features for wrist wear. Seiko identifies its 1913 Laurel as Japan’s first wristwatch and notes that it shared movement and exterior features with a small pocket watch. A historical trench watch should also be distinguished from a modern reproduction. A watch’s resemblance to an early design does not establish its age or authenticity.
How wristwatches became the mainstream choice
The shift unfolded over several years, and sources describe its timing differently. The National WWII Museum says wristwatches were outselling pocket watches by substantial margins by the end of the 1920s. Seiko Museum places the production crossover in the 1930s, both in Japan and worldwide, and says wristwatches were mainstream by the middle of that decade. These are not identical measures—sales and production—and neither establishes a single precise year when pocket watches were universally replaced. Durability and confidence
Wristwatches had to withstand the conditions of daily wear. Seiko Museum credits the 1926 Rolex Oyster’s water- and dust-resistant case design with helping address concerns about vulnerability and stabilizing performance. That is Seiko Museum’s historical account, not a comparative test of the Oyster against other watches.
Fashion and social meaning
Practicality was only part of the transition. As wristwatches became more accepted among men, manufacturers promoted them as suitable accessories, and they took on meanings of fashion and status as well as utility. The change was therefore cultural and commercial as well as technical.

Why pocket watches and wristwatches overlapped
The two formats differed most in how they were worn and accessed: a pocket watch was carried in clothing and brought out to read, while a wristwatch stayed visible and could be checked with less effort. Yet early wristwatches could borrow pocket-watch movement and design features, and some wartime users simply adapted pocket watches for wrist wear. The forms merged through both improvisation and purpose-built designs, before wristwatches became the more common choice in the 1930s.
