A NATO-style strap can be a practical choice for a watch that will get wet, but the strap does not make the watch suitable for scuba diving. Whether a specific strap is appropriate depends on its materials and maker’s care guidance; whether the watch is a dive instrument depends on the watch’s own specifications and instructions. The available sources do not establish the author’s personal diving experience or a change in personal opinion, so this article focuses on those practical distinctions.
Can you scuba dive with a NATO strap?
There is no universal answer for every strap sold as “NATO.” The name alone does not establish its material, construction, hardware, water-use guidance, or suitability for a particular dive. Check the strap maker’s instructions for the specific product and the watch manufacturer’s instructions for the watch.
For example, Esprit NATO says its textile straps, excluding Perlon, are suitable for regular use in sea or pool water. That is the maker’s guidance for its own straps; it is not a claim about every NATO-style strap and does not certify a strap for scuba use. Esprit NATO’s watchmaking and care guidance also says nylon can stretch slightly when wet and advises tightening the strap by one notch before water activity.
A water-friendly strap is not a dive-watch certification
Strap water-use claims and dive-watch suitability answer different questions. A strap may tolerate water without the attached watch meeting requirements for a divers’ watch.

ISO 6425:2018 specifies requirements and test methods for divers’ watches and saturation divers’ watches. Its stated scope covers watches designed to withstand diving at depths of at least 100 m and equipped with a secured dive-time measuring system visible in darkness. ISO says the 2018 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current. The 100 m figure describes the standard’s scope; it is not a claim about typical diving depth. ISO 6425:2018 states: “This document specifies requirements and test methods for divers’ watches and for saturation divers’ watches for use in deep diving.”
Citizen says it reserves the term “diver’s watch” for watches conforming to ISO 6425 and describes requirements beyond depth rating, including readability, magnetic resistance, shock resistance, and strap strength. A water-resistant watch or a watch fitted with a water-tolerant strap is not therefore automatically a certified diver’s watch. See Citizen’s explanation of diver’s watches.

What to check before wearing one in the water
- Confirm the watch’s limits. Follow the watch maker’s water-resistance rating, care instructions, and any restrictions on using the watch underwater. Do not treat the strap’s water guidance as evidence about the watch.
- Check the exact strap. Identify its material and construction, and look for the maker’s explicit guidance about sea, pool, or other water use. Do not generalize one maker’s advice to all NATO-style straps.
- Check fit and compatibility. Match the strap width to the watch’s lug width, ensure the hardware and threading are secure, and confirm the strap is long enough for any wetsuit sleeve. Wet stretch can affect fit; Esprit NATO recommends tightening its nylon strap one notch before water activity.
- Consider the dive-time system separately. A strap does not provide or validate the secured, visible-in-darkness dive-time measuring system described in ISO 6425’s scope.
How to care for a textile strap after water exposure
Care instructions vary by maker and material. For its straps, Esprit NATO advises against machine washing, recommends air drying, and warns that salt, detergents, and fabric softeners may damage the weave. Follow the instructions for the strap you own rather than assuming all nylon or textile straps can be cleaned the same way. Esprit NATO’s care guidance covers its recommendations.
