The watch in In the Lost Lands is the Blancpain Villeret Carrousel Répétition Minutes Chronographe Flyback. Director Paul W.S. Anderson and the producers chose it for its timeless, almost magical appearance and its intricate movement, which could work both as a story relic and as a striking subject for close-up shots. The real watch appeared in key scenes; a digital recreation was built for action and extreme close-ups.
Which Blancpain watch appears in In the Lost Lands?
Blancpain identifies the film’s watch as the Villeret Carrousel Répétition Minutes Chronographe Flyback. Calling it simply a “Blancpain Villeret” can be ambiguous: Villeret is a collection, while this is a specific, highly complicated model. Blancpain’s announcement about the film gives the full name and describes its red-gold case, open-worked dial and sapphire case-back (Blancpain, 18 March 2025).
Why did the filmmakers choose it?
Anderson said producer Jeremy Bolt, a watch enthusiast, brought candidate watches to his attention. He approached the decision like casting a performer: “I cast the watch as you would cast an actor, as the best watch for the role.” What he wanted, he said, was “a timeless, magical look” that suited the film’s end-of-times setting.
The watch also had to hold up visually when the camera moved close. Anderson said its combination of timeless design and complexity made it the right fit, adding that the mechanism needed enough fine detail to work in large-screen shots. Blancpain describes the model’s carrousel, minute repeater and chronograph alongside its open-worked dial, making the movement itself part of its visual character. Anderson’s comments and the selection account were reported by Hodinkee on 13 March 2025.

In Blancpain’s announcement, Anderson put the choice this way: “The Blancpain Villeret Carrousel Répétition Minutes Chronographe Flyback was the perfect fit for the role as it perfectly combined a timeless look and complexity that we were looking for.”
How does the watch fit the film’s story?
In the film, the timepiece is more than a luxury object: it is treated as a rare and valuable relic from an older world, and it becomes central to the characters’ quest. Anderson described it as a surviving watch with mythical associations in a society that has returned to older ways of telling time. Its apparent precision and mechanical intricacy help make it feel like an artifact with meaning in that setting, rather than an incidental modern accessory.

Was the real watch used on set?
Yes. Blancpain says the physical watch was on set for several days and appeared in key scenes. For action sequences and extreme close-ups, the production used a digital recreation instead. Blancpain says creating that digital version took five months, with macro retrofits on advanced scanners used to capture the watch at maximum resolution.
The difficult part was not just reproducing the shape of the case. Blancpain notes that rain scenes required the team to recreate how light entered the dial and reflected along the movement. In Hodinkee’s interview, co-producer Dennis Berardi added that the filmmakers could not use Blancpain’s classified production drawings. Instead, they scanned an actual watch, taking more than 300 images and working through details of movement texture and lighting. Berardi also put the recreation work at about five months (Hodinkee, 13 March 2025).

What does the model’s name and complication mix mean?
The long name points to the watch’s three complications: a carrousel, a minute repeater and a chronograph with flyback function. A carrousel is a rotating mechanism that, like a tourbillon, is associated with the regulation of timekeeping; the terms describe distinct mechanisms, not interchangeable names. A minute repeater chimes the time on demand, while a chronograph measures elapsed time. Flyback lets the chronograph reset and restart in one action, rather than requiring separate stop, reset and start presses.
Time+Tide described the model as having a 45 mm red-gold case and a one-minute flying tourbillon/carrousel, in addition to the minute repeater and flyback chronograph. That publication reported a retail price of US$503,800 in March 2025; it is a dated report, not a verified current quote from Blancpain (Time+Tide, 13 March 2025).

Was Blancpain’s appearance a paid product placement?
Anderson told Hodinkee that Blancpain did not pay to place the watch and that the filmmakers retained artistic freedom. That is Anderson’s account of the arrangement; it is not independently audited contract information.
