The best-documented open-source board swap here is for the F-91W; it is not a universal upgrade, and the watch’s exact model and module must match the replacement.
What “adding smartwatch features” involves
Most retrofit projects replace the original watch module—the electronics that drive the display and timekeeping—with a new board. The case and its distinctive look may remain, but the new board’s features depend on its hardware and firmware. A replacement module is a hardware project, not an app or setting that can turn a standard vintage Casio into a connected watch.
Expect focused features rather than a full smartwatch experience. Projects in the available descriptions mention additions such as step counting, notifications, weather, timers, alarms, or music controls. They do not establish full smartwatch feature parity, and there are no standardized, independently verified battery tests for comparing the options.
Compare the practical routes
| Route | What it involves | Best suited to | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open-source board swap | Replace the original module and program new firmware. Sensor Watch documents a programmable board using a Microchip SAM L22 microcontroller, with firmware programmed over USB. Its documented target is the F-91W. Sensor Watch project | People comfortable with watch disassembly, firmware, and a constrained segment LCD. | Supported watch models, installation instructions, board availability, and the firmware features you want. |
| Independent retrofit kit | Replace the module with a kit designed to pair with a phone app. Wallpaper* describes Ollee Watch as offering step counting, timers, alarms, and app pairing. Wallpaper*’s Ollee Watch profile | People looking for a more ready-made modification for a compatible Casio case. | Current stock, exact model compatibility, app support, warranty, price, and installation details. Ollee is an independent retrofit, not an official Casio product. |
| Prototype or self-built electronics | Build or adapt a replacement module. K8MOD’s author describes a BLE and firmware prototype, while noting that the screen and electronics were not finalized. K8MOD project | Electronics developers willing to work with unfinished hardware and software. | Current project status, available schematics or code, fabrication needs, physical fit, and tested runtime. |
| Choose a Casio with built-in Bluetooth functions | Buy a watch with a module that already supports the phone feature you need. Casio’s Module 5737 guide documents phone notifications for that module. CASIO Module 5737 operating guide | People who prioritize a documented phone function over modifying a particular vintage watch. | The exact module, app compatibility, supported notification categories, and regional support. |
How to check whether a board will fit
Start with the replacement maker’s supported-model list, then identify the donor watch’s exact model and module. A shared brand or similar-looking case does not establish that a board will fit. Sensor Watch documents its board specifically as an F-91W replacement; do not assume it will fit another vintage Casio. Check Sensor Watch’s project documentation and consult the retrofit maker’s current instructions before purchasing or opening a watch. A donor F-91W by itself does not add smart functions.

What Bluetooth notifications can—and cannot—tell you
Casio’s Module 5737 guide says a paired phone can send notifications for incoming calls, mail, social-network events, schedules, and other events. It also says notification receipt can be enabled or disabled in the CASIO WATCHES app. Those instructions describe the behavior of Module 5737, not a standard F-91W or every older Casio. A vintage watch without compatible Bluetooth hardware will not gain notifications through pairing alone. Read the Module 5737 guide.

- Display and controls: Will the watch’s segment LCD and buttons support the information and interaction the new firmware offers?
- Support and availability: Are the board, app, instructions, and any relevant warranty currently available?
- Battery performance: Is there a credible runtime measurement for the exact board and configuration? The available project descriptions do not provide standardized comparative battery tests.
