To adjust a mechanical triple-calendar watch safely, first wind it and move the hands to about 6:00 a.m. (or the exact safe time in that model’s manual). Set the day, date and month with only the crown positions or pushers specified for that movement, usually placing each display one step before the target. Then advance the hands clockwise through midnight, confirm the AM/PM cycle, set the final time and close the crown correctly. Never assume that another watch’s quick-set direction or “danger zone” applies to yours.
A full or triple calendar normally needs manual correction after February and every 30-day month. A perpetual calendar is different: its programmed mechanism accounts for month lengths and leap years. The procedures below explain how to identify which system you have, avoid damaging the calendar works and recover a watch that has stopped.

What does a mechanical triple-calendar watch display?
A triple-calendar (also called a full calendar) shows three calendar indications: the day of the week, the numerical date and the month. They may appear in apertures, on sub-dials or through a combination of hands and discs. Some designs add a moon-phase display, but moon phase is a separate indication and does not make the calendar perpetual.
Why a full calendar needs intervention
Most full-calendar mechanisms know that a month has progressed from one date to the next, but they do not know whether the current month has 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. Consequently, a watch can display “31” on the morning after April, June, September, November or February. You must correct that extra date after the movement has safely entered the new month.

How a perpetual calendar differs
A perpetual calendar is programmed to account for 28-, 29-, 30- and 31-day months and leap years when it is correctly maintained. The manufacturer describes that capability for its perpetual models; it should not be inferred from the words “triple calendar” alone. If the dial or paperwork does not explicitly identify a perpetual calendar, treat the watch as a manually corrected full calendar.
How do I identify the correct controls before making an adjustment?
Read the reference number, caliber and instruction manual before turning or pressing anything. Calendar controls are movement-specific: one watch may use several crown positions, another may have individual pushers for day, date and month, and a high-complication model may require a supplied stylus.
Crown-operated calendars
A crown-operated movement normally has a winding position and one or more pulled positions. A particular position may advance the date, while another changes the day or month; the direction can also differ. Do not infer the direction from a different brand or from the direction used to set the time.
Dedicated pushers and correction tools
Some watches provide separate correctors for the day, date, month and moon phase. Press only the corrector identified in the manual for the display you intend to change. One manufacturer specifies that its correction pushers be operated with the stylus supplied with the watch. A random pin, toothpick or metal tool can damage the pusher, case or seal. If the original stylus is missing, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service center which tip and replacement are correct for that caliber.
Record the present indications
Before correcting anything, note the displayed day, date, month and time. Photographing the dial can help if you need to reverse an accidental change. Confirm whether the watch is a full calendar or perpetual calendar and locate the manual’s prohibited adjustment period.
How do I reset a mechanical calendar watch that has stopped?
Wind or restart the watch before using calendar corrections. A stopped movement may be at an unknown point in its 12-hour cycle, so setting the calendar first can leave the indications one-half day out of phase.

- Wind the movement. Follow the manual’s winding instructions. The manual for a stopped perpetual-calendar model specifically directs the owner to wind it before making settings or corrections.
- Move the hands to a safe time. Advance the hands to approximately 6:00 a.m. unless your manual gives a different safe point. This places the calendar outside the engagement period on many designs.
- Check the calendar displays. Write down what is wrong and identify which control changes each indication.
- Use only the permitted quick-set controls. Set the day, date and month to the values required by the manual, often one increment before the actual target.
- Advance clockwise through midnight. When the date changes, you have established the watch’s midnight transition. Keep turning clockwise to reach the correct hour.
- Establish AM or PM. If the target time is in the afternoon or evening, continue past 12:00 noon after the midnight change. Stopping before noon would leave the watch 12 hours out of phase.
- Set the exact time. Set the minute and hour hands, allowing for any seconds-hacking or synchronization instructions in the manual.
- Secure the crown. Push it fully home, or push it in before screwing it down if the case uses a screw-down crown.
What is the safest sequence for setting day, date and month?
The safest general sequence is: move to the model’s safe daytime setting, use the calendar controls to go one step before the desired indications, then advance the hands clockwise through midnight and set the final time. The exact order of individual quick-set operations must come from the movement manual.
1. Choose a safe starting time
About 6:00 a.m. is a conservative starting point used in several manufacturer instructions. It is not a universal law. One calendar manual allows correction between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.; another warns against correction from 5:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.; a conventional mechanical-date explanation describes the date mechanism as engaged roughly from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Use the narrowest, model-specific restriction when instructions conflict.
2. Set each indication one step before the target when required
For a crown-operated date, manufacturers commonly instruct setting the date to the day before the actual date. A full-calendar manual likewise directs the owner to place the date, month and day one increment before the true values. This lets the normal midnight change complete the calendar transition rather than forcing a quick-set mechanism to simulate it at an unsafe point.
For example, if the correct display is Tuesday 18 March, set the permitted controls to Monday 17 March (and the preceding month or month value specified by the manual if the month disc also needs advancing). Do not invent a sequence for a movement whose instructions use a different order.
3. Advance clockwise through midnight
Turn the hands clockwise until the date and associated calendar indications change. That transition identifies midnight. Continue clockwise to the desired hour; for a p.m. time, pass 12:00 noon after the midnight change. Advancing in the reverse direction can be prohibited or can produce a different result, so follow the caliber instructions.
4. Finish and close the crown
Set the minutes precisely, then return the crown to its running position. A screw-down crown must be pushed in before its threads are engaged. If the crown will not seat smoothly, stop rather than forcing it; cross-threading can compromise water resistance and damage the case.

When is the calendar quick-set function dangerous?
The danger window exists because calendar parts are partially engaged while the movement is preparing the next date. Forcing a quick-set corrector during that period can bend, shear or misalign the calendar components.
| Published instruction | Prohibited or permitted period | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Trematic calendar warning | Do not use quick-set date between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. | Move the hands outside that interval before date correction. |
| Trematic second warning | Do not set the calendar between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. | Use the broader 12-hour restriction for that watch. |
| Patek Philippe perpetual-calendar manual | Avoid all calendar or moon-phase adjustments from 5:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. | Set the watch to 6:00 a.m. before correcting and verify the day/night indication. |
| NOMOS mechanical-date explanation | Date parts mesh approximately from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. | Treat this as a mechanism explanation, not as permission to override the specific manual. |
These intervals differ because calendar constructions and the timing of their changeover differ. If you do not have the manual, moving the hands to about 6:00 a.m. before any quick-set operation is safer than guessing, but obtaining the correct instructions should be your next step.
Why does my watch change the date at noon instead of midnight?
A noon date change means the watch is 12 hours out of phase: its calendar is performing the midnight transition during the daytime half of the cycle. The date mechanism itself may be functioning normally.
- Move the hands clockwise until the date changes. That point is the watch’s actual midnight.
- Continue past 12:00 noon to determine the afternoon half of the cycle.
- Set the desired time only after you have established whether the correct time is a.m. or p.m.
Seiko’s setting guidance describes the same symptom: if AM/PM is not set correctly, the date changes around 12 o’clock noon. Do not correct a noon change by repeatedly quick-setting the date; correct the 12-hour hand position through the midnight procedure.
How do I correct February and 30-day months?
A standard full calendar cannot automatically remove the nonexistent 31st day. After February or a 30-day month, let the watch advance into the first day of the next month, then use the permitted date correction to change “31” to “1” (or to the actual date shown by the calendar).
February
After February, a full calendar may show 29, 30 or 31 depending on the prior setting and the year. Once the movement is safely outside its correction lock period and the month display has reached March, set the date to 1 with the date control specified by the manual. A non-perpetual calendar does not know whether February had 28 or 29 days.

April, June, September and November
These months have 30 days. On the first day of May, July, October or December, correct an extra “31” to “1.” Perform the correction only after the watch has completed its normal changeover and the hands are in the safe range. If the calendar is already several days behind, use the previous-day and clockwise-midnight method rather than pressing a quick-set control while the mechanism is engaged.
What should I do if a day, date or month pusher is stuck?
Stop pressing a resistant control. A stuck or misaligned calendar can indicate a damaged corrector, a displaced jumper, dried lubrication or a calendar that was operated during its engagement period.
- Return the hands to approximately 6:00 a.m. only if they move normally and the manual allows hand-setting.
- Do not apply pliers, lubricant, a sharp pin or extra force to a pusher or crown.
- Check that the crown is fully in its intended position; a half-pulled crown can make a correction appear ineffective.
- If an indication advances by two steps, jams between markers or no longer aligns with midnight, stop using quick-set functions.
- Have the watch inspected by the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker familiar with that caliber.
A service center can determine whether the calendar needs adjustment, replacement parts or a complete service. Repeated attempts to force a correction can turn a minor alignment problem into a broader movement repair.
How often should a mechanical triple-calendar watch be serviced?
Service intervals depend on the movement, lubrication, use and the manufacturer’s policy. Trematic recommends service every four to five years and directs owners to the manufacturer or an authorized service partner. That interval is a recommendation for the cited watches, not a universal schedule for every triple calendar.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What specifications can I expect from a mechanical triple-calendar movement?
Specifications vary by caliber and should not be generalized. Trematic lists a 43-hour power reserve, 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and 21 jewels for its cited triple-calendar example using ETA 2846 and Dubois Dépraz 9201 movements. Patek Philippe lists at least a 55-hour power reserve for Reference 5204/1. These are manufacturer specifications for those examples, with no publication year stated in the available material.

How can I choose between a full calendar and a perpetual calendar?
The practical difference is how much correction the owner must perform. A full calendar offers the day, date and month but requires a short-month adjustment. A perpetual calendar handles month lengths and leap years automatically when maintained correctly, but it generally has more complex controls and stricter correction instructions.
| Decision point | Full/triple calendar | Perpetual calendar |
|---|---|---|
| Month-length handling | Manual correction after February and 30-day months. | Programmed for 28, 29, 30 and 31 days and leap years. |
| Controls | Crown positions, individual pushers or both. | Often several correctors, sometimes operated with a supplied stylus. |
| Danger window | Varies by movement; follow the manual. | Varies by movement; high-complication manuals can set narrower restrictions. |
| Recovery after stopping | Usually requires re-establishing the calendar and AM/PM cycle. | May require additional calendar and leap-year corrections specified by the manufacturer. |
| Service considerations | Use a watchmaker familiar with the caliber. | Complex programming and correctors make manufacturer or specialist service especially important. |
What is the safest quick-reference checklist?
Keep this checklist with the watch’s manual:
- Identify the exact reference and caliber.
- Confirm whether it is full/triple or perpetual.
- Wind a stopped watch before correction.
- Move the hands to about 6:00 a.m., or the model’s stated safe time.
- Use only the documented crown position, pusher and tool.
- Set the calendar one step before the target when the manual requires it.
- Advance clockwise through midnight and, for a p.m. target, past noon.
- Correct an extra 31 after February or a 30-day month only when the mechanism is outside its lock period.
- Push the crown home before screwing it down.
- Stop and seek qualified service if a control resists, jams or misaligns.
Does every triple-calendar watch use the same crown direction?
No. Crown direction, crown positions and the displays affected by each position depend on the caliber. The only reliable direction is the one printed in that watch’s manual; copying a setting method from another model can advance the wrong display or damage the calendar.

Use the tool specified by the manufacturer. Some manuals call for a supplied stylus with a particular tip, and an improvised metal pin can scratch the case, deform the pusher or damage its seal. If the stylus is missing, obtain confirmation of the correct replacement from the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
What happens if my full calendar stops for several days?
The movement loses both time and calendar position. Wind it, move the hands to the safe setting, then rebuild the indications through the documented previous-day and clockwise-midnight procedure. A full calendar may also need a short-month correction if the stoppage spans the end of February or a 30-day month.
Is a moon-phase display adjusted with the calendar?
Not necessarily. Moon phase can have its own corrector and its own restrictions, even when it shares a case with day, date and month indications. Treat it as a separate adjustment and follow the movement manual; never assume that pressing the date or month control will set the moon phase.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether my watch is a full calendar or a perpetual calendar?
Look for the exact wording on the dial, caseback, warranty card or caliber documentation. “Triple” or “full” calendar means day, date and month displays but does not by itself promise leap-year or short-month automation; the manual must explicitly identify a perpetual calendar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat if I set the date during the prohibited hours and the watch still works?
Do not assume there is no damage. Calendar parts can be bent or displaced without stopping the movement immediately; monitor alignment and corrector resistance, and have the watch inspected if the changeover becomes irregular.
Should I set the calendar forward or backward to recover a wrong date?
Use the direction and sequence stated for the caliber. Many instructions rely on setting one day before the target and advancing clockwise through midnight, while reverse hand-setting or reverse quick-setting may be restricted.
Why does my month display lag behind the date after a short month?
A full calendar may require separate month and date corrections, and the month disc may change on a different controlled step. Move the hands to the safe setting and follow the manual’s individual correction sequence instead of forcing both indications together.
