How to Care for a Ceramic Dive Watch and Avoid Chips or Scratches

Ceramic resists scratches but can still chip from a hard impact. Learn how to clean a ceramic dive watch safely, tell a transferred mark from a chip, and check water resistance first.

Ceramic resists ordinary scratches well, but it is not immune to hard impacts. The practical approach is to protect the case and bezel from knocks, clean the watch only in the way the maker of your exact model allows, and confirm water resistance before any water touches it. Chips and scratches have different causes, so they need different responses.

Scratch resistance is not impact protection

Ceramic is hard, and that hardness is why it tends to keep its surface looking clean through everyday wear. Hardness does not make it brittle-proof. Citizen Watch Global states in its ceramic-case handling guidance: “However, it may get broken or chipped when it is applied strong shock such as hitting with a hard thing or falling to hard floor.” (Citizen Watch Global, ceramic case handling)

The most useful habit that follows from this is to avoid hard knocks and drops. Pay particular attention to exposed edges, such as the lugs, the bezel edge, and the crystal rim, when you set the watch down on a hard surface or pass it near door frames and metal fittings. Treat this as a way to reduce risk. No maker guarantees that a chip can always be prevented.

Brand claims about ceramic are also model-specific. Rolex describes the Cerachrom bezel insert on its Submariner Date reference 126618LN as “virtually scratchproof”, while the same product page describes the bezel as exposed to shocks, scratches, and environmental factors. (Rolex, Submariner Date 126618LN) That statement applies to that insert on that model. It does not mean every ceramic dive watch, bracelet, or bezel is equally resistant, and it is not a promise against impact damage.

Is the mark a scratch, a transfer, or a chip?

Many marks that look like scratches on a ceramic watch are actually deposits from another material. CHANEL notes that “contact with other materials that are softer than ceramic, such as 18K gold or titanium, can leave deposits resembling scratches.” (CHANEL, watch care instructions) This is a useful explanation for a mark that appears after contact with metal, such as a bracelet link rubbing the case or a gold or titanium component touching the bezel. It is not a diagnosis of every mark, so appearance alone is not enough to decide what you are looking at.

  • Transferred material: a deposit from a softer metal that sits on the surface. It is a surface condition, and the maker’s cleaning guidance is the correct starting point.
  • Surface scratch: a line cut into the surface. Ceramic is designed to resist this in ordinary use, so a visible scratch is worth raising with the maker rather than treating it with abrasives.
  • Chip or fracture: physical loss of material, usually from a hard impact. This is damage, not dirt, and it calls for a service assessment.

If you cannot tell which of these you are seeing, do not try to rub the mark away. Clean gently as your maker allows, and if the mark remains or looks like missing material, have an official service center or authorized retailer examine it.

Cleaning instructions depend on the maker

The manufacturer sources reviewed for this article do not agree on cleaning methods. Use the table below to see how the differences play out, then follow the instructions for your own watch.

Maker and source Scope of guidance Stated cleaning method Soap, detergent, or immersion
CHANEL, watch care instructions Ceramic bracelet Soapy water and a soft-bristle brush, thorough rinsing, then a soft cloth to dry Soapy water is part of the stated method for the bracelet
TAG Heuer, general watch-cleaning FAQ General watch cleaning, not specific to ceramic For light dirt, a microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush slightly moistened with warm water Avoid soap, detergents, and immersion
Patek Philippe, watch care recommendations Water resistance Not stated in the source reviewed; owners are directed to the relevant user guide Not stated in the source reviewed; confirm water resistance in the user guide first
Seiko, care and maintenance FAQ Water resistance Not stated in the source reviewed Not stated in the source reviewed; water resistance is described as not permanently guaranteed

The conflict between CHANEL and TAG Heuer is the clearest example. One allows soapy water on a ceramic bracelet, and the other advises against soap in its general guidance. Do not combine these methods or assume either applies to an unidentified watch. The reference that matters is the manual or care page for your exact model, including whether it covers the case, the bracelet, or the bezel insert separately.

A safe routine for light cleaning

  1. Open the manual or the maker’s care page for your exact model and note whether water cleaning is permitted at all. If it is not, stop here and use only the dry methods it describes.
  2. Check the water-resistance rating and the condition of the watch before any water contact. The steps in the section below apply first.
  3. For light surface dirt, where your maker’s guidance allows it, use a soft microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush slightly moistened with warm water. A microfiber cloth is a simple tool for dust and fingerprints. It does not prevent chips.
  4. If your maker’s guidance for a ceramic bracelet includes soapy water, use a soft-bristle brush with the soapy water, then rinse thoroughly so no soap residue stays in the links.
  5. Dry the watch with a soft cloth. Do not use compressed air, heat, or abrasive material to speed the process unless your maker’s guidance specifically permits it.

Check water resistance before any water contact

A ceramic case does not change how water resistance works. The seals and the case construction do. Seiko states that “the water resistance of a watch is not permanently guaranteed”, and it warns that seals can age and that deformation after an accidental shock can affect water resistance. It recommends regular checks. (Seiko, care and maintenance FAQ) Patek Philippe similarly directs owners to the relevant user guide to confirm water resistance before water is used. (Patek Philippe, watch care recommendations)

  • Confirm the rated water resistance for your model in its manual.
  • Set the crown as the manual specifies before any water contact.
  • Consider the watch’s age and whether the seals have been serviced.
  • If the watch has taken a hard knock, do not test it by immersion.
  • If the rating or condition is uncertain, ask an official service center or authorized retailer for model-specific advice before rinsing or swimming.

Methods to avoid

None of the manufacturer sources reviewed establish the following as suitable consumer treatments for an unidentified ceramic dive watch, so do not use them to fix or prevent damage:

  • Polishing compounds or aggressive polishing
  • Abrasive pads or scouring materials
  • Ultrasonic cleaners
  • Ceramic coatings sold as a fix or as protection
  • Soap, detergents, or immersion, where the maker’s general guidance advises against them, as TAG Heuer’s does

Polishing and abrasives are a particular risk because they can change the surface of a watch that the maker has not designed for that treatment, and they cannot repair a chip.

When a chip or uncertain water resistance calls for service

A visible chip, a hard impact, or any doubt about water resistance is a reason to stop the home routine and contact an official service center or authorized retailer. That route can confirm whether the damage is a surface deposit, a scratch, or a fracture, and whether the watch’s seals still meet its rating. Service timing and costs vary by maker and region, and they are not covered here.
