A ceramic dive watch is exceptionally resistant to everyday abrasion, but it is not immune to impact. The best care routine is simple: secure the crown and pushers, rinse away salt or chlorine with fresh water, dry with a soft lint-free cloth, and keep the watch away from hard knocks. A gray or metallic streak may be material transferred from another object rather than a scratch in the ceramic. Never scrape or polish it with an abrasive. If the watch suffers a hard impact, develops a chip, crack, loose bezel, or condensation, stop using it in water and have an authorized service center inspect and pressure-test it.
Why can ceramic resist scratches yet still chip?
Watch ceramic is engineered to resist ordinary surface abrasion. Chanel describes its ceramic as “a stainless material designed to be scratch-resistant.” That does not make a ceramic case or bezel impact-proof. A sharp blow against tile, rock, a tool, or another hard edge can create a chip, crack, or fracture even when routine contact leaves no visible mark.

The distinction is important because abrasion and impact fail differently:
- Abrasion: repeated rubbing from everyday contact is unlikely to cut a properly finished ceramic surface.
- Impact: concentrated force from a drop or collision can exceed the material’s ability to absorb the shock, especially at an edge or corner.
- Transfer: a softer metal can leave a visible streak on ceramic without cutting it. Chanel specifically notes that gold or titanium can deposit material that resembles a scratch. Panerai likewise warns that severe contact can leave traces from the other material.
Seiko’s care guidance warns that strong shocks and drops onto hard surfaces can damage a watch. Treat a ceramic bezel as highly abrasion-resistant, not unbreakable.

How do I clean a ceramic dive watch after swimming?
Rinse the watch with clean, fresh water after seawater or pool exposure, then dry it gently. Salt crystals, chlorine, sand, and grit can remain around the case, bracelet, crown, and the underside of a rotating bezel even when the ceramic itself is unaffected.
- Secure the controls first. Push the crown fully home or screw it down as the model requires. Ensure every screw-down pusher is closed. Seiko warns against washing with the crown pulled out, and Chanel likewise requires the crown to be fully pushed or screwed in.
- Rinse with fresh water. Use the rinsing method specified in the watch’s manual. Panerai specifically advises rinsing beneath a rotating bezel so salt and grit do not remain in the track. Chanel also calls for rinsing after sea or pool use.
- Do not use a high-pressure stream. Seiko cautions that faucet pressure can force moisture past seals. Avoid a jet nozzle, pressure washer, or directing a strong stream straight at the crown, pushers, crystal, or bezel gap.
- Dry without rubbing grit across the finish. Shake off excess water gently and use a clean microfiber or other lint-free soft cloth. TAG Heuer recommends microfiber; Chanel specifies a soft cloth. If sand is present, rinse it away before wiping so particles do not act as abrasives.
- Use soap only when the brand permits it. Cleaning instructions differ by model and by component. Follow the manufacturer’s exact directions rather than assuming a dive rating makes every wet-cleaning method safe.
Do not use bleach, solvents, metal polish, abrasive pads, powdered cleaners, or unapproved chemical products. Seiko warns that solvents and chemicals can deteriorate the case, bracelet, or strap. Never open the case to clean it yourself.

How can I tell a real ceramic scratch from a metal transfer?
A gray, black, or shiny line is not automatically damage to the ceramic. A softer object such as gold or titanium can leave a deposit on top of the ceramic, producing a mark that looks like a gouge.
Use a low-risk inspection
- Rinse the area with fresh water to remove loose salt, dust, and grit.
- Wipe once with a clean, soft microfiber cloth using light pressure.
- Inspect the mark under neutral light. A deposit may fade or disappear; a chip will show a missing edge, a sharp break, or an irregular depression.
- Stop if the line remains, feels sharp, or is accompanied by a crack, loose bezel, or displaced insert. Do not test it with a fingernail, blade, pin, or abrasive compound.
If gentle cleaning does not remove the streak, an authorized service center can identify whether it is transferred material, a surface defect, or actual ceramic damage. A professional inspection is especially important before the watch returns to the water.
What habits prevent chips and impact damage?
Most preventable ceramic failures come from impact rather than normal rubbing. Change how you wear, store, and transport the watch when hard contact is likely.

Remove it for impact-prone activities
Take the watch off before working around tools, masonry, tile, railings, rocks, or equipment that can strike the case. Seiko’s general guidance to avoid strong shocks applies even when the bezel is ceramic. A drop onto a hard floor can damage the ceramic, crystal, crown, or movement in one event.

Do not toss the watch into a drawer or travel case with metal bracelets, keys, buckles, or other watches. Store it in an individual soft-lined compartment so it cannot hit another hard object while being moved. Ceramic may tolerate rubbing better than steel, but an edge-to-edge collision can still chip it.
Protect vulnerable edges
Bezel corners, insert edges, and lugs are more exposed to a concentrated strike than a broad flat surface. Avoid resting the watch on a hard rim or sliding it across stone, concrete, or unpadded metal. If a bezel becomes loose or its insert shifts after contact, stop using the watch underwater until it is inspected.
Do not reshape or polish ceramic at home
Home sanding, polishing, or grinding can change the bezel profile, remove a finish, and spread damage beyond the original mark. A transfer can sometimes be wiped away; a chip or crack generally requires inspection and may require replacement of the affected part.
How do I preserve a ceramic dive watch’s water resistance?
Water resistance depends on gaskets, the crown and pusher seals, the crystal, and correct case assembly. It is not a permanent characteristic. IWC explains that seals age and that external shocks can affect water resistance, so a watch that was water-resistant when new may not remain so without inspection and service.

Before entering water
- Confirm that the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down.
- Close every screw-down pusher and check that no control is left in an intermediate position.
- Do not operate the crown or pushers underwater unless the specific diver model explicitly permits that operation.
- Do not enter the water if the crystal, crown, bezel, or case shows impact damage.
After exposure
Rinse off salt or chlorine with fresh water using the model’s approved method, dry the watch, and let it return to room temperature before storage. Salt and chlorine residue can attack components and leave abrasive crystals around moving parts even when no immediate problem is visible.
Follow the manufacturer’s testing schedule
There is no single interval that applies to every ceramic dive watch. The published recommendations below differ by manufacturer and are not interchangeable:
| Manufacturer | Published guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Chanel | Water-resistance service every five years | Chanel also recommends an annual check after prolonged saltwater or chlorine exposure. |
| IWC Schaffhausen | Water-resistance testing at least annually | Testing should be performed by an authorized agent; IWC links aging seals and shocks to loss of resistance. |
| TAG Heuer | Water-resistance testing every two years | Recommendation in its 2025 instruction manual for watches worn in water. |
| TAG Heuer | Full overhaul every five to six years | Usual interval in the 2025 instruction manual for mechanical and quartz watches. |
Use the schedule for your exact brand and model, taking account of seal age, service history, and how often the watch is exposed to water. A pressure test is also appropriate after a significant impact, case opening, crown replacement, or other work that could disturb the seals.
What should I do after a chip, crack, or hard impact?
Stop diving and keep the watch out of water until an authorized service center has checked it. Impact can damage seals or the case even when the defect is too small to see, and a loose bezel or cracked insert can admit water.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRemove the watch from service immediately if you see:
- A chip, crack, or missing section of ceramic
- A loose, lifted, or displaced bezel or insert
- Damage to the crown, crown guards, pushers, crystal, or case edge
- Condensation, mist, or droplets under the crystal
- A failed pressure test or any unexplained loss of water resistance
Chanel states that mist under the crystal indicates water infiltration requiring complete servicing. IWC also connects shocks and aging seals with water-resistance failure. Do not try to dry a fogged watch with heat, open the case, or continue wearing it while waiting for service; moisture can corrode the movement.

What an authorized center should assess
Tell the service center when the impact occurred, whether the watch was submerged afterward, and whether the bezel, crown, or crystal changed position. The technician can examine the ceramic and surrounding parts, replace damaged components, renew gaskets where required, and perform a pressure test before declaring the watch safe for diving.
Can I polish a mark off a ceramic bezel?
Do not polish a ceramic bezel at home. Abrasive compounds, polishing wheels, files, and sandpaper can remove printed markings, alter the geometry of the insert, round an edge, or turn a removable transfer into permanent surface damage.
First use only the gentle rinse-and-cloth routine described above. If the mark remains, have an authorized service center determine whether it is deposited material or a true scratch. Ceramic that is chipped or cracked is not restored safely by casual polishing; the center may need to replace the bezel or insert with the correct part.

The safest default is a clean, soft microfiber or lint-free cloth and fresh water applied according to the model’s instructions. Keep a dedicated cloth for the watch so embedded grit from other surfaces is not transferred to the ceramic.
- Preferred: fresh water for rinsing and a clean microfiber or similarly soft lint-free cloth for drying.
- Conditional: mild soapy water or a soft brush only where the manufacturer expressly allows it and gives a method for that component.
- Avoid: solvents, bleach, abrasive pads, metal polish, powdered cleaners, blades, pins, and high-pressure water.
Different brands can give different instructions even for watches with similar water-resistance ratings. TAG Heuer’s procedure warns that soap particles can remain in small spaces and says not to immerse the watch during its cleaning method, while other brand guidance may permit limited soapy cleaning of a ceramic bracelet. The model manual takes priority.

What should I compare when buying a ceramic dive watch?
“Ceramic” describes a material family, not one universal construction. Before buying, compare how the ceramic is used and how the watch can be serviced rather than treating the label as a guarantee against damage.
| Comparison point | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Ceramic formulation and construction | Different formulations, thicknesses, and backing structures can change impact tolerance and replacement options. |
| Bezel and insert design | An insert that can be replaced separately may be easier to service than a one-piece component, but the manufacturer’s parts policy controls availability. |
| Crown and crystal protection | Guards, screw-down systems, and crystal design influence how exposed the watch is to knocks and how seals are maintained. |
| Stated water-resistance rating | The rating describes the manufacturer’s specification under defined conditions; it does not make aged seals or impact damage safe. |
| Testing or certification information | Published testing details help you understand the intended use, but they do not replace periodic inspection. |
| Authorized service coverage | Confirm that an authorized center can pressure-test the model and obtain replacement ceramic, bezel, crystal, and gasket parts in your region. |
The practical trade-off is strong abrasion resistance versus lower tolerance for sharp impact and potentially more specialized repair. A ceramic component should never be presented as unbreakable.
How should a long-term care schedule look?
Build care around exposure and condition rather than a generic calendar alone.
- After every swim: secure the controls, rinse with fresh water, and dry with a soft cloth.
- After visible grit or sand: rinse before wiping and pay attention to the rotating-bezel area.
- After a hard knock: stop water use and arrange an authorized inspection and pressure test.
- After prolonged saltwater or chlorine exposure: follow the brand’s additional check recommendation; Chanel calls for an annual check in this situation.
- At the model’s stated interval: have water resistance tested and seals serviced by an authorized agent.
- At overhaul time: follow the manufacturer’s full-service interval; TAG Heuer’s 2025 manual lists five to six years for its mechanical and quartz watches.
Keep records of pressure tests, gasket replacement, impacts, and any bezel or crown work. Service history helps a technician judge seal age and helps you avoid treating an old water-resistance rating as a current guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a ceramic bracelet be cleaned with soap and a brush?
Only if the brand’s instructions allow it for that bracelet. Chanel permits soapy water and a soft-bristle brush for ceramic bracelets, while TAG Heuer’s cleaning procedure warns about soap particles in small spaces and says not to immerse the watch; follow the exact model manual.
Are all ceramic bezels equally resistant to impact?
No. Ceramic formulation, thickness, backing, bezel architecture, and edge protection vary by model. Compare the manufacturer’s construction details and the availability of replacement parts instead of assuming that every ceramic insert has the same failure resistance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What information should I give the service center after an accident?
Report the time and type of impact, the surface involved, whether the watch entered water afterward, and any change in the bezel, crown, crystal, or timekeeping. Mention condensation or a failed pressure test, even if the symptom disappeared before the appointment.
Does a brief flash of mist under the crystal matter?
Yes. Even temporary mist can indicate water infiltration, not harmless atmospheric change. Keep the watch out of water and have an authorized center inspect and service it before use.
