A sapphire crystal resists scratches far better than ordinary mineral glass, but it is not immune to damage. The safe routine is to wipe the crystal with a clean, soft microfiber cloth using light pressure, and to skip any cleaning method the watch’s own manual does not clearly allow. That matters most for water, soap, solvents, and abrasive polish.
What sapphire protects against, and what it does not
Casio places sapphire at 9 on the Mohs hardness scale in its European sapphire-crystal watch guidance, which is a measure of how hard the material is. It is not a promise that the crystal will never mark. The same Casio page states plainly: “Sapphire watch glass is extremely scratch-resistant and shatterproof – but not unbreakable.” The text is attributed to Britta Rehme, described as a watch expert, and the page does not show a separate publication date. You can read it at Casio Europe’s sapphire-crystal watches page.
In practice, this means a sapphire crystal will usually outlast the surface wear that scars acrylic or mineral glass, while a hard knock can still chip or crack it. Sapphire is also not the only layer that matters. Many sapphire crystals carry an anti-reflective coating on the underside or top surface, and a mark you see may sit on that coating rather than in the sapphire itself. That distinction changes how you should respond, as explained below.
Routine cleaning with a microfiber cloth
For fingerprints, skin oil, and light dust, a dry cleaning routine is the safest default. It is the one approach that the manufacturer guidance reviewed here consistently supports for the crystal.

- Check the manual first. Look for the water-resistance section and any instructions about the crown or pushers. If the manual says nothing about wet cleaning, treat the watch as dry-clean only.
- Inspect the cloth. Use a clean, soft microfiber or lint-free cloth. Shake it out and make sure no sand, metal filings, or grit is caught in the weave. A cloth carrying grit works like sandpaper on any crystal.
- Wipe gently. Use light pressure and a single gentle motion across the crystal. Fingerprints and loose dust should lift without force. Do not press down, and do not scrub.
- Stop if you feel grit. If you sense a particle under the cloth, shake it out or switch to a clean section of cloth before continuing.
- Stop if marks remain. Persistent marks are not a reason to use stronger cleaning. Move to the coating and service sections below.
When water or liquid is involved
Wet cleaning is where manufacturer advice diverges most, so the watch’s own instructions must control. Do not assume that a sapphire crystal means the watch can be rinsed or soaked.
TAG Heuer: slightly moistened cloth or brush, no soap
TAG Heuer’s customer FAQ recommends: “Use a microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush slightly moistened with warm water to remove dust and light surface dirt from the case and metal bracelet.” The same guidance discourages soap and detergents because they can leave residue in joints and between links. No individual speaker is named on the FAQ page, which is available at TAG Heuer’s How should I clean my watch? FAQ.
CENTURY: soapy water permitted, with precautions
CENTURY allows soapy water for its watches, but its guidance includes precautions about the crown, the pushers, and the water-resistance rating. Soapy water is therefore a manufacturer-specific option, not a general one.

Seiko: avoid running water
Seiko warns against cleaning a watch directly under faucet water and states that water resistance is not permanent. Gaskets age, and a watch that was sealed when new may not be sealed now. A sapphire crystal does not change that.
Method comparison
| Method | Appropriate use | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Clean microfiber or lint-free cloth, dry | Routine fingerprints and light surface dust | The cloth must be free of grit; use light pressure |
| Slightly damp cloth or soft brush | Only where the exact watch instructions permit it (TAG Heuer lists this for the case and metal bracelet) | Water resistance, crown position, strap material, and residue all vary by model |
| Soapy water | CENTURY allows it for its watches under its stated precautions | Not universal; TAG Heuer advises against soap and detergents for its cleaning method |
| Abrasive polish or harsh chemical | Not supported for routine sapphire care in the manufacturer guidance reviewed | Can damage the coating, case, seals, or finish; seek service for suspected damage |
Marks may be on the coating, not the crystal
Maurice Lacroix’s 2025 standard manual states that everyday wear can leave marks on the anti-reflective treatment. This is an important distinction. A mark on the coating is a different problem from a scratch in the sapphire, and both are different from a crack.
Do not try to polish a suspected scratch at home. Abrasive compounds are designed to remove material, and on an anti-reflective coating they can remove the coating along with the mark. If a mark persists after gentle dry cleaning, a watch service provider can determine whether the damage is on the coating or in the crystal and what can be done.

Damage that needs a service center
Mondaine advises immediate replacement of a cracked, chipped, or loose crystal, because damage of this kind can cause water-resistance or fogging problems. Replacement is a job for the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker, not a home task.
- Stop wetting or submerging the watch until it is inspected, since the seal may no longer be intact.
- Do not attempt to press, glue, or polish a crystal yourself.
- Ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider to check the crystal, gasket, and case seal together, because a crystal problem can affect all three.
Everyday habits that reduce contact
When the watch is off your wrist, keep it separate from keys, rings, coins, and other watches. A soft storage pouch or a padded compartment limits contact with harder objects, which is the most direct way to protect the crystal between wears.
