For everyday care, wipe away sweat and dirt, keep the crown closed and dry, and follow the instructions for your exact model and caliber. A diver’s water resistance can deteriorate over time, so do not assume an older or previously tested watch is still safe for water use.
What to do after wearing your watch
After everyday wear
Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe away moisture, sweat, and dirt. You do not need a special branded cleaning cloth; a clean, soft cloth is sufficient for routine wiping and drying.
After swimming in the sea
- Keep the crown in its normal closed position. Do not rinse the watch or operate the crown while it is pulled out, and do not turn or pull out a wet crown.
- Rinse the watch in still fresh water, such as water in a sink or container. Seiko advises against holding it directly under running faucet water.
- Dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth.

What to avoid
- Baths and saunas: Do not wear the watch while bathing or in a sauna. Steam, soap, and some hot-spring components may speed up deterioration of water resistance.
- Solvents and cleaning chemicals: Avoid benzine, thinner, bleach, and similar products; they may damage or discolor the watch or its band.
- Strong shocks: Avoid impacts. A shock can deform parts and affect water resistance, even if the watch appears to work normally afterward.
- Wet crown operation: Do not turn or pull out the crown when the watch is wet, or wash the watch with the crown pulled out.

Check the exact water-resistance rating before using it in water
Use the marking on your individual watch and its model instructions to determine what water activities are permitted. Seiko distinguishes ordinary water resistance from categories such as “Diver’s Watch 200 meters” and “Professional Diver’s Watch 1,000 meters”; these labels are not interchangeable. The rating is not a promise that the watch will remain water-resistant indefinitely: Seiko says gaskets age and accidental shocks can deform components, and that water resistance is not permanently guaranteed.
Specifications also vary across Prospex models. For example, Seiko lists 200 m / 660 ft diver’s water resistance, a screw-down crown, and a screw case back for the SPB079J1. Those details should not be assumed for another Prospex diver. Check the case marking and find the manual that matches your watch’s caliber through Seiko’s instruction library.

When to arrange a water-resistance check or service
Arrange a professional water-resistance check periodically, and after a strong shock or suspected damage. Persistent condensation inside the crystal is a reason to seek professional attention rather than rely on the watch’s former rating.
Seiko’s general customer-service guidance recommends service about every three years at an Authorized Seiko Service Center, with frequency depending on climate and the owner’s care. Seiko describes service as inspection and repair or replacement of worn parts, cleaning and lubrication, and checking water resistance. That general interval is not universal: the 5K65 diver’s watch manual recommends an overhaul every three or four years. Follow the manual for your exact caliber and Seiko’s service guidance rather than applying one interval to every Prospex diver.
