To change an Apple Watch band, place the watch face down on a clean, soft surface, hold the band-release button on the back, and slide the old band sideways out. Orient the replacement with its text facing you and slide it in until you feel and hear a click. Check that it is seated and does not slide freely; do not wear the watch if the band is sliding.
Before you start: check band compatibility
Apple Watch bands are compatible by case-size family, but the band’s style and specific model can impose additional restrictions. Check both the case size shown for your watch and the replacement band’s product listing before buying.

For Apple Watch Ultra, Apple says 49mm Ocean, Alpine, and Trail bands are designed for Ultra and later for rugged activities; Ultra is also compatible with 44mm, 45mm, and 46mm bands for casual, everyday use. Apple advises trying a Solo Loop or Braided Solo Loop with Ultra before purchase because a smaller size may be needed. Band style and model can add restrictions, so check the exact listing. How to change a standard Apple Watch band
- Put the watch on a soft, clean surface. Remove it from your wrist and place it face down on a clean microfiber cloth or another soft, padded surface.
- Find the band-release button. Locate the small button on the back of the watch beside the band connector. Bands slide sideways out of the channel; they do not lift straight up.
- Press and hold the release button. Keep it held down while sliding the old band sideways. If the band sticks, press and hold the button again. Never force it.
- Remove the other half, if necessary. For a two-piece band, repeat the process for the second half.
- Orient the replacement band. Make sure its text faces you and line up the connector with the watch’s band channel. Do not force a connector that does not align.
- Slide the band in until it clicks. Push it into the channel until you feel and hear a click, then center it so it is fully seated.
- Test the lock before wearing the watch. Without pressing the release button, gently pull the band sideways. If it slides freely, remove and reinstall it. Do not wear the watch if the band is sliding.

Special instructions for Apple Watch band styles
Link Bracelet
Separate a Link Bracelet into two pieces before removing it from the watch:
- Close the butterfly closure if it is open.
- Press a quick-release button on the inside of a link.
- Gently pull the links apart.
- Remove each piece from the watch using the standard band-release button.
Do not force or twist the bracelet. Its quick-release buttons separate the links; the button on the back of the watch releases the bracelet from the watch case.
Solo Loop and Braided Solo Loop
To put one on or take it off your wrist, pull from the bottom of the band to stretch it over your wrist. This wrist-fitting step is separate from removing the band from the watch slot. Apple recommends a comfortable, snug fit and notes that a Solo Loop may increase in length over time.

Milanese Loop
Apple changed the Milanese Loop design in 2018 so the magnetic closure on the redesigned version can slide through the connector. Earlier models do not slide through the connector in this way. Do not force the closure through; identify which version you have before separating it from the watch.
Ocean, Alpine, and Trail Loop
These bands use the standard watch-side release mechanism. For 49mm versions, Apple’s guidance is to keep the lug parallel with the case and insert it gently with the metal tooth facing down. Press and hold the release button to remove a band, then slide the replacement into place until it clicks and check that it is secure.
Modern Buckle and Titanium Milanese Loop
Apple provides separate adjustment guidance for these styles. Follow the instructions for your specific band to adjust its closure; the standard watch-side removal and installation process still applies. Do not force a band or closure into place.

How the band should fit after the change
Wear the watch snugly but comfortably, with the back maintaining contact with your skin. Apple recommends positioning it above the wrist bone, toward the elbow, rather than directly on the hand.

- The watch should not move loosely around your wrist.
- The back should remain in contact with your skin without uncomfortable pressure.
- The band should stay locked when gently pulled without pressing the release button.
- If the band is unsecured, remove the watch rather than risking a fall.
A poor fit can affect comfort and sensor contact. A band that is not mechanically locked is a separate problem: do not rely on a snug wrist fit to compensate for a connector that slides out.
Troubleshooting
The old band will not come out
Press and hold the release button, then slide the band sideways. If it sticks, press and hold the button again. Keep the watch supported on a soft surface; do not pull vertically, twist, or force the band. If the button feels stuck or the connector appears damaged, stop rather than risk damaging the watch.
The replacement band will not click
- Slide it back out.
- Check that the connector is facing the right way and the band text faces you.
- Confirm that the band matches your watch’s compatible case-size family.
- Re-center the connector with the channel.
- Slide it in again using gentle, even pressure.
Never force a band into the slot. If it still does not lock, center it, press it into place, and carefully wiggle it up and down. A connector that does not align or click may be the wrong size, obstructed, or damaged.

Do not wear it. Remove and reinstall the band, checking its orientation, size compatibility, and alignment. If it still slides out without the release button being pressed, treat it as unsecured. Check the connector and watch channel for damage and contact Apple or the band’s seller if the hardware appears defective.

The watch or band is dirty
Remove the band before cleaning when appropriate. Apple specifically advises removing a leather band before cleaning the watch. Use a cleaning method appropriate for the band material and avoid letting moisture or debris accumulate around the connector or release mechanism. A clean microfiber cloth is useful for protecting the watch while changing bands, but it is optional.
