To change to a watch face you already have, press the Digital Crown if needed, touch and hold the current face, swipe left or right to the face you want, and tap it. That switches the active face without adding or deleting anything.
This guide follows the stable watchOS 26.6 interface, verified as of August 9, 2026. Menu names can differ on older watchOS releases, newer updates, or Apple Watches set to another language. Adding a new face, customizing one, using a photo, and making faces change automatically are separate actions covered below.
First, understand what changing a watch face means
Apple Watch users often use change to describe several different actions:
- Switching: Selecting a face already saved in your face collection.
- Adding: Downloading or creating another face configuration.
- Customizing: Changing a face’s color, style, layout, dial, or complications.
- Using a photo: Creating a Photos face from one or more personal images.
- Organizing: Reordering or deleting faces in the collection.
- Automating: Associating a face with a Focus such as Work, Personal, or Sleep.
- Sharing: Sending a face configuration to another Apple Watch user.
If you simply want a different face right now, use the watch-side switching method first. You do not need to open the Face Gallery or use your iPhone.

Change to a face already installed on your Apple Watch
- Press the Digital Crown if an app is open, so the current watch face is visible.
- Touch and hold the display.
- Swipe left or right through the faces in your collection.
- Tap the face you want to use.
The selected face becomes active immediately. Your other saved faces remain in the collection.
Enable direct left-and-right swiping
On current watchOS 26 software, direct swiping between faces may need to be enabled first:
- Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
- Tap Clock.
- Turn on Swipe to Switch Watch Face.
- Return to the watch face and swipe left or right.
If swiping still does nothing, make sure an app is not covering the face and use the touch-and-hold selector. That long-press method is the dependable fallback.
Apple documents the current switching and face-collection controls in its Apple Watch User Guide.
Add a new face directly on the Apple Watch
Use this method when the face you want is not already in your collection:
- Display the current watch face.
- Touch and hold it.
- Swipe left all the way to the end of the face collection.
- Tap the Add button.
- Browse a face category, or scroll to All Watch Faces.
- Tap Get next to the face you want.
- Tap Add.
- Customize the face if prompted, then press the Digital Crown.
Adding a face creates another entry in your collection; it does not overwrite your existing face configurations. You can save multiple versions of the same face, such as one with weather and calendar complications and another with a minimal layout.
The exact faces shown depend on the Apple Watch model, watchOS version, country, and region. Apple maintains a face and feature availability guide, so a face shown in someone else’s collection may not appear on your watch.
Add and configure a face from the iPhone
The paired iPhone is usually easier for browsing many faces, comparing styles, and configuring several complication slots.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap Face Gallery.
- Tap a category, such as Health & Fitness, Photos, or Data Rich. You can also scroll down and tap See All Watch Faces.
- Select a face.
- If shown, tap Get, then choose the available face option or style.
- Adjust the color, style, dial, font, bezel, or other available settings.
- Tap a complication position.
- Swipe through the available complications and choose one. Select Off if you want that position empty.
- Tap Add to Watch.
Apple’s current Face Gallery uses labels such as Get and Add to Watch. Older guides may show a single Add button or call the area something different. The available controls vary by face and by software version. The face is added to the watch’s collection and, according to Apple’s current guide, becomes the current face after this process.

For an existing face, some versions of the Watch app also offer a route through My Watch > My Faces > [face], followed by Set as Current Watch Face. The location and wording of that control can vary with the iPhone and Watch app versions, so the watch-side long-press method is the more stable way to switch an installed face.
Customize the face on the Apple Watch
You can make many changes without opening the iPhone:
- Display the face you want to edit.
- Touch and hold it.
- Tap Edit.
- Swipe through the available customization screens.
- Change the color, style, dial, font, bezel, or other face-specific options.
- If the face supports complications, swipe to the complications screen.
- Tap a complication position.
- Turn the Digital Crown to select a replacement.
- Press the Digital Crown to save.
- Tap the face to activate it if it is not already current.
Not every face has the same editing screens. Some faces have no complication slots, while others support several positions with different sizes and shapes. A face may also offer only certain colors, layouts, or data fields. Apple’s instructions for editing complications are available in its Apple Watch User Guide.
What is an Apple Watch complication?
A complication is a small information or app element displayed on a watch face. Examples include weather, battery level, calendar appointments, Activity rings, heart rate, a timer, or data from a third-party app.
Complications are not available on every face. The choices also depend on the size and shape of the selected slot. Tapping most complications opens the related app. A third-party app may provide a complication without providing a complete native Apple Watch face; Apple’s developer documentation explains the distinction between watchOS apps, complications, and other integrations.
Use a personal photo as your Apple Watch face
The Photos face lets you use personal pictures rather than selecting only from Apple’s designed face templates. In watchOS 26, Apple redesigned the Photos face with Liquid Glass numerals, so older screenshots may not match the current controls.
Make a Photos face from the iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap Face Gallery.
- Tap Photos.
- Choose a Photos face style.
- Choose one of the available photo sources:
- Shuffle > Featured or People.
- Shuffle > Collection, then choose an album.
- Choose Photos, then manually select up to 24 photos.
- Adjust the available layout options.
- Tap Add.
For shuffled collections, Apple says sixteen photos are automatically selected to display each day. The available layout and time-position options depend on the Photos face style you choose. See Apple’s Photos face instructions for the current options.
Make a Photos face from the Apple Watch
- Open Photos on the Apple Watch.
- Open an album and tap the photo you want.
- Tap the Action button.
- Scroll down and tap Create Watch Face.
- Tap Photos.
If the picture you want is missing, confirm that it is in an album synchronized to the Apple Watch, then reopen the Photos-face setup in the iPhone Watch app.
Reorder faces in your collection
Reorder faces on the iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Scroll to My Faces.
- Tap Edit.
- Drag the reorder handle beside a face up or down.
Reorder faces on the Apple Watch
- Display the current face.
- Touch and hold it.
- Touch and hold the selected face preview again.
- Drag the face left or right into the desired position.
Reordering is useful if you regularly switch between a work face, a fitness face, and a personal face. Put the faces you use most often next to one another.

Delete a face
Delete it on the Apple Watch
- Touch and hold the current face.
- Swipe to the face you want to remove.
- Swipe up on that face.
- Tap Remove.
Delete it on the iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap Edit in the My Faces section.
- Tap the delete button beside the face.
- Tap Remove.
Deleting a face removes that saved configuration, not the underlying face design forever. You can add it again later from Face Gallery or the Add control on the watch.
Make the face change automatically with Focus
You can associate a different Apple Watch face with a Focus such as Work, Personal, or Sleep. When that Focus is active, the assigned face can appear automatically.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap Focus.
- Choose a Focus.
- Scroll to Customize Screens.
- Tap Choose beneath the Apple Watch image.
- Select a watch face.
- Tap Done.
Focus settings are shared between the iPhone and Apple Watch. If your face appears to change by itself, inspect the active Focus and its schedule before assuming the watch is malfunctioning. Apple documents the face assignment controls in its Focus guide.
Share an Apple Watch face
Sharing sends a face configuration, including its supported appearance choices and complications. It does not turn a third-party image into a freely editable native Apple face.
Send a face
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap a face from the collection or Face Gallery.
- Tap the Share button.
- Choose Messages, Mail, or another available sharing method.
Receive a face
- Open the shared face in Messages, Mail, or its link.
- Tap the face.
- Tap Add.
- If it uses a third-party complication, install the required app or tap Continue Without This App.
The recipient must have an Apple Watch running watchOS 7 or later. A missing third-party app may remove the associated complication, but it does not necessarily prevent the rest of the face configuration from being added. See Apple’s instructions for sharing faces.
Choose the right method for your goal
| What you want to do | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Switch between faces already installed | Touch and hold the current face on the watch | It is fastest and does not require the iPhone. |
| Browse a large selection | iPhone Face Gallery | Categories and previews make comparison easier. |
| Configure many complications | iPhone Face Gallery | You can see and edit the available positions on a larger screen. |
| Use personal images | Photos face workflow on the iPhone | It provides more control over albums, shuffling, and selected photos. |
| Change one complication quickly | Edit the face on the watch | You do not need to open the iPhone. |
| Use different faces for work and sleep | Focus-linked faces | The face can change with the active Focus. |
| Send a complete configuration | Share from the Watch app | Face settings and supported complications can travel with it. |
| Display data from a third-party app | Add that app’s complication | A third-party app may provide data without offering a complete native face. |
There is no objectively best Apple Watch face. Choose based on what you need:
- Minimal display: Use a simple face with few or no complications.
- Information density: Choose a face with multiple complication slots.
- Fitness: Consider Activity, Workout, Heart Rate, or related complications.
- Travel and outdoors: Compass, Maps, Weather, Tides, or Wayfinder-style options may help where supported.
- Personalization: Photos, Memoji, Artist, Flow, and other visual faces offer more character.
- Night use: Some faces, including supported Ultra-specific options, offer Night Mode.
These are suggestions rather than universal recommendations. Face features and model restrictions are listed in Apple’s face availability reference.

The display does not respond to touch
Check Water Lock first. While Water Lock is enabled, the screen does not respond to touch.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the Apple Watch says it is unlocked.
- Try the face-change steps again.
Apple explains how to turn off Water Lock in its Water Lock support article.

Swiping left or right does nothing
- Open Settings > Clock and enable Swipe to Switch Watch Face.
- Confirm that the watch is showing a face rather than an app.
- If direct swiping still fails, touch and hold the face, swipe through the collection, and tap the desired face.
A face added on the iPhone does not appear on the watch
Try these steps in order, starting with the least disruptive:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Keep the iPhone and Apple Watch close together.
- Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled.
- Unlock the Apple Watch.
- Check that both devices are running compatible software.
- Restart both devices.
- Reopen the Watch app and try adding the face again.
Apple’s Apple Watch and iPhone connection guide recommends checking proximity and wireless settings and restarting before considering more drastic steps such as re-pairing.
A face is missing from Face Gallery
This does not necessarily indicate an error. Apple says the available face set can differ by:
- Apple Watch model or edition
- watchOS version
- iPhone software compatibility
- country or region
Ultra-only and other model-specific faces should not be expected on every Apple Watch. Updating compatible software may add or change available options, but Apple’s catalog can also vary by region.
Photos do not appear in the Photos face
- Confirm that the pictures are in the selected album or a synchronized album.
- Reopen the Photos-face configuration in the iPhone Watch app.
- For one image, use Photos on Apple Watch > photo > Action > Create Watch Face.
The current photo-selection limits and shuffle behavior are covered in Apple’s Photos face guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe face keeps changing by itself
Check for a Focus-linked face:
Settings > Focus > [Focus name] > Customize Screens > Apple Watch face
Also check whether a Focus schedule is activating Work, Personal, Sleep, or another custom Focus. That is one of the first settings to inspect when the face changes automatically.
A third-party app looks like a watch face but does not behave like one
Apple controls native watch face templates and their complication slots. A third-party app may provide a complication, a shared configuration, a photo-based design, or an app interface that resembles a watch face. Those experiences are not all equivalent to installing a fully free-form native Apple Watch face.
Be cautious with apps that promise unrestricted custom faces. Apple’s official developer documentation describes the supported watchOS app and complication model; it does not promise that any downloaded image or app can replace Apple’s native face system.

Version and compatibility notes
This guide is based on stable watchOS 26.6, released July 27, 2026, rather than preview behavior from the next generation. Apple previewed watchOS 27 in June 2026, but beta or preview interfaces should not be treated as the current stable instructions in this article. You can verify the release information in Apple’s watchOS updates page.
watchOS 26 supports Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE second generation and later, and all Apple Watch Ultra models. It requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 for the watchOS 26 release, according to Apple’s watchOS 26 compatibility information.
If you are using an older supported watchOS version, the overall actions are similar but labels and menu locations can differ. Apple’s Apple Watch User Guide includes version selectors for older releases.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the quickest way to change an Apple Watch face?
Press the Digital Crown to show the face, touch and hold the display, swipe to the face you want, and tap it. If direct left-and-right swiping is enabled under Settings > Clock > Swipe to Switch Watch Face, you can also swipe between faces directly.
Why can’t I swipe between Apple Watch faces?
On current watchOS versions, open Settings > Clock and turn on Swipe to Switch Watch Face. If it still does not work, make sure an app is not open, exit Water Lock if necessary, and use the touch-and-hold face selector.
Can I download any custom design as a native Apple Watch face?
No. Apple Watch uses Apple’s supported native face templates and complication slots. Third-party apps may provide complications, shared face configurations, photo-based designs, or app interfaces that resemble faces, but they cannot all install a completely free-form native face.
Why does my Apple Watch keep changing faces automatically?
Check whether a Focus has an Apple Watch face assigned. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Focus > choose the Focus > Customize Screens, then inspect the Apple Watch face and any Focus schedule.
The Bottom Line
For an immediate change, use the watch: touch and hold the current face, swipe to another saved face, and tap it. Use Face Gallery on the iPhone when you want to add a new face, configure complications, or build a Photos face. If a face is missing or will not sync, check Water Lock, the swipe setting, the watch’s connection to the iPhone, and model, region, and software compatibility.
