Keep the Citizen Promaster Dive BN0162-02X dial-facing in bright light whenever you are not wearing it. Its E168 Eco-Drive movement converts light into electricity, stores that energy in a rechargeable cell and, according to the model manual, can run for approximately six months from a full charge. It is not powered by a conventional disposable battery.

For diving, the BN0162-02X is marked 200 m/20 bar and suitable for scuba diving, but water resistance depends on sound seals, a secured crown and an undamaged case. Charge it before a dive, inspect the crown, crystal, strap and bezel, rinse salt away with fresh water after use, and have an authorized service center test the seals at the recommended interval.

What is the Citizen Promaster Dive BN0162-02X powered by?

The BN0162-02X uses Citizen’s E168 Eco-Drive calibre. The E168 manual explains that the watch is powered by converting light into electrical energy rather than by a conventional battery. Light passes through the dial to a photovoltaic cell, and the resulting energy is stored in a special rechargeable cell that drives the quartz movement.

The reference watch has a polyurethane strap, a 20 mm lug width and a 200 m/20 bar water-resistance rating marked for scuba diving. Charging and reserve figures in this guide apply specifically to the E168 information supplied for this model; other Eco-Drive calibres can have different requirements.

How should I charge an Eco-Drive Promaster Dive?

Make regular light exposure part of your routine instead of waiting for the watch to stop. When the watch is off your wrist, place it dial-up in a bright location, such as a window, with the crown secured. Ordinary daylight is preferable because it supplies useful light without the concentrated heat of a lamp.

  1. Check the indication. A normally moving second hand indicates that the movement is receiving enough stored energy for ordinary operation. A second hand that jumps in two-second steps indicates insufficient charge.
  2. Expose the dial. Put the watch dial-facing toward a bright window or another cool, bright location. Keep the watch dry while charging.
  3. Allow enough time. Use the E168 charging table below as a guide. A stopped watch may begin moving quickly through the quick-start function, but it still needs a substantial recharge.
  4. Set the watch. After it has been adequately charged and the second hand is moving normally once per second, set the correct time and date.
  5. Maintain the reserve. If you wear the watch infrequently, Citizen UK advises placing it in direct light on a dry windowsill for four to five days every six to twelve months. That interval is general guidance; the best charging method varies by model.

The E168 manual specifies approximately six months of operation from a full recharge to stopping. Treat that as a model specification, not a promise that every watch will achieve the same reserve under every age, temperature or usage condition.

How long does a Promaster Eco-Drive take to charge?

Citizen’s E168 manual gives approximate continuous-exposure times at several light levels. The manual’s publication year is not stated, so these figures should be used as practical estimates rather than timed guarantees. “One day of use” means enough energy for roughly one day of operation at that light level; “stopped to full” is the approximate time from an empty state to a full recharge.

Light source and approximate illuminance Charge for one day of use Approximate charge from empty to full Practical meaning
Sunny outdoor light, 100,000 lux About 2 minutes About 11 hours Fastest charging condition listed by the E168 manual; avoid heat even outdoors.
Cloudy outdoor light, 10,000 lux About 11 minutes About 35 hours Useful daylight without direct-sun intensity.
Fluorescent lamp at 20 cm, 3,000 lux About 40 minutes About 120 hours Indoor charging is possible but takes several days of continuous exposure.
Ordinary office, 500 lux About 4 hours Not stated; about 50 hours to resume one-second movement from stopped Can sustain or restart the movement slowly, but is a poor way to restore a deeply depleted reserve quickly.

These are continuous-exposure figures. A watch left on a desk receives less useful light when the dial is shaded, turned away from the source or covered by an object, so real-world elapsed time can be longer. Use the lux values to choose a charging location, not to judge the condition of the rechargeable cell.

What does the two-second jumping warning mean?

When the E168 second hand advances in two-second jumps, the movement is warning that its stored energy is insufficient. The manual says the watch may stop about four days after that warning begins if it is not recharged.

Move the watch to bright, cool light as soon as the warning appears. The quick-start function begins movement after light reaches the dial, but movement starting is not the same as having a full reserve. Let it charge adequately, then correct the time and date. If the hand remains in two-second jumps after sustained exposure under a suitable light source, stop relying on it for a dive and arrange an authorized inspection.

Can I leave the watch in sunlight, under a lamp or on a dashboard?

Light itself is safe for the E168, and the movement includes overcharge prevention, so normal exposure does not require a timer. The hazard is excessive heat, not an ordinary risk of overcharging.

  • Do not charge at approximately 60 °C/140 °F or higher.
  • Avoid incandescent and halogen lamps because they radiate substantial heat.
  • Never leave the watch on a vehicle dashboard or rear deck, where sunlight can drive the case far above a safe temperature.
  • If an incandescent lamp is the only option, keep the watch at least 50 cm/20 inches from the bulb, as specified in the E168 manual.
  • Prefer a dry windowsill or cool indoor daylight, and check that the case is not becoming hot while it charges.

Heat can damage seals, lubricants and the energy-storage system even when the watch appears to be charging normally. A bright location that remains cool is safer than a very hot location that supplies more intense light.

Is the BN0162-02X safe for scuba diving?

Yes, the BN0162-02X product specification lists 200 m/20 bar water resistance and scuba-diving suitability. That rating applies to a watch in good condition with its seals, crystal, crown and case intact; it is not a substitute for inspection or correct handling.

What should I check before entering the water?

Run this check before every dive, especially if the watch has been struck, serviced, stored for a long time or exposed to chemicals:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Push the crown firmly in and tighten its screw fully when the model’s crown is screw-down.
  • Inspect the band, case and crystal for cracks, cuts, deformation or other damage.
  • Rotate the bezel and confirm that it turns correctly.
  • Confirm that the time and date are correct.
  • Verify that the second hand moves normally once per second. Two-second jumps indicate that the watch needs charging before diving.

Do not pull, turn or adjust the crown underwater. A crown that is open or being operated can compromise the water-resistance system even when the watch carries a high depth rating.

What should I do after seawater exposure?

  1. Before rinsing, confirm that the crown is pushed in and its screw is tightened.
  2. Rinse the exterior with fresh water to remove salt, mud and sand.
  3. Dry the case, crystal, bezel and strap with a soft cloth.
  4. Inspect the watch after drying for damage or a crown that no longer seats correctly.

Salt left on the case or strap can attract moisture and accelerate corrosion or material damage. If water enters the watch, or if the crystal remains fogged for a day, take it to a dealer or Citizen service center promptly. Seawater inside the case can increase pressure and dislodge internal parts.

How do I clean the watch without damaging it?

For routine cleaning, wipe the case and crystal with a soft cloth. Clean the polyurethane strap, or a metal, plastic or rubber band, with mild soap and water. A soft brush can loosen dirt trapped between links of a metal band.

  • Rinse away all soap and dry the watch thoroughly.
  • Do not use solvents such as thinner or benzine.
  • Keep the crown pressed in, or fully screwed down where applicable.
  • Never operate the crown with wet fingers or while the watch is wet.
  • Do not use abrasive pads or hard tools on the crystal, bezel or strap.

Citizen’s movement-support guidance also cautions against prolonged high heat, strong magnets, impacts, static electricity and corrosive chemicals. Keep the watch away from those hazards during storage, charging and ordinary wear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the rechargeable cell need replacing?

Not on a routine battery-change schedule. The E168 manual says its special energy-storage cell does not need regular replacement and should be replaced only by an authorized service center.

Do not install a conventional disposable battery or substitute another rechargeable cell. The movement is designed for its original cell; an incorrect cell can overcharge, rupture and damage the watch. Opening the case also exposes the water-resistance system to contamination and requires proper resealing and testing.

When should the watch be serviced?

Citizen recommends an inspection every two to three years for safety and long service life. The interval includes checking water resistance and replacing packings (gaskets) as needed. The manual’s publication year is not stated, so treat the interval as the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendation rather than a legally fixed deadline.

  • The watch repeatedly reaches the two-second warning despite appropriate charging.
  • The second hand stops unexpectedly or the reserve is markedly shorter than before.
  • The crown will not push in or screw down smoothly.
  • The crystal, case, bezel or strap is cracked, loose or badly damaged.
  • Condensation remains under the crystal for a day or any water is visible inside.
  • The watch has been opened by an unqualified person or has undergone a battery-cell replacement.

For a dive watch, request a water-resistance test after case work and at regular inspection. A watch can keep time accurately while its seals are no longer suitable for immersion.

How should I maintain the strap, bezel and visibility for diving?

The BN0162-02X uses a polyurethane strap with a 20 mm lug width. Keep the strap clean, inspect its holes and buckle area for cuts or stretching, and replace it if it can no longer hold the watch securely. A replacement band should match the 20 mm lug measurement and be suitable for the watch’s intended water exposure.

Check that the bezel rotates correctly before a dive and that its markings remain readable. Keep the crystal clean so the dial and hands remain visible underwater. If the crystal is scratched, cracked or loose, have the watch assessed before immersion rather than treating the damage as cosmetic.

What should I do if the watch has stopped?

First, place the dial in bright, cool light and observe whether the quick-start function begins movement. Do not set the time immediately if the hand has only just started; allow enough charging time for stable one-second movement, then set the time and date.

If there is no movement after sustained exposure, try a brighter but still cool source and confirm that the dial is facing it. Do not use a hot lamp or dashboard as a shortcut. Continued failure after appropriate charging warrants an authorized service diagnosis, because the cause could be the energy-storage cell, movement, light path or another component.

What is the safest maintenance routine for an infrequently worn watch?

  1. Store the watch dry with the dial facing a bright location rather than in a dark drawer.
  2. Every six to twelve months, give it four to five days of direct light on a dry windowsill, following Citizen UK’s general advice while recognizing that model requirements vary.
  3. Before wearing it, check one-second operation, the crown position, crystal, strap and bezel.
  4. After any seawater use, rinse with fresh water and dry with a soft cloth.
  5. Schedule the recommended two- to three-year inspection, including water-resistance testing and gasket assessment.

This routine preserves both parts of the watch’s usefulness: a charged movement and a case that remains fit for immersion.

What are the most important do-and-don’t rules?

Do Don’t
Keep the dial in bright, cool light when the watch is off your wrist. Do not charge at about 60 °C/140 °F or higher.
Use the two-second jump as a prompt to recharge before diving. Do not dive while the warning is active.
Secure the crown and inspect the case, crystal, strap and bezel before immersion. Do not pull or turn the crown underwater.
Rinse salt, mud and sand away with fresh water after seawater exposure. Do not use thinner, benzine or other harsh solvents.
Use an authorized service center for cell replacement and water-resistance work. Do not fit a conventional battery or an unapproved rechargeable cell.
Have the watch inspected about every two to three years. Do not ignore persistent fogging, damaged seals or an unusually short reserve.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use any 20 mm strap on the BN0162-02X?

The 20 mm figure is the lug width, so it identifies the width that fits between the watch’s lugs. A strap must also have suitable spring-bar clearance, buckle hardware and material strength for diving; width alone does not establish water suitability.

Why does the watch start moving soon after I put it in light but still stop later?

The quick-start function can restart the hands before the rechargeable cell has regained a useful reserve. Keep charging until the movement runs normally and reliably, then set the time; a brief restart is not evidence of a full recharge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I open the case to check the rechargeable cell?

No. The E168 cell is a special energy-storage component, and the manual assigns replacement to an authorized service center. Opening the case without resealing and pressure-testing equipment can also compromise the watch’s dive protection.

How can I tell whether a fogged crystal is only surface moisture?

Wipe the outside with a soft, dry cloth and observe the crystal. If fogging remains for a day, treat it as possible water intrusion and take the watch to a dealer or Citizen service center rather than continuing to wear it in water.
