Before swimming, read the watch’s water-resistance marking, verify it against the manufacturer’s manual for the exact reference, and secure every screw-down crown or pusher. Inspect the crystal, caseback and crown area for damage or looseness. If the watch is old, has been struck, was recently opened, had a battery changed, or has an uncertain service history, have an authorized service center or qualified watchmaker perform a controlled pressure and condensation test before relying on it in water. For scuba, look for manufacturer documentation identifying the watch as an ISO 6425 divers’ watch; a number such as “100 m” by itself does not prove compliance with that standard or make every water activity safe.
What does a dive watch’s water-resistance marking actually tell you?
A marking in metres or bar states a manufacturer-defined water-resistance limit or test condition. It is not a universal promise that the watch can be used for every activity at that depth. The manufacturer is responsible for stating whether a specific activity falls within the field of use of that particular watch.

The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FHS) distinguishes ordinary water-resistant watches covered by ISO 22810 from divers’ watches covered by ISO 6425. ISO 6425:2018 applies to divers’ watches designed to withstand diving to at least 100 metres and includes requirements beyond a depth number, including a secured diving-time indication that can be read in darkness.
Use the marking as the starting point, then check the exact model’s manual or product documentation. Two watches carrying the same metre figure can have different permitted uses, control restrictions and service requirements.

Metres, bar and the ISO test model
In ISO 6425’s practical test model, a water depth of L metres corresponds to a pressure relationship of Δp = L/10 bar. Thus, 100 metres is associated with a 10-bar pressure difference in that test model. This is a controlled test condition, not a conversion that tells you every real-world movement is safe.
Static pressure from being held at a given depth is different from dynamic pressure created by motion, impact or a rapid change in conditions. Jumping into water, striking the watch against equipment or moving quickly can impose loads unlike a static depth calculation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do I confirm that the rating belongs to my exact watch?
Read the dial and caseback, record every reference or model code, and compare those markings with the manufacturer’s manual for that exact reference. Do not rely on a similar-looking model, a seller’s generic listing or a number remembered from another watch in the same collection.
- Record the markings. Note the stated metres or bar, any “diver” or ISO designation, the reference number and any indication that the crown or pushers screw down.
- Find the official documentation. Use the manufacturer’s manual or product page for the precise reference, including its edition or regional version when shown.
- Check permitted activities. Look for the manufacturer’s activity guidance, warnings about crown and pusher operation, and any required service or gasket procedure.
- Resolve missing information before entering water. If the reference cannot be identified or the manufacturer does not document the intended activity, treat the watch as unverified and obtain professional advice rather than guessing from the number.
For scuba, require explicit documentation that the model is a divers’ watch and note the stated depth. ISO 6425:2018 covers watches intended for diving to at least 100 metres, but the standard designation and the manufacturer’s documentation are what establish that status, not the metre marking alone.
Is a 100 m water-resistance rating safe for swimming?
There is no safe universal answer based only on “100 m.” Follow the manufacturer’s activity table for the exact model. A watch may be described as water resistant to a stated depth yet have restrictions on swimming, diving, or operating its controls.
| Planned use | What to verify | What the marking does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Surface swimming | The manufacturer expressly permits swimming or equivalent surface use; crown and pushers are secured; the case shows no damage. | That any watch marked 30 m, 50 m or 100 m is automatically suitable for swimming. |
| Snorkeling | Manufacturer activity guidance covers repeated submersion and the watch is in sound service condition. | That a static depth number accounts for movement, jumping or impacts. |
| Scuba diving | Manufacturer documentation identifies an ISO 6425 divers’ watch and gives a depth meeting the planned dive. | That a metre number alone demonstrates ISO 6425 compliance. |
| Saturation diving | A model and documentation explicitly intended for saturation diving and helium exposure. | That an ordinary diver-watch marking is sufficient for helium or saturation operations. |
If the manual is silent about an activity, do not infer permission from the number. Ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for a written interpretation before exposing the watch.

What should I check on the watch before swimming?
Perform a visual and control check immediately before water exposure. A watch that passed a test in the past can become unsafe after a damaged crystal, a loose caseback, a deteriorated gasket or an improperly closed crown.
Secure the crown and pushers
- Push the crown fully home and screw it down until the manufacturer’s normal locking position is reached.
- If the watch has screw-down chronograph or other pushers, lock each one fully.
- Never force a thread, cross-thread a crown or leave a crown in a pulled-out setting position.
- Do not press a crown or pusher underwater unless the manufacturer specifically says that function is designed for underwater operation.
ISO 6425 resistance testing includes force applied to crowns and setting devices and requires water-resistance devices to be locked during testing. A control that feels loose, gritty or unable to lock is a reason to keep the watch dry.
Inspect the crystal, caseback and case
- Look for a crack, chip or deep scratch in the crystal, especially near its edge.
- Check that the caseback is not loose, raised or visibly damaged.
- Examine the crown tube, crown guards and pusher surrounds for dents, bent parts or obvious seal damage.
- Check for gaps, corrosion or debris around joints that should be flush.
Do not assume that a watch still has its rated resistance after an impact. A small deformation can compromise a gasket even when the damage is difficult to see.
Why do gaskets and service history matter?
Water resistance depends on a chain of seals around the caseback, crystal, crown and pushers, not on the case material or the printed number alone. FHS states that the mechanism’s effectiveness depends on material quality and the perfect integrity of the components, particularly polymer gaskets, which can lose their properties over time and compromise resistance.
Age, heat, chemicals, compression, assembly errors and ordinary material degradation can reduce a gasket’s ability to seal. A watch can therefore look perfect and still fail a pressure test. The case may also have been opened without a documented gasket replacement or correct torque.
When a professional test is warranted
Arrange a pressure test before water use if any of the following applies:

- The watch has an unknown service history or has been out of service for a long period.
- The case has been opened for a battery change, repair, regulation or inspection.
- The watch received a shock, was dropped or struck diving equipment.
- The crown, pusher, caseback or crystal is loose, damaged or difficult to operate.
- You see condensation or moisture under the crystal.
- You plan a scuba dive and cannot locate a recent, credible test record.
After a battery change or any case opening, ask what gasket was inspected or replaced, whether the case was correctly closed, and what pressure test was performed. A verbal assurance that the case “looks sealed” is not equivalent to a documented test.
How is a meaningful pressure test performed?
A qualified service center uses controlled equipment to check whether the case responds to pressure as expected and whether water can enter. ISO 6425 uses controlled water overpressure together with functional-device, temperature and condensation procedures. The exact sequence and acceptance criteria belong to the standard and the service provider’s equipment.

What the service process can include
- Pre-test inspection. The technician identifies the reference, checks the crown, pushers, crystal, caseback and visible condition, and confirms the intended rating.
- Pressure or vacuum evaluation. The case is subjected to a controlled pressure-related test appropriate to the watch and its rated use.
- Condensation check. The technician checks for evidence that moisture has entered or can enter the case under the specified procedure.
- Functional checks. Controls and other water-resistance devices are checked in the positions required by the manufacturer or applicable standard.
- Documentation. Request the result, the test pressure or method where provided, the date, the watch reference and any gasket or component work performed.
For a watch intended for scuba, ask whether the service provider is authorized for that brand or qualified to service the specific construction. A generic “waterproof” sticker without a reference, date or method is weak evidence.
Can I test water resistance at home?
Do not use a jar, sink, shower or deliberate dunk as a home test. Those methods do not reproduce the controlled pressure, temperature and condensation procedures used for a meaningful evaluation, and water exposure can turn a marginal seal into expensive damage.
A watch pressure tester is the relevant category of tool, but operating one does not create ISO certification and a home result does not replace the manufacturer’s service process. Without the correct adapters, calibrated equipment, test method and interpretation for the case design, a result can be falsely reassuring.
If you need a pre-dive check, use an authorized service center or a qualified watchmaker and keep the watch dry until the result is known. Ask for a written record rather than relying on a visual inspection alone.

What is the difference between swimming and scuba requirements?
Swimming and snorkeling generally involve surface activity and intermittent submersion; scuba adds sustained depth, equipment contact and a need for a dependable elapsed-time indication. The appropriate standard and documentation therefore differ.
Swimming and snorkeling
Use the manufacturer’s activity guidance for the exact model. Secure the crown and pushers, inspect the case, and avoid water exposure if the watch has an unresolved impact, recent opening or uncertain service history. Follow the manual instead of converting the metre number into your own activity rule.
Scuba diving
Choose a manufacturer-documented ISO 6425 divers’ watch with a stated depth that meets or exceeds the planned dive. ISO 6425 includes requirements for a secured diving-time indication visible in darkness, readability, shock and magnetic resistance, corrosion resistance and resistance to forces applied to crowns and setting devices.
The standard’s scope is not just a pressure figure. A watch that carries a large metre marking but lacks documented diver-watch compliance should not be treated as equivalent to an ISO 6425 model for scuba.
Saturation diving
Saturation operations require a model and documentation explicitly intended for saturation diving and helium exposure. Ordinary diver-watch markings do not establish suitability for helium or the pressure cycles associated with saturation work.

Condensation beneath the crystal is a warning that moisture may be present inside the case or that the case has failed a temperature-related condition. Remove the watch from water, do not operate the crown or pushers, and take it to an authorized service center or qualified watchmaker promptly.

| Documented standard | Is ISO 6425 compliance stated for the exact reference, or is there only a general water-resistance marking? | A diver designation covers requirements beyond a depth number. |
| Depth and activity | What depth does the manufacturer state, and does its manual cover swimming, scuba or saturation use? | The manufacturer defines the watch’s field of use. |
| Seal and service evidence | When was the last pressure test? Were gaskets inspected or replaced after case opening? | Polymer gaskets can lose properties and an old test does not prove current integrity. |

| Aftercare | Is there an authorized service center, a stated maintenance procedure and a dated test record? | Water resistance depends on continuing component and service integrity. |
What is a practical pre-water decision process?
Use this sequence whenever the watch will be submerged, and use the stricter scuba branch for a dive.
- Identify the watch. Record the exact reference and the metre or bar marking.
- Read the manual. Confirm the permitted activity and any restrictions on controls.
- Check the condition. Reject water exposure if the crystal, caseback, crown, pusher or threads show damage or looseness.
- Secure controls. Fully close and lock every crown and screw-down pusher.
- Review history. If the watch was opened, struck, had a battery changed, is old or lacks a reliable service record, schedule a professional pressure test.
- Apply the activity test. For scuba, require documented ISO 6425 status and an appropriate stated depth. For saturation, require explicit saturation and helium documentation.
- Stop when evidence is missing. Keep the watch dry rather than treating an unverified rating as permission.
Which ISO 6425 facts are most useful when checking a watch?
- Scope: ISO 6425:2018 covers divers’ watches and saturation divers’ watches intended for deep diving; divers’ watches are designed to withstand diving to at least 100 metres.
- Timing: A secured diving-time indication must remain visible in darkness.
- Pressure model: The practical test relationship is Δp = L/10 bar, where L is the water depth in metres.
- Control loading: One resistance test applies a 5 N force to crowns and pushers.
- Responsibility: The manufacturer states whether a particular activity falls within the field of use of a specific watch.
These points explain why “100 m” and “ISO 6425 diver” are not interchangeable descriptions. The standard combines depth testing with construction, controls, readability and other resistance requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim with a watch marked only “water resistant” without a metre number?
Treat the watch as unverified until its manufacturer identifies the exact reference and permitted activity. Without a documented rating and instructions, a professional inspection is safer than assuming that a general “water resistant” label covers swimming.
Does passing a pressure test make a watch safe for any depth?
No. A test evaluates the watch under a specified method and pressure; it does not expand the manufacturer’s stated rating or activity limits. Use the documented rating and intended use even after a successful test.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I operate a chronograph pusher while underwater?
Only if the manufacturer explicitly documents that the control is designed for underwater operation. Otherwise, set the watch before entering the water and leave the crown and pushers untouched until it is dry.
What information should a pressure-test receipt contain?
Ask for the watch reference, test date, test method or pressure where supplied, pass or fail result, and details of gasket or case work. This record helps establish what was actually checked after a battery change, impact or service.
Is a screw-down crown proof that a watch is ready for a dive?
A screw-down crown improves control security but does not prove that the gaskets, threads, crystal or caseback are intact. The watch still needs the manufacturer’s documented rating and a current service condition appropriate to the planned dive.
