The only reliable way to confirm that a pre-owned Audemars Piguet is genuine is to have Audemars Piguet examine the physical watch and, if the watch is accepted, request its Certificate of Authenticity. Serial-number lookups, archive extracts and seller paperwork are useful inputs, but none of them authenticates the watch on its own. The steps below show how to gather the right evidence, what each document can and cannot prove, and when to stop a transaction.
Know what each document proves
Buyers often treat any official-looking paper as proof. Audemars Piguet (AP) draws a clear line between two documents that are easy to confuse.

Step-by-step: how to verify a pre-owned AP
- Record the exact watch. Write down the model and reference number, the case number, the movement number if it is accessible, the case material, dial, bracelet or strap, and any known service history. Do not judge an older watch against a single modern numbering pattern, because conventions have changed over time (see the numbering section below).
- Ask for the seller’s records and clear photographs. Request original purchase and service documents, close-up images of the case back, dial, movement and bracelet clasp, and a written explanation of any replaced components. Treat these as supporting evidence, not as an authenticity check.
- Make the purchase conditional on professional examination. Arrange inspection through an AP boutique or AP service channel and ask about obtaining a Certificate of Authenticity. Confirm the procedure, any charges and the expected timing with AP in your own market before shipping a valuable watch to anyone.
- Investigate any number anomaly before deciding. A mismatch is a reason to pause, not a verdict. AP’s numbering has changed through its history, and AP’s UK customer service terms state that certain replaced case or movement components may receive a different serial number, which AP records.
- Confirm ownership and title separately. Ask for a traceable seller and clear title. Authenticity and legal ownership are different questions. A watch that is genuine can still be unsafe to buy if its history is unclear.
- Do not open or modify the watch as a test. Opening the case or swapping parts can destroy evidence and make a genuine watch harder to certify. AP’s UK terms say it may decline service for watches with unapproved aesthetic or technical modifications.
Reading case and movement numbers
Serial and case numbers are useful for consistency checks, but their formats have changed. According to AP’s official account of its numbering history, the following patterns apply. These are historical descriptions, not a standalone pass or fail test.
Case numbers before 1975
AP describes the “big case number” as incremental from 1951. A number that looks sequential in this period should be checked against the era and model the seller claims.

Case numbers from around 1975–1976
AP’s history says the case number changed to a letter followed by digits around 1975–1976. A pattern that matches neither the earlier incremental style nor this one warrants closer examination.
Case and movement numbers from 2017
According to AP’s history, numbering shifted to a sequence of random numbers and letters in 2017. AP also states that case and movement numbers became distinct identifiers for watches produced in series, so they should not be assumed to be the same value.

Movement numbers today
AP’s official history states that the current movement number consists of two letters and four numbers. Check the format against the production period the seller describes, not against a generic template.
Reference numbers and configuration
The reference number identifies the model configuration. It can encode details such as case material, gem setting, finish, clasp, strap or bracelet, and dial. AP states that references are not usually engraved on the watch, so the reference must be matched against the paperwork, the watch itself and AP’s information for that exact reference and production period. A generic online serial checker cannot replace that comparison or an expert examination.

Counterfeit, hybrid, modified and stolen watches
These are separate risks, and each one can stop a service or a sale even when a number appears in AP’s records.
Counterfeit parts and hybrids
AP’s UK customer service terms, dated March 2024, state that AP will not service a watch if examination finds counterfeit parts, including a counterfeit or “hybrid” piece. AP may record the visual and technical reasons for that decision. A watch that combines genuine and non-genuine parts can therefore fail even if its case number looks correct.

Unapproved modifications
The same terms say AP may decline service where unapproved aesthetic or technical modifications have been made. Refinishing, replacing a dial, or changing a bracelet with non-AP parts can all fall into this category. Ask the seller to disclose every change in writing.
Watches reported stolen
Under the same UK terms, if AP receives a watch previously reported stolen, it reserves the right to notify the former owner or the relevant authorities and to retain the watch until ownership is determined. These terms are specific to the UK and are not a general statement of law elsewhere. If ownership is unclear, do not complete the transaction.

Decision guide for a specific watch
