Choose the sport and water environment with the strictest requirements. For running, prioritize dependable GPS pace and distance, heart-rate data, training tools, battery life, and a comfortable fit. Pool swimmers need lap, stroke, pace, stroke-count, and SWOLF tracking; open-water swimmers also need a GNSS/GPS route and distance trace. Scuba divers need an explicitly dive-rated computer with a depth sensor, dive mode, and decompression functions—ordinary water resistance is not enough.

That usually leads to one of three choices: a running-first GPS watch such as the Garmin Forerunner 70, a multisport smartwatch with recreational-diving support such as Apple Watch Ultra 4, or a dedicated dive computer with sports-watch features such as Garmin Descent Mk3.

How do I start choosing a sports watch?

Write down your primary activity, then identify the most demanding environment you will enter. A watch that is excellent for road running may be unsuitable for open water, and a swim-capable smartwatch may still lack the sensors and decompression model required for scuba.

  1. Choose the main activity: running, pool swimming, open-water swimming, multisport, snorkeling, or scuba.
  2. Define the water use: no immersion, surface swimming, repeated pool sessions, open water, or planned dives.
  3. Set the training depth: casual tracking, structured workouts, marathon preparation, triathlon, or navigation-heavy trail and ultra running.
  4. Check controls and fit: case size, weight, physical buttons, screen readability, and whether you can operate it with wet hands or gloves.
  5. Verify safety and service: the stated water or dive rating, manufacturer limits, inspection requirements, emergency features, strap suitability, and regional support.

Use the strictest requirement as the deciding filter. If scuba is part of the plan, begin with dive-computer specifications rather than adding a dive app to an ordinary fitness watch.

What should runners compare?

Runners should compare the watch’s GPS mode, pace and distance fields, heart-rate method, training features, GPS battery endurance, and fit. Garmin describes its running watches as providing pace, distance, and wrist-based heart-rate data; its comparison tiers also separate multi-band GPS, training readiness, mapping, multisport profiles, and smartwatch battery ranges.

For casual or first-time runners

Look for reliable GPS pace and distance, wrist heart rate, interval workouts, basic recovery guidance, and a light case. A simple physical-button layout can be easier to operate while moving than a touch-heavy interface. Make sure the strap holds the sensor flat against the wrist without being tight enough to cause discomfort.

For structured or marathon training

Training readiness or training-status features, advanced workouts, multi-band GNSS, race prediction, running dynamics, and longer GPS endurance become more useful. The Forerunner 70 specification lists GPS-based time, distance and pace, running dynamics, stride length, cadence, running power, grade-adjusted pace, PacePro, race prediction, and run/walk detection. These features help a runner plan and review sessions, but they do not replace a coach or medical advice.

For trail and ultra running

Prioritize maps or breadcrumb navigation, a high-capacity battery, physical buttons, and a route-back function. Touch controls can be awkward in rain or with gloves, while a screen that is easy to read in bright daylight matters more than a large collection of smartwatch widgets.

How long should the battery last?

Garmin’s 2026 running comparison lists entry models at up to 5–13 days in smartwatch mode, advanced models at up to 2–4 weeks, and premium models at up to one month or more. Those are smartwatch-mode figures, not continuous GPS results. GPS recording, music playback, maps, notifications, cold temperatures, and a bright display can shorten runtime, so compare the manufacturer’s separate GPS-mode figure with the length of your longest event and add reserve.

Which swimming features matter in a pool?

A pool-focused watch should count lengths and distance accurately for the pool size you set, then add pace, stroke type, stroke count, SWOLF, drills, rest timing, alerts, workouts, and (when supported) underwater wrist-based heart rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lengths, distance and pace

Set the correct pool length before starting. Length and distance totals are useful only when the watch detects turns and pushes consistently; review the activity afterward for missed or extra lengths rather than treating every automatic count as exact.

Stroke analysis

Stroke-type detection for freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly lets you separate technique work from conditioning. Stroke count shows how many strokes the watch recorded per length, while pace gives context for the effort.

SWOLF and drills

SWOLF combines time and stroke count for a length, making it a repeatable efficiency metric when the pool length and effort are comparable. Drill logging is important for kick sets, pull-buoy work, and other exercises that automatic stroke recognition may misclassify.

Rest timers, alerts and heart rate

Rest timers and interval alerts keep a structured set moving without looking at a wall clock. Underwater wrist-based heart rate can add intensity context, but optical readings may vary with fit, temperature, skin contact, and the stroke being performed.

What does an open-water swimmer need?

Open-water swimming requires GNSS/GPS route and distance recording in addition to swim metrics. A pool-only watch can count lengths yet provide no meaningful route trace because there are no pool turns to anchor the calculation.

Check that the watch can acquire and maintain a satellite track during a swim, records a map or breadcrumb route, and keeps the display readable in glare. Physical buttons or a dependable water-lock workflow are preferable when waves make touch input unreliable. If the same device must handle swimming, cycling, and running, a triathlon or multisport profile can simplify transitions and keep activities in one training record.

Can I scuba dive with a smartwatch?

Only when the exact model is explicitly designed and rated for scuba. “Water resistant” describes resistance under specified conditions; it does not by itself provide a depth sensor, decompression calculations, a dive mode, or permission to descend to the number printed on the case.

Apple’s guidance says, “Your Apple Watch is water resistant, but not waterproof.” Apple distinguishes shallow-water use on ordinary models from Apple Watch Ultra models, which are rated to 100 m under ISO 22810:2010, comply with EN13319, and support recreational scuba diving to 40 m. Apple Watch Ultra 4 specifications list a depth gauge, water-temperature sensor, automatic dive launch at 1 m, current and maximum depth and duration, GPS entry and exit points, and a 40 m recreational-dive limit.

Garmin’s Descent documentation illustrates what dedicated dive hardware adds: the Descent Mk2/Mk2s has a 10 ATM dive rating, EN13319 design compliance, a 0–100 m depth sensor, and a Bühlmann ZHL-16C decompression model. Garmin positions Descent Mk3 as a watch-style dive computer with a 200 m dive rating and multisport use.

PADI describes dive computers as the norm for scuba and advises a sports dive watch with a depth rating of at least 100 m (330 ft). That pressure rating is not an automatic authorization to dive 100 m. The model’s stated dive mode, certification, operating limits, battery reserve, training, and dive plan control the safe use.

What is the difference between a sports watch and a dive computer?

A sports watch records exercise metrics; a dive computer continuously interprets depth and time against a decompression model and presents information for the dive. Some products combine both roles, but the dive functions must be explicit in the specifications.

Capability Running or swim watch Dedicated dive computer
Positioning GPS/GNSS for pace, routes, and open-water distance May record entry and exit points, but satellite signals do not provide underwater navigation
Depth measurement Only if a depth sensor is specified Continuous depth sensor with a stated operating range
Dive calculations Usually absent; a compatible recreational app may add limited functions on supported hardware Explicit decompression model and dive-mode controls
Water rating Swimming or general water-resistance rating Explicit dive rating and, where stated, EN13319 or equivalent compliance
Controls and display Designed primarily for exercise and daily wear Readable at depth and operable with wet hands or gloves
Battery planning Measured in smartwatch days or GPS hours Must cover the complete dive, surface interval, and reserve required by the manufacturer

If a specification lists only ATM or meters of water resistance and says nothing about depth sensing or decompression, treat it as a swimming watch, not a dive computer.

How should I interpret 5 ATM or 10 ATM?

ATM is a pressure-resistance designation, not a statement that you can descend to the equivalent number of meters. Dynamic movement, temperature changes, aging seals, impacts, and salt or chlorine exposure affect real-world conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s activity limits and care instructions.

  • A swimming rating can support surface swimming without supporting scuba.
  • A 100 m water-resistance claim can coexist with a much lower stated recreational-dive limit.
  • EN13319 compliance, a depth sensor, and a decompression model are separate evidence of dive capability.
  • Straps, buttons, and seals may have inspection or replacement intervals; check the model’s service documentation before relying on it for a trip.

Which watch category fits each buyer?

Garmin Forerunner 70: running first, pool swimming second

The Forerunner 70 is the logical category for a runner who wants extensive running dynamics and a capable pool profile without making scuba the purchasing priority. Its listed running functions include GPS time, distance and pace, stride length, cadence, running power, grade-adjusted pace, PacePro, race prediction, and run/walk detection. Pool functions include lengths, distance, pace, stroke count, SWOLF, stroke-type detection for the four main strokes, drill logging, rest timers, alerts, workouts, and underwater wrist-based heart rate.

It is not a substitute for a dive computer. Nothing in the listed running-and-pool feature set establishes a depth sensor, decompression model, or scuba operating limit.

Apple Watch Ultra 4: multisport and recreational diving for Apple users

Ultra 4 suits an Apple user who wants one device for daily smartwatch duties, running, pool and open-water swimming, and recreational scuba within Apple’s stated limits. The specifications include 100 m water resistance, EN13319 compliance, a depth gauge, water-temperature sensor, automatic dive launch at 1 m, current and maximum depth and duration, GPS entry and exit points, and a 40 m recreational-diving limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the compatible dive app, your region’s availability, battery reserve, and Apple’s operating guidance before a trip. The 40 m limit is the product’s recreational limit; it should not be expanded because the case carries a 100 m water-resistance number.

Garmin Descent Mk3: scuba capability first

Descent Mk3 belongs on the shortlist when scuba is central and running or swimming should remain on the same watch. Garmin describes it as a watch-style dive computer with a 200 m dive rating and multisport use. Its dedicated-dive positioning is fundamentally different from a general smartwatch that happens to tolerate water.

Compare the exact Mk3 variant’s depth, decompression, battery, display, and service specifications before purchase. The Mk2/Mk2s documentation demonstrates the kind of detail to look for: 10 ATM dive rating, EN13319 design compliance, a 0–100 m depth sensor, and a Bühlmann ZHL-16C model.

How do I compare fit, controls and safety?

Fit affects both comfort and sensor contact. A loose watch can degrade wrist-heart-rate readings and shift during a swim; an oversized case can catch on clothing or a wetsuit. Compare case dimensions, weight, strap material, and whether the strap can be replaced with one suited to chlorine, salt water, or exposure to a wetsuit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controls in wet conditions

Physical buttons are valuable for rain, sweat, and gloves. Touchscreens should have a water-lock or an equivalent mode that prevents accidental taps. Divers should confirm that every required dive control is usable at depth, not merely available through a phone app.

Display and navigation

For running, prioritize legible pace fields and route-back or maps when navigation matters. For open water, look for a readable screen in glare and a satellite track that remains useful after the swim. For diving, prioritize high-contrast depth and time fields, alarms, and a layout that can be read without repeatedly scrolling.

Emergency and service features

Emergency alerts, incident detection, and location sharing can supplement a run plan, but they do not replace a buddy, float, dive training, or a written emergency procedure. Check manufacturer support, firmware policy, battery replacement options, and inspection guidance in the country where you will use the watch.

What are the most common buying mistakes?

  • Choosing by the ATM number alone: verify dive mode, depth sensor, decompression model, and certification.
  • Using a pool watch in open water: require GNSS/GPS route and distance recording for lakes, rivers, and the sea.
  • Comparing smartwatch battery days with GPS hours: use the mode that matches your training and event.
  • Assuming an app creates missing hardware: software cannot turn a case without a depth sensor into a certified dive computer.
  • Ignoring controls: test the planned button and screen workflow conceptually for gloves, wet hands, and low visibility before buying.
  • Overlooking regional or model differences: verify the exact edition, compatible phone ecosystem, dive-app availability, and local support.
  • Treating optical heart rate as a medical instrument: use it for training context and follow professional advice for health decisions.

How we picked the categories in this guide

The selection follows the requirements that distinguish the activities: running watches were judged by GPS pace and distance, heart-rate data, training depth, battery options, and fit; swim watches by pool analytics and open-water GNSS; and dive watches by explicit dive rating, depth sensing, decompression functions, readable controls, and battery reserve. The named products represent those categories rather than a claim that one brand has universally superior GPS, heart-rate, or swim accuracy. No directly comparable independent accuracy study across these brands is established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I make the final decision?

  1. Run only or mostly run: choose a light running-first GPS watch and buy the battery and training features you will actually use.
  2. Run and pool swim: confirm the pool metrics, stroke detection, drills, rests, and underwater heart-rate support before prioritizing smartwatch extras.
  3. Run and open-water swim: require GNSS/GPS route recording, readable controls, and an outdoor battery figure that covers your longest session.
  4. Occasional recreational scuba: choose a model with an explicit recreational dive mode, depth gauge, stated limit, and compatible app, then follow the manufacturer’s and training agency’s rules.
  5. Frequent or technically demanding scuba: start with a dedicated dive computer’s decompression model, depth range, display, controls, service plan, and battery reserve; treat running and swimming features as secondary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a running GPS watch for snorkeling?

Only within the manufacturer’s stated surface-water limits. Snorkeling does not require decompression calculations, but pressure, seals, buttons, and depth limits still apply; a swim rating is not permission for scuba.

Does GPS work while I am underwater?

Satellite signals do not provide continuous underwater positioning. Watches typically record a route when they surface or use GPS points before and after the swim; do not expect a live underwater map.

Should I wear a chest strap for swimming heart rate?

That depends on the watch and sensor ecosystem. The listed wrist-based underwater feature may be sufficient for trend data, but compare the manufacturer’s supported accessories if you need more consistent interval readings.

How much battery reserve should a dive watch have?

Keep enough charge for the planned dive, surface interval, return journey, and the manufacturer’s required reserve. A smartwatch-day estimate is not interchangeable with dive-mode hours, so use the model’s specific dive and GPS figures.
