Measure your wrist where the watch will sit, then check the specific watch’s lug-to-lug length, case diameter, thickness and band. Circumference helps you choose a band and find a rough starting size; the watch’s footprint across the top of your wrist is the better check for overhang. No single case size is right for all women—comfort, proportion and personal style matter more than a chart.
Measure your wrist and the space for the watch
Measure circumference at the intended position
Wrap a flexible tape around your wrist where you normally wear a watch. Keep it snug without pulling tight. If you do not have a tape, wrap a narrow strip of paper around the wrist, mark where it overlaps, then measure the strip against a ruler. Longines recommends measuring at the wrist’s narrowest point; whichever point you use, keep it consistent when comparing measurements with a size guide. Check the flat width from above
Circumference alone does not show how much room the case has across the top of your wrist. Measure the flat width at the position where the watch will sit, viewed from above. As one visualization method, Garmin Singapore asks users to measure horizontally 2.5 cm above the wrist bone, then select a case size in its watch-size preview. That measurement is for Garmin’s preview, not a universal sizing standard.
Which watch measurements matter most?
Lug-to-lug: check for overhang
Lug-to-lug is the distance from the tip of one lug to the tip of the opposite lug—the watch’s length across your wrist. Compare it with the flat width you measured. A useful rule of thumb is that the lugs should fit within that flat area, but wrist shape and preferred appearance vary. If the case extends past the wrist’s edges, it may feel or look too large even when its diameter sounds modest. The lug²lug sizing guide explains this distinction.

Case diameter: judge visual scale
Diameter describes the width of the watch face and is a helpful first filter, not a complete fit test. Longines’ guide suggests 32–36 mm for wrists below 6.3 inches (about 16 cm), 36–42 mm for 6.3–7 inches (about 16–17.8 cm), and 42–46 mm above 7 inches (about 17.8 cm). These are Longines’ recommendations, not an industry-wide standard or rules about what women should wear. Its guide also suggests a case width of roughly two-thirds of wrist width as a visual balance cue. Treat that as styling guidance and consider the whole case, not just the dial.
Thickness and case shape: consider bulk and silhouette
Thickness affects how substantial a watch feels and whether it clears a shirt cuff. Longines suggests 7–9 mm for small wrists, 9–12 mm for medium wrists and 12–15 mm for large wrists; these, too, are the brand’s guidance rather than a universal fit formula. A slim case may suit fitted cuffs or formal wear, while a thicker case can feel more robust for casual or sport use.

Shape changes how dimensions look on the wrist. A cushion or tonneau case can appear smaller than a round case with the same diameter, while square corners can make a watch look larger. If a candidate is near your fit limit, compare its full footprint or use a preview rather than relying on diameter alone.
Use size charts as a starting point, not a rule
Published charts do not all draw the same boundaries. Longines offers the circumference-to-diameter ranges above, while lug²lug presents different ranges and emphasizes the fit between lug span and wrist width. The useful takeaway is not to find one supposedly correct number: shortlist by circumference, then verify the individual watch’s lug-to-lug measurement, diameter, thickness and shape. The available sources do not establish a named population study for average women’s wrist size, so a sizing chart should not be mistaken for an average or a prescription.

Choose a strap or bracelet for comfort
Match the band to the watch and your use
Longines characterizes leather as classic or formal, metal bracelets as more substantial, and fabric or NATO straps as casual and versatile. Its suggested strap widths are 16–18 mm for small wrists, 18–20 mm for medium wrists and 20–24 mm for large wrists. Those are recommendations; the band must also match the watch’s lug width and be available for that model.
If you replace a strap, measure the gap between the lugs and choose a strap of the same width. Wristcheck’s wrist and strap measuring guide illustrates the point: a 19 mm lug width calls for a 19 mm strap. A bracelet may need links removed or added for a secure, comfortable fit; Longines notes that professional adjustment is an option. Avoid wearing a band so tight that it pinches or so loose that the watch slides around.

Preview the size when shopping online

A practical checklist for comparing watches
- Measure: record wrist circumference at the intended wearing position and the flat width across the top.
- Check overhang: compare the watch’s lug-to-lug length with that flat width.
- Assess scale: use diameter and case shape to judge whether the watch looks balanced to you.
- Think about bulk: consider thickness, cuff clearance and whether the watch suits your usual activities.
- Check the band: confirm lug width, material, adjustability and a comfortable fit.
- Preview cautiously: use a paper cut-out or online visualization to judge scale, then verify the exact watch’s measurements.
