Clean a racing chronograph only after confirming the model’s water-resistance condition and the materials on its case, bracelet, and strap. For a watch approved for wet cleaning, secure the crown and any screw-down pushers, use mild soapy water with a soft brush, rinse with fresh water, and dry with a soft cloth. Never press chronograph pushers or turn the crown while the watch is in water. Keep leather dry, rinse permitted watches after salt-water exposure, and arrange an authorized inspection if you see condensation, the watch has suffered a hard shock, or its water-resistance status is unknown.
What should you check before cleaning a racing chronograph?
Read the specific manual first. Racing chronographs differ in case construction, crown and pusher design, crystal, bezel, bracelet, and strap materials; a general water-resistance rating does not override the manufacturer’s instructions. Confirm whether the manual permits rinsing or immersion, and establish whether the seals have been inspected recently.

Verify water resistance, not just the rating
Water resistance is a condition that can change, not a permanent property. Gaskets age, crowns can be left partly open, and an impact can distort a case or compromise a seal without leaving a visible mark. If the watch has a failed or unknown water-resistance check, visible moisture under the crystal, or a loose control, do not immerse or rinse the watch head. Wipe it with a barely damp cloth only where the manual allows and arrange professional inspection.
Separate the materials
Identify the watch head, bracelet, and strap separately. Stainless-steel bracelets and many rubber or silicone straps tolerate the wet-cleaning method specified by their maker. Leather requires dry care, and fabric, satin, or other non-water-resistant materials should not be treated as though they were steel. If the strap can be removed without risking the watch, cleaning it separately keeps moisture and soap away from the case.

Secure every control
Push the crown fully home or screw it down as the manual directs. Secure screw-down chronograph pushers. A closed crown or pusher is a prerequisite for the cleaning method; it is not permission to operate that control underwater. OMEGA’s user guidance states: “To avoid letting water enter the mechanism, do not handle the chronograph pushers in water.”
What tools and cleaners are safe?
Use a soft-bristle watch brush, mild soap, clean water, and a soft or microfiber cloth. A basic watch-cleaning kit is useful when it contains those items, but no special chemical is required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Brush: Choose soft bristles that can reach bracelet links and the case back without scratching polished surfaces.
- Soap: Use a small amount of mild soap diluted in water. Remove all residue during rinsing.
- Cloth: Keep a clean, non-abrasive cloth for drying. A separate dry cloth is useful for leather.
- Water: Use clean fresh water only when the manual permits wet cleaning. If the instructions limit exposure, dampen the brush or cloth instead of rinsing the watch head.
Do not use solvents, household detergents, abrasive brushes, fragrances, cosmetics, or mosquito repellent on the watch. These substances can attack finishes, seals, or strap compounds even when the case is otherwise water resistant.
How do you clean a water-resistant racing chronograph safely?
Work slowly and keep the controls untouched. The following sequence is for a model whose manual permits the described water exposure and whose crown, pushers, and seals are in good condition.
- Remove loose grit. With the watch dry, use the soft brush to lift dust from the lugs, bracelet joints, bezel edge, and case back. Loose grit can become abrasive when rubbed into a polished surface.
- Prepare the solution. Mix mild soap with clean water. Do not add disinfectant, solvent, perfume, degreaser, or household cleaning product.
- Check the controls again. Confirm the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down and that any screw-down pushers are secured. Do not proceed with immersion if a control feels loose or the case shows condensation.
- Clean the approved surfaces. Dip or dampen the soft brush and gently work across the case and bracelet. Concentrate on the underside, clasp, and between links, where perspiration and salt accumulate. Keep the watch away from running water pressure and never press the chronograph start, stop, or reset buttons.
- Rinse only as allowed. Rinse soap away with clean fresh water if the manual permits it. Keep the crown and pushers untouched. If the manual restricts rinsing, use a clean damp cloth or brush to lift the soap instead.
- Dry immediately. Pat and wipe the case and bracelet with a soft cloth, then let the watch air-dry completely in a stable room-temperature place. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, or direct high heat.
- Inspect before wearing. Check the crystal, case seams, crown, pushers, clasp, and lugs for moisture, looseness, or damage. If condensation appears later, stop using the watch and send it to an authorized service center.
Audemars Piguet’s care guidance summarizes the suitable metal-bracelet method as regular cleaning with warm water, a fresh-water rinse, and drying with a soft cloth. That instruction still depends on the individual model’s manual and current seal condition.

How should you clean leather, rubber, silicone, and steel straps?
Leather straps
Keep leather away from bathing, swimming, and routine rinsing. After wearing the watch in heat, wipe perspiration from the strap promptly with a dry, soft cloth and allow moisture to evaporate naturally. Do not soak, scrub, or apply household leather products unless the strap maker specifically approves them; water can stain, stiffen, darken, or deform the leather and its lining.
Alternate leather with a strap intended for wet use when your routine includes frequent exercise, salt water, or heavy perspiration. A leather strap that remains damp, develops deep cracking, or loses its shape should be replaced rather than repeatedly reconditioned with unapproved products.
Rubber and silicone straps
Rubber and silicone are generally more practical than leather for sweat and wet conditions, subject to the watch’s instructions. Clean them periodically with mild detergent and water, rinse fully with fresh water when permitted, and dry before fastening the watch again. Inspect the holes, keeper, underside, and attachment points. Replace a strap that is cracked, brittle, sticky, stretched, or losing elasticity.
Steel bracelets
Steel bracelets can be brushed with mild soapy water when the watch is approved for that treatment. Work the brush through links and the clasp, rinse away soap with fresh water if allowed, and dry the joints thoroughly. Salt and perspiration left in links can cause discoloration or corrosion on exposed surfaces and can irritate skin, so cleaning the underside matters as much as polishing the top.
Fabric, satin, and other materials
Do not assume that a fabric or satin strap is washable because the case is water resistant. Follow the strap’s own care instructions and keep the watch head protected from moisture while the strap is treated. When no wet-care instruction exists, use a dry cloth and ask an authorized service center or the strap maker before applying water.

Never operate the chronograph pushers or crown in water. Pressing a pusher changes the pressure path through its seals; even a screw-down crown does not make button operation safe while wet. Frederique Constant likewise warns that activating chronograph push buttons in water can let water enter the mechanism.
If the watch is not designated for water exposure, clean the exterior with a dry or lightly damp cloth as directed by its manual. Do not use a tap as a substitute for a water-resistance test.
What should you do after salt-water exposure?
For a model approved for water, rinse the case and bracelet with clean fresh water as soon as practical after salt-water contact, then dry it fully with a soft cloth. Salt crystals can remain around links, the clasp, bezel, and case joints after the surface looks dry. Do not rinse a leather strap or a watch with failed or unknown water resistance; remove the source of moisture with a dry cloth and seek advice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAfter exposure to seawater, check the clasp, crown, pushers, and strap attachment points for grit or stiffness. Do not force a control that feels rough. A service center can inspect and replace compromised gaskets before corrosion reaches the movement.
Which conditions and products can damage a racing chronograph?
- Water with open controls: Pressing pushers or turning the crown while wet can admit water.
- Leather, satin, or fabric in water: These materials can absorb and retain moisture even when the case itself is protected.
- Chemicals: Solvents, household detergents, fragrances, cosmetics, and mosquito repellents can damage finishes, seals, or strap materials.
- Impact: A severe shock can compromise water resistance or alter chronograph alignment without obvious cosmetic damage.
- Magnetic fields: Strong fields can affect mechanical timekeeping components; keep the watch away from powerful magnetic sources.
- Temperature extremes: Avoid temperatures below 0°C or above 60°C and rapid temperature changes, which can stress lubricants, crystals, seals, and condensation control.
- High-pressure cleaning: Do not use a pressure washer, compressed air, or a forceful spray around the crown, pushers, crystal, or case back.
A water-resistance marking should therefore be treated as a use condition, not as a lifetime guarantee. Aging seals and shocks are reasons to retest even when the watch appears clean and runs normally.

What if condensation appears inside the crystal?
Stop wearing the watch, do not operate the crown or pushers, and arrange prompt assessment by an authorized service center. Condensation indicates that moisture has entered or that a temperature change has exposed moisture already inside; continued operation can spread damage through the movement and chronograph mechanism.
Do not try to dry the watch on a heater, in direct sun, or by opening the case at home. Keep the crown in its normal closed position and transport the watch in a dry container. Tell the service center when the fog appeared, whether the watch was immersed or shocked, and whether salt water or chemicals were involved.
How often should water resistance and servicing be checked?
There is no cross-brand interval that applies to every racing chronograph. The following published recommendations are manufacturer-specific and differ in scope: some refer to a water-resistance test, while others refer to maintenance or a complete overhaul.
| Manufacturer | Published guidance | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| OMEGA | Water-resistance testing annually; general servicing every 5–8 years, depending on conditions | Separate testing and servicing guidance in current user-care material |
| Tiffany | Water-resistance check at least every 2 years | Water-resistance inspection |
| Victorinox | Maintenance every 18–24 months; complete overhaul about every 6 years | Intervals vary with model, use, and climate |
| Frederique Constant | Service-center check every 4 years | Inspection and service guidance |
Use the interval in your own manual when it is more specific. Bring the test forward after a severe impact, unexplained loss of water resistance, crown or pusher damage, or any condensation. A test is also sensible before a planned period of swimming or regular wet use when the previous inspection date is unknown.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should an authorized service center check?
Water-resistance testing alone does not replace chronograph maintenance. When comparing service options, ask for a written description of the work and confirmation that the provider is authorized for the brand and movement.

Keep the service receipt and water-resistance result with the watch records. They provide a reference point for the next inspection and help a technician understand the watch’s recent use.
How can you build a practical care routine?
After each sweaty or wet outing
- Remove the watch and wipe perspiration from the case, clasp, and strap.
- Rinse with fresh water only if the manual permits it and the seals are current.
- Dry the underside, link gaps, clasp, and strap attachment points.
- Leave leather unfastened until it is completely dry.
During monthly inspection
- Look for cracks, brittleness, stickiness, stretching, or loss of elasticity in rubber and silicone.
- Check that the crown and pushers feel secure and return normally without force.
- Examine the crystal and case for impact marks, gaps, or signs of condensation.
- Brush loose debris from bracelet links and the case exterior before it becomes embedded.
Before travel or water-heavy activity
- Confirm the last water-resistance test and service date.
- Choose a rubber or steel strap rather than leather for repeated wet or high-sweat use.
- Avoid storing the watch against strong magnets or in places exposed to temperatures below 0°C or above 60°C.
- Pack a soft cloth so salt or perspiration can be removed promptly.
How do you know when cleaning is not enough?
Cleaning addresses surface dirt; it cannot repair a damaged seal, pusher tube, crown, crystal, clasp, or movement. Stop home care and arrange service when the chronograph buttons become stiff or fail to reset, the crown no longer seats normally, the strap is structurally degraded, the watch has taken a severe impact, or moisture appears under the crystal.
Do not test a suspect watch by placing it in water. A professional pressure or vacuum test is designed to identify a sealing problem without exposing the movement to the water you are trying to avoid.
What is the safest overall approach?
Use the least exposure that removes the dirt. A confirmed water-resistant racing chronograph with secure controls can usually be cleaned externally with mild soapy water, a soft brush, a fresh-water rinse, and a soft-cloth dry. Every other case—leather or fabric straps, unknown seals, visible condensation, damaged controls, or recent impact—calls for dry cleaning and professional advice instead of immersion.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screw-down crown make it safe to press chronograph pushers underwater?
No. The crown and pushers have separate sealing systems, and pressing a chronograph button changes the conditions around its seals. Keep every control untouched while the watch is wet, regardless of whether the crown is screwed down.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCan I clean a watch that has not had a water-resistance test in years?
Do not immerse it when the inspection date is unknown or overdue. Wipe the exterior with a dry or barely damp cloth according to the manual, then have an authorized center test the seals before returning to wet use.
What should I do if a leather strap gets soaked?
Blot it with a dry, soft cloth, leave it unfastened, and let it dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid heat, soaking it again, or applying an unapproved conditioner; replace the strap if it remains misshapen, cracked, or structurally weak.
Is a water-resistance test the same as a complete chronograph service?
No. A water-resistance test evaluates sealing, while a service may include gasket replacement, control inspection, chronograph-function checks, cleaning, lubrication, and movement work. Ask the provider to state each scope separately on the estimate and receipt.
