Apple Watch setup can be quick, but the complete process may take longer than the initial pairing. Software updates, backup restoration, app installation, and synchronization can continue after the watch appears to be connected. Apple says updates during an iPhone-to-iPhone transfer can take anywhere from several minutes to an hour, so keep both devices nearby and charging if the progress indicator moves slowly.

First identify your situation:
- New, factory-reset, or unpaired watch: use automatic camera pairing.
- Camera scan fails: use manual pairing.
- No setup popup: start from the Watch app.
- New iPhone: transfer or re-pair the existing watch and restore its backup.
- Red iPhone or red X icon: troubleshoot the connection before erasing anything.
These instructions follow Apple’s current setup and support guidance. Menu names can vary slightly with the iOS or watchOS release, but the same options should be available under a similar label.
Before you connect the Apple Watch
Check iPhone, iOS, Apple Watch, and watchOS compatibility
Apple Watch compatibility depends on the exact watch model, iPhone model, iOS version, and watchOS version. A recent iPhone is not automatically compatible with every older or newer watch. Apple’s current compatibility table lists the following minimum combinations:
| Apple Watch | Minimum compatible iPhone | Minimum iOS | Required watchOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series 11 | iPhone 11 or later | iOS 26 or later | watchOS 26 or later |
| Apple Watch SE 3 | iPhone 11 or later | iOS 26 or later | watchOS 26 or later |
| Ultra 3 | iPhone 11 or later | iOS 26 or later | watchOS 26 or later |
| Series 10 | iPhone XS or later | iOS 18 or later | watchOS 11 or later |
| Ultra 2 or Series 9 | iPhone XS or later | iOS 17 or later | watchOS 10 or later |
| Ultra, Series 8, or SE 2 | iPhone 8 or later | iOS 16 or later | watchOS 9 or later |
| Series 7 | iPhone 6s or later | iOS 15 or later | watchOS 8 or later |
| Series 6 | iPhone 6s or later | iOS 14 or later | watchOS 7 or later |
This is not a complete list of every older Apple Watch generation. Check Apple’s official Apple Watch compatibility table before troubleshooting a pairing failure. If the iPhone is too old for the watch, neither automatic nor manual pairing can solve the compatibility problem.
Prepare both devices
- Update the iPhone to the latest iOS available for that model.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Unlock the iPhone and keep it close to the watch.
- Charge both devices before starting. For a new-iPhone transfer, Apple recommends charging the Apple Watch and new iPhone to at least 50 percent.
- Have the Apple Account password available. You may also need the watch passcode.
- If the watch belonged to someone else, make sure it has been properly erased and removed from the previous owner’s Apple Account. A factory reset by itself does not remove Activation Lock.
For an existing watch moving to another iPhone, also update the old iPhone and watch, connect both iPhones to Wi-Fi, and make sure Health is enabled in iCloud at Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All > Health. If you use a Mac or PC backup instead, it must be encrypted to preserve Health and Fitness data. Apple’s new-iPhone transfer guide covers these requirements.
Way 1: Pair a new or erased Apple Watch automatically
Best for: a new watch, a factory-reset watch, or a watch that has already been unpaired and is being configured for its owner.
- Press and hold the Apple Watch side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Put the watch on your wrist, then unlock the iPhone and hold it near the watch.
- Wait for the iPhone message Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch.
- Tap Continue.
- Tap Set Up for Myself.
- When the camera viewfinder appears, hold the iPhone over the animation on the Apple Watch. Center the watch face in the viewfinder.
- Wait for the confirmation that the watch is paired.
- Choose the appropriate setup option: Set Up as New Apple Watch, Make This Your New Apple Watch, or Customize Settings and select an available previous-watch backup.
- Choose which wrist will wear the watch.
- Agree to the terms and sign in with the Apple Account if prompted.
- Create a watch passcode if desired. A passcode is required for features such as Apple Pay.
- Complete the prompts for text size, health features, cellular service, and Apple Pay.
- Keep the iPhone and watch close together until synchronization is finished and the watch face appears.
Expected result: the watch displays its normal watch face and appears in the iPhone’s Watch app. If the setup popup never appears, use Way 3. If the camera cannot read the animation, use Way 2.
Way 2: Pair Apple Watch manually when the camera fails
Best for: a camera that cannot read the animated pattern, an animation that does not display correctly, or someone who cannot use camera-based pairing.
- Begin the normal setup process until the iPhone shows the pairing screen.
- Tap Pair Apple Watch Manually.
- On the Apple Watch, tap the information icon.
- Select the Apple Watch name shown on the iPhone.
- Enter the six-digit pairing code displayed on the watch.
- Continue with setup as new or restore from a backup.
Manual pairing is an official fallback, not a way around other requirements. It does not bypass an incompatible iPhone, a required software update, Activation Lock, or the need to erase a watch that is still paired with another iPhone. Apple’s Apple Watch setup instructions document the manual-pairing option, while Apple’s watchOS security documentation describes the animated pattern and six-digit fallback pairing process.

- Continue with automatic camera pairing or select manual pairing if the camera does not work.
This is an alternate entry point, not a third wireless pairing technology. It is particularly useful when Bluetooth is enabled and the devices are close together but iOS does not show the setup card.

Way 4: Move an existing Apple Watch to a new iPhone
Moving an Apple Watch is different from connecting a brand-new watch. The goal is to preserve the watch’s settings and data while transferring its relationship to the new iPhone.
If the old iPhone is available
- Update the old iPhone and Apple Watch.
- On the old iPhone, check Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All > Health and make sure Health is enabled.
- Back up the old iPhone to iCloud, or create an encrypted backup on a Mac or PC.
- Set up the new iPhone from the latest backup or use Apple’s device-to-device transfer.
- If the new iPhone asks whether to use the Apple Watch, make sure the watch is unlocked and on your wrist, then tap Continue.
- Follow the onscreen instructions and keep the watch and new iPhone nearby while content syncs.
If the watch does not transfer automatically and the new iPhone displays Start Pairing, unpair the watch from the old iPhone and then pair it with the new one. On the old iPhone, use Watch app > My Watch > All Watches > information button > Unpair Apple Watch. Unpairing through the paired iPhone creates a current watch backup, erases the watch, and removes Activation Lock. Then pair it to the new iPhone and restore the latest backup.

Cancel the plan only if you are ending cellular service. Carrier options vary.
If the old iPhone is lost, broken, erased, or unavailable
- On the watch, open Settings > General > Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Complete the erase.
- On the new iPhone, open the Watch app and pair the watch.
- Restore the latest available watch backup.
- If no backup appears, update both devices. If no backup exists, choose Set Up as New Apple Watch.
Erasing directly from the watch removes its local content but does not remove Activation Lock. You will still need the Apple Account and password previously associated with it. Apple explains this distinction in its Apple Watch pairing and reset troubleshooting guide.
If the transfer stopped partway through
On the new iPhone, open Watch app > My Watch > All Watches. If the watch is listed as Pairing Not Complete, put it on your wrist, unlock it, and tap Finish Pairing. This path is often preferable to erasing and starting over. See Apple’s new-iPhone pairing troubleshooting steps if the option does not appear.
Way 5: Reconnect an Apple Watch that was already paired
Best for: a watch that previously worked with the iPhone but now shows a red iPhone or red X icon, or has stopped delivering notifications, messages, or calls.
Do not erase the watch immediately. A red iPhone or red X icon normally indicates that the watch is disconnected. A green iPhone icon indicates that it has reconnected.
- Bring the Apple Watch and its paired iPhone close together.
- On the iPhone, open Control Center and confirm that Airplane Mode is off, Wi-Fi is on, and Bluetooth is on.
- On the Apple Watch, press the side button to open Control Center and confirm that Airplane Mode is off.
- Restart both devices.
- Wait briefly after both restart, then check whether the green iPhone icon returns and notifications resume.
If the watch still will not reconnect, unpair it from the paired iPhone and pair it again. Before doing so, confirm that you can enter the Apple Account password and, if possible, create a current backup. Apple’s guide to reconnecting Apple Watch covers the red, green, and disconnected-device indicators.
Special case: Apple Watch For Your Kids, formerly Family Setup
Apple Watch For Your Kids is not ordinary owner pairing. It allows an organizer to configure a compatible cellular Apple Watch for a family member who does not have their own iPhone. The setup still requires a managing iPhone, and it does not turn a normal Apple Watch into a fully independent device.
Requirements
- A compatible cellular Apple Watch.
- A compatible iPhone for the organizer’s initial setup.
- An Apple Account for the organizer and another Apple Account for the family member.
- Two-factor authentication.
- A Family Sharing group.
- The organizer must be the family organizer or a parent or guardian.
- Carrier and regional support for the available cellular features.
How to set it up
- Erase the watch if it was previously used.
- Bring it near the organizer’s iPhone.
- Open the Watch app and tap All Watches > Add Watch if necessary.
- Tap Set Up for a Family Member.
- Pair through the animation or choose manual pairing.
- Select the family member.
- Configure the passcode, cellular service, Wi-Fi, contacts, Screen Time, Schooltime, health, and safety features.
Family Setup has important limitations. Depending on the age, model, region, and software, features such as ECG, Sleep, irregular heart rhythm notifications, Apple Pay cards, Blood Oxygen, Cycle Tracking, some apps, and some gestures may be unavailable or restricted. Carrier support also differs. Check Apple’s Apple Watch For Your Kids requirements and feature list before buying a watch for this purpose.

What happens to your data when you pair or move the watch?
What a watch backup can preserve
Apple Watch data is automatically backed up to the paired iPhone when the devices are near each other. Unpairing through the iPhone creates a current backup, and an iCloud or computer backup of the iPhone includes Apple Watch data. A backup can include:
- App settings.
- Watch-face settings and customizations.
- Notification settings.
- Home Screen app layout.
- Health and Fitness data.
- Workout and Activity calibration data.
- Synced music and photos.
- Time zone settings.
What you must set up again
A watch backup does not include Bluetooth pairings, Apple Pay cards, or the Apple Watch passcode. Information already synchronized to iCloud, such as Messages or Voice Memos, is not stored in the watch backup either. You will need to add payment cards and establish Bluetooth connections again.
Health and Fitness data requires Health in iCloud or an encrypted computer backup. Activity Sharing data is not stored in iCloud, and changes made after the latest backup may be lost. Apple’s Apple Watch backup documentation lists the inclusions and exclusions.
| Setup choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Set Up as New Apple Watch | A first watch, or a clean start | You must recreate watch faces, settings, apps, and preferences. |
| Restore from Backup | Replacing an iPhone or watch while preserving configuration | Older settings may return, and Apple Pay cards, Bluetooth pairings, and the passcode still need to be re-established. |
| Customize Settings | Choosing a backup while reviewing settings | Takes longer but gives more control. |
Fix common Apple Watch pairing problems
The watch shows a clock face instead of pairing mode
A normal clock face usually means the watch is already paired. If the old iPhone is available, unpair it through Watch app > My Watch > All Watches > information button > Unpair Apple Watch. This erases the watch and removes Activation Lock.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the old iPhone is unavailable, erase the watch from Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings, then pair it to the new iPhone. You will still need the previous Apple Account credentials if Activation Lock appears.
The iPhone camera will not scan the animation
Make sure the watch is in setup mode and the camera can see the entire animated pattern. If it still fails, tap Pair Apple Watch Manually and use the information icon on the watch to obtain its name and six-digit code. Manual pairing is the correct fallback; repeatedly moving the devices around will not solve a damaged or unreadable animation.
The watch is stuck on the pairing animation
While the watch is in pairing mode, press and hold the Digital Crown until Reset appears. Tap Reset, allow the watch to restart, and try pairing again. This erases the setup attempt, so use it only when the pairing animation has genuinely stopped progressing.
The watch is stuck on the Apple logo
For a watch being paired to a new iPhone, follow Apple’s restart-and-reset sequence:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Press and hold the Digital Crown and side button together until the watch restarts.
- Release both buttons.
- Firmly press the screen or press and hold the Digital Crown.
- Tap Reset.
- Bring the iPhone near the watch and begin pairing again.
Use Apple’s pairing troubleshooting guide if the reset option does not appear.
You forgot the Apple Watch passcode
Place the watch on its charger, then:
- Press and hold the side button until the power button appears.
- Release the side button.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the red Reset button appears.
- Tap Reset, then confirm.
- Pair the watch again and enter the original Apple Account credentials if Activation Lock is requested.
This process erases the watch. A backup can restore supported settings and data afterward.

Activation Lock appears
Activation Lock means the watch remains associated with an Apple Account. Enter that account’s credentials to continue. For a secondhand watch, the previous owner must remove it from their account. A seller’s factory reset alone is not enough.
If you are buying a used Apple Watch, ask the owner to unpair it from their iPhone and remove it from their Apple Account before handing it over. Apple explains how unpairing, erasing, and Activation Lock removal differ.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The watch shows an iPhone-and-watch animation or a red exclamation point
This indicates a restore or update path rather than ordinary pairing. Try the following:
- Use an unlocked iPhone running iOS 15.4 or later.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and turn on Bluetooth.
- Put the Apple Watch on its charger.
- Double-click the watch side button.
- Follow the prompts on the iPhone.
If it fails, try a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network instead of 5GHz. Avoid captive-portal networks and 802.1X networks. Persistent red-exclamation errors may require Apple service. See Apple’s restore and red-exclamation-point instructions.
Health or Activity data is missing
Confirm that you restored the correct iPhone backup and that Health was enabled in iCloud on the old iPhone. If you used a computer backup, it must have been encrypted. Data recorded after the latest backup may not be recoverable, and Activity Sharing data is not stored in iCloud.
Cellular setup fails
You can activate cellular during initial setup or later at Watch app > My Watch > Cellular > Set Up Cellular. For an ordinary cellular Apple Watch, the iPhone and watch generally need to use the same carrier. A watch configured through Apple Watch For Your Kids may use a different carrier, depending on regional and carrier support. Check Apple’s cellular activation guidance and contact the carrier if the plan cannot be provisioned.
After the watch says it is paired
Before leaving setup, verify the connection rather than assuming the process is complete:
- The watch appears in the iPhone’s Watch app and displays its normal watch face.
- Notifications, messages, and calls arrive as expected.
- Health and Fitness data is present if you restored a backup.
- Watch faces and apps have finished syncing.
- Apple Pay cards have been added again if you use Apple Pay.
- Bluetooth accessories have been paired again if necessary.
- The cellular plan is active if the watch is a cellular model.
- The watch has a passcode if you intend to use Apple Pay or other passcode-protected features.
Contact Apple if the watch repeatedly freezes, shows a persistent red exclamation point, or cannot complete a reset or restore. Contact the carrier for an unsupported region, failed eSIM activation, or a cellular-plan problem. If Activation Lock belongs to a previous owner, only that owner can normally remove the association.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pair an Apple Watch with an Android phone?
No. Ordinary Apple Watch pairing requires a compatible iPhone, and switching between iPhones requires unpairing, transferring, or pairing again. A cellular Apple Watch is not fully set up as a standalone Android-compatible watch.
Can I set up an Apple Watch without an iPhone?
Not for ordinary owner setup. Apple Watch For Your Kids can configure a compatible cellular watch for someone without their own iPhone, but the initial setup still requires an organizer’s compatible iPhone, Family Sharing, two-factor authentication, and supported carrier and region conditions.

Can one Apple Watch pair with two iPhones?
No, not simultaneously. Apple Watch uses a one-iPhone pairing relationship. To use it with another iPhone, transfer or unpair it and pair it with the other device.
Do I need cellular service to pair an Apple Watch?
No. GPS Apple Watch models can pair and work through the iPhone without a cellular plan. Cellular service is optional and can be activated during setup or later at Watch app > My Watch > Cellular > Set Up Cellular. Carrier and regional support determine whether activation is available.
Does pairing erase the Apple Watch?
Pairing a new or already-erased watch does not create an additional erase. However, moving a watch to a new iPhone commonly requires unpairing, which erases the watch and creates a backup for restoration. Erasing directly from the watch also removes local content but does not remove Activation Lock.
Will Health and Activity data transfer to the new iPhone?
It can, provided Health is enabled in iCloud or you restore an encrypted computer backup. Apple Pay cards, Bluetooth pairings, and the watch passcode do not transfer through the watch backup. Activity Sharing data is not stored in iCloud, and changes after the latest backup may be lost.
Recommended Free Tools
Why is my Apple Watch asking for someone else’s Apple Account?
The watch has Activation Lock enabled and is still associated with that account. The previous owner must remove the watch from their Apple Account; resetting the watch alone does not remove Activation Lock.
How long should Apple Watch setup take?
The initial camera or manual pairing can be quick, but software updates, backup restoration, app installation, and synchronization can take much longer. Apple says updates during an iPhone-to-iPhone transfer may take several minutes to an hour. Keep both devices close and charged while progress continues.
What if my iPhone is too old for my Apple Watch?
Check the exact model and software combination in Apple’s compatibility table. A newer watch such as Series 11, SE 3, or Ultra 3 requires an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later according to Apple’s current table; manual pairing cannot bypass that requirement.
Can I activate cellular after pairing?
Yes. Open Watch app > My Watch > Cellular > Set Up Cellular. Ordinary cellular Apple Watch service generally requires the iPhone and watch to use the same carrier, while Family Setup can have different carrier rules depending on the region and provider.

Use automatic camera pairing for a new or erased watch, manual pairing when the camera fails, and Watch app > All Watches > Add Watch when the setup popup is missing. A watch moving to a new iPhone needs a backup-aware transfer, while a red iPhone or red X icon usually calls for reconnection checks—not an immediate erase. Before resetting any watch, account for Health backups, Apple Pay cards, cellular service, and Activation Lock.
