You do not need a Samsung phone, Samsung account, Galaxy Wearable, or the Galaxy Buds app for basic listening.
The exact pairing gesture varies between Galaxy Buds generations, so do not assume that opening the case alone is enough.
Before connecting your Galaxy Buds
- Charge the earbuds and charging case.
- Confirm that the laptop has working Bluetooth hardware and that Bluetooth is enabled.
- Turn off airplane mode.
- Keep the open case close to the laptop.
- Temporarily disconnect the Buds from a phone, tablet, television, or another computer. They may reconnect to that device instead of entering pairing mode.
If the laptop has no Bluetooth, use a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter. Check the laptop manufacturer’s specifications and driver support before buying one; an adapter cannot fix earbuds that are not in pairing mode or are still connected elsewhere.
Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide also recommends checking battery level, range, interference, airplane mode, drivers, and nearby USB 3.0 devices.

- Put the Buds into pairing mode.
- Open Start → Settings → Devices.
- Select Bluetooth & other devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device.
- Choose Bluetooth.

How to put different Galaxy Buds models into pairing mode
Pairing mode is model-dependent. The Buds must be discoverable; simply opening the case may not be sufficient, particularly when they are already associated with another device.
| Model family | Pairing-mode guidance |
|---|---|
| Galaxy Buds4 and Buds4 Pro | With the earbuds in the open case, hold the case’s Connect button for more than three seconds, until the indicator flashes in the pairing pattern. |
| Buds3 and Buds3 Pro | Use the model-specific Samsung pairing procedure. Do not assume the Buds4 case-button method applies. |
| Buds2 and Buds2 Pro | Older touch-control models commonly enter pairing mode when both earbuds are in your ears and you touch and hold both touchpads. Follow Samsung’s instructions for the exact model. |
| Buds Live, Buds Pro, Buds and Buds+ | Many use the touch-and-hold method when the earbuds are worn. Some situations require the earbuds to be placed in the case and the model-specific manual pairing procedure to be repeated. |
For exact instructions, use Samsung’s current model-specific laptop pairing guide. If the Buds immediately reconnect to a phone, temporarily disable Bluetooth on that phone before trying again.
Make the Buds the laptop’s speaker and microphone
Bluetooth pairing and audio selection are separate steps. A laptop can report that the Buds are connected while continuing to play sound through its built-in speakers, a monitor, a dock, or another headset.
Windows 11
- Select the sound icon on the taskbar.
- Open the output-device selector.
- Choose the Galaxy Buds.
- For a persistent issue, open Settings → System → Sound → Output and select the Buds.
Windows 10
- Select the speaker icon in the taskbar.
- Choose the Galaxy Buds from the playback-device list.
- If necessary, open Settings → System → Sound and select them under output.
macOS
Open System Settings → Sound, then select the Buds under Output. Select them under Input if you want calls to use the earbuds’ microphones.
Video-call apps
Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Discord, and other applications may have their own speaker and microphone selectors. Set both explicitly inside the app. In practical terms:

- Connected: a Bluetooth link exists.
- Connected for audio: the operating system has recognized the Buds as an audio device.
- Selected output: music and video are routed to the Buds.
- Selected microphone: calls use the Buds’ microphone rather than the laptop’s built-in microphone.
Why music quality can drop during a call
When a Bluetooth headset microphone becomes active, Windows or macOS may switch from a higher-quality stereo playback mode to a headset or hands-free mode. Music can then sound narrower, quieter, or noticeably less detailed. This is commonly a Bluetooth profile and operating-system limitation, not evidence that the Buds are defective.
If music quality matters during a call, select the Galaxy Buds as the speaker but use the laptop’s built-in microphone, provided the conferencing app allows separate choices. Also close other applications that may be using the Buds microphone and test the setup with music playback and a separate call.
What works on a laptop?
| Function | Typical laptop support |
|---|---|
| Basic stereo audio | Generally available through Bluetooth on compatible Windows and Mac laptops. |
| Microphone | Usually available, although activating it can reduce playback quality. |
| Noise control and ambient modes | Model-, operating-system-, and app-dependent. |
| Touch-control customization and equalizer settings | May require supported Samsung software or a compatible Galaxy device. |
| Firmware updates | Host- and app-dependent; some models require Galaxy Wearable or supported PC software. |
| Samsung seamless switching | Ecosystem-dependent and not guaranteed between a laptop and other devices. |
| Basic pairing | Does not require a Samsung phone or Samsung account. |
Samsung’s Buds4 compatibility table separates Samsung Galaxy devices from PCs, iOS devices, and other Bluetooth hosts. Do not assume that every ANC control, codec, setting, update method, or automatic-switching feature works identically on Windows and macOS.
Do you need the Galaxy Buds app?
No, not for basic Bluetooth audio. Pair the earbuds through Windows or macOS first. Install supported Samsung software only if you need device management, advanced settings, service information, or firmware updates.
Samsung’s PC software information is available through its Galaxy Buds Windows software support page. App support varies by model, so an app failing to find the Buds is a separate problem from Bluetooth pairing.

Fix common Galaxy Buds connection problems
The Buds do not appear in the Bluetooth list
- Open the charging case and confirm the earbuds are charged.
- Use the correct model-specific pairing gesture; do not leave them merely powered on.
- Move the case close to the laptop.
- Disable Bluetooth temporarily on nearby phones, tablets, and computers.
- Turn laptop Bluetooth off, wait several seconds, and turn it on again.
- Restart the laptop.
- On Windows 11, change Bluetooth device discovery from Default to Advanced if that option is available.
- Check Device Manager to confirm that the laptop’s Bluetooth adapter exists and has no warning icon.
If Bluetooth is missing entirely, check the laptop specifications, hardware switch, airplane-mode setting, and manufacturer drivers. A compatible USB Bluetooth adapter may be necessary.
The Buds appear but pairing fails
- Remove the old Galaxy Buds entry from Windows or macOS.
- Disable Bluetooth on devices to which the Buds previously connected.
- Charge the case and earbuds.
- Put the Buds back into pairing mode.
- Pair them again as a new Bluetooth device.
- Update the laptop’s Bluetooth driver if the failure continues.
Samsung notes that an existing connection to another device can prevent the expected pairing flow. Its Windows pairing demonstration is available on Samsung’s support channel.
Windows says connected, but there is no sound
- Select the Buds as the active output device.
- Check the application’s own output setting.
- Confirm the Buds appear as an audio device rather than only a generic Bluetooth device.
- Temporarily disconnect monitors, docks, speakers, and other headsets.
- Check Windows, application, and earbud volume.
- Remove and pair the Buds again if necessary.
Only one earbud produces sound
- Put both earbuds in the case and confirm that both show charging.
- Clean the charging contacts carefully.
- Check the laptop’s left/right balance setting.
- Remove the Bluetooth entry and pair the Buds again.
- Update Buds firmware where supported.
Resetting the earbuds is a later-stage option because it removes saved settings. Samsung’s one-earbud Windows troubleshooting guidance also recommends unpairing and pairing again.
The connection keeps dropping
- Keep the Buds and laptop within normal Bluetooth range.
- Remove obstructions where possible.
- Move the laptop or case away from crowded wireless devices and unshielded USB 3.0 peripherals.
- Test without a USB hub or dock.
- Update the Bluetooth driver.
- Check whether the laptop exposes Bluetooth power-saving settings and disable aggressive power saving for testing.
- Remove and re-add the Buds.
If simpler fixes fail, technically confident Windows users can investigate the Bluetooth Support Service, but corporate laptops may restrict such changes.

The microphone sounds poor
Check the selected input in both the operating system and the call application. If activating the Buds microphone changes music to low-quality headset audio, use the laptop microphone for calls and the Buds for output. Close other programs that may be claiming the microphone.
The Galaxy Buds app cannot find the earbuds
First verify that Windows or macOS can pair and play audio. Then check whether the specific Buds model is supported by the Samsung application, and update or reinstall the app if necessary. App detection is not a prerequisite for basic Bluetooth listening.
Samsung laptop, other Windows laptop, or Mac?
A Samsung Galaxy Book may provide deeper Samsung ecosystem integration, but a Dell, Lenovo, HP, Asus, Acer, or Mac laptop can generally use Galaxy Buds as Bluetooth headphones if it has compatible Bluetooth support.
Pairing several devices does not guarantee simultaneous multipoint or seamless automatic switching. Remembered devices, an active connection, Samsung ecosystem switching, and true multipoint are different features. Availability depends on the Buds model, laptop, operating system, and software combination.

Consider a USB Bluetooth adapter when the laptop has no Bluetooth, its internal adapter has failed, or its driver cannot be repaired. Check supported Windows versions, Bluetooth audio profiles, driver availability, and the return policy.
Do not buy one merely because the Buds are not producing sound: incorrect output selection, pairing mode, another active connection, and outdated drivers are more common explanations. Adapter codec support and call behavior also depend on the adapter, operating system, laptop, and Buds model.
