What you can customize on a Galaxy Watch8
Available settings depend on the face. One may expose color, clock style, background, complications, or app shortcuts; another may offer fewer choices. Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by model and region.
Editing and creating are different tasks: the watch’s editor changes options provided by an installed face. Watch Face Studio lets a designer build a new face and define which styles or palettes its users can change.
Method 1: Customize a face on the Galaxy Watch8
- Wake the watch and display its current face.
- Touch and hold the face to open face selection.
- Browse installed faces and select one with Customize.
- Tap Customize. Move vertically through options in the current category and horizontally between categories.
- Select the options you want. Available controls depend on the face.
- Press the Home key to return. The shown choice is applied automatically.
If a setting or complication is missing, the face may not support it. Try another face with the options you want.

Method 2: Customize through Galaxy Wearable
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the phone connected to your watch.
- Open Watch faces and select a face already installed on the watch.
- Tap Customize, if available, and adjust the options offered for that face.
- Save or apply the selection as the app prompts.
Samsung says only faces already installed on the watch can be customized through the app. Menu labels and available choices can vary.
Choosing another ready-made face
To browse other options, select a face on the watch or open Galaxy Wearable > Watch faces. Samsung also points users to Google Play through Galaxy Wearable for additional faces. Availability varies, and some faces may be paid.
Create a new face with Watch Face Studio
Watch Face Studio (WFS) is Samsung’s desktop authoring tool for Wear OS faces. It supports arranging components, images and text, styling elements, and defining customization choices for users. Download the current version from Samsung’s official developer page; its download page lists version 1.9.9, dated August 3, 2026.
Plan the design
Start with a readable time display, then add only the data and decoration that serve the design. Galaxy Watch8 has a round screen, but WFS projects may need to account for different device resolutions and shapes. Keep important elements away from the edge; Samsung notes that elements can shift to help prevent burn-in.

- Define user customization: Use the Customization Editor to organize and name styles and theme palettes. Clear labels help users understand the choices shown in Customize mode.
- Preview the result: Use WFS preview tools to inspect time, date, battery, activity, and ambient-mode conditions.
- Test on a compatible watch: Confirm the design and its supported features on the intended device and software setup.
Samsung’s WFS guide documents image-based layers with up to 10 image styles, theme palettes with up to 3 colors, and up to 30 theme colors for a face. These are authoring capabilities, not guarantees that any particular downloaded face exposes those options.
Creators can also combine styles and components into premade configurations in the Customization Editor. Samsung’s code lab says this workflow requires WFS 1.9.5 or later and a Galaxy Watch or other smartwatch running Wear OS 5 or later.
Can you use your own photo?
Photo support depends on the face. Samsung’s Photo Slot feature lets a creator enable photo selection through the companion app; Samsung says it was introduced in Wear OS 6. Its developer tutorial documents one Photo Slot component per project. The feature can allow photos to change when tapped or when the watch wakes, depending on the implementation.
Do not assume every face accepts a personal photo. Verify that the face implements Photo Slot and that the watch and companion-app setup support it. For a fixed image, use a face or WFS design that supports an image background.

Compatibility, ambient mode, and performance
Samsung says WFS-created faces are compatible with Wear OS devices running API level 30 or higher, subject to limitations such as deprecated APIs. Check the current WFS documentation and target device requirements before building or distributing a face.
Samsung notes that a second hand is not supported in ambient mode and advises hiding it in that mode. Use WFS’s on-pixel analysis to inspect a design. Samsung also says darker colors and removing unused layers can help reduce battery use, while too many components can degrade performance.
Google Play and Watch Face Format
Samsung’s current developer download page says Watch Face Format is required for faces installed on devices with Wear OS 5 pre-installed starting July 10, 2024, and for all new Google Play face publications starting January 27, 2025. It also states that new Google Play watch faces require a minimum SDK of 33 or higher. Check Samsung’s current requirements and Google Play Console before packaging a public release; local installation does not guarantee publication.
