To customize an Apple Watch face, open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap Face Gallery, choose a face, adjust the options it offers, and tap Add to Watch. You can also add or edit faces directly on Apple Watch. Available colors, layouts, and complication slots depend on the face and watch; watchOS 26 also brings Liquid Glass styling to the Photos face and redesigned face discovery with faces grouped into collections.
What can I customize on an Apple Watch face?
Apple Watch customization has two main parts: the face’s appearance and the information shown on it.
- Appearance: Choose from the colors, styles, layouts, and other controls exposed by the selected face.
- Complications: Add optional glanceable features such as Activity, Calendar, Weather, or Compass where the face provides a suitable slot.
- Photos: Use selected or synced photos with the Photos face.
- Your collection: Save multiple faces, then switch between, reorder, remove, or share them.
Options vary by face and device. Choose among the faces and settings actually shown in Face Gallery or on your Watch; do not assume every face or option is available on every model.
How do I customize my Apple Watch face on iPhone?
The Watch app’s Face Gallery is Apple’s guided route to browse, configure, and add a face.

- Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap Face Gallery.
- Choose a category, such as Photos, Health & Fitness, or Data Rich, and browse the faces shown.
- Select a face and preview the color, style, or other options it offers.
- To set a complication, tap a position and choose from the options shown for that slot. Choose Off if offered and you want the position empty.
- Tap Add to Watch.
Apple says the face is added to your collection and becomes the current face. A face with few controls is not missing a hidden setting; it may simply offer fewer choices.
Edit a saved face on iPhone
Open Watch, tap My Watch, then select a face under My Faces. Adjust the options shown for that face. You can also add another configured version from Face Gallery rather than changing the one you already use.

- With the current face visible, touch and hold the display.
- Swipe left to the end of the collection and tap Add.
- Browse the collections or available faces, then select one.
- Tap Add and customize the face afterward if desired.
To switch to a saved face, touch and hold the current face, swipe to the one you want, and tap it. Apple also documents a Settings > Clock > Swipe to Switch Watch Face control for switching by swiping across the display; availability can depend on software, so use the controls shown on your Watch.
Edit a face on Apple Watch
- Display the face, touch and hold it, then tap Edit.
- Swipe through the edit screens and tap a feature such as color or style.
- Turn the Digital Crown to browse the choices offered for that feature.
- If the face supports complications, swipe to its complication screen and tap a position.
- Turn the Digital Crown to choose an available complication, then press the Digital Crown to save.
- Tap the face to use it.
Not every face supports complications, and you cannot create a slot that the face does not provide.
How do I add complications to my Apple Watch face?
A complication is a small feature or information element on a face. Examples include Activity, Calendar, Weather, Compass, stock information, or information from an installed app. Some App Store apps also provide complications, but the available slots and choices depend on the selected face.

- On the Watch, display the face you want to change and touch and hold it.
- Tap Edit and swipe to the complication screen.
- Tap a complication position.
- Turn the Digital Crown to browse the options available for that position.
- Press the Digital Crown to save, then tap the face to use it.
On iPhone, open the Watch app, select a face in Face Gallery or My Faces, tap a complication position, and choose from the options shown.

How do I put a photo on my Apple Watch face?
Use the Photos face in the Watch app to choose a shuffle source, synced collection, or specific images. Apple’s guide allows up to 24 manually selected photos; in shuffle mode, it selects 16 photos to display each day (Apple Support, year not stated on the guide page).

- Open the Watch app on iPhone and tap Face Gallery.
- Choose Photos.
- Choose Shuffle to use Featured or People, select a collection or album, or choose Choose Photos to select images manually.
- If selecting manually, choose up to 24 photos.
- Scroll down to configure the layout, then tap Add.
Photos may change when you raise your wrist or tap the display. For watchOS 26, Apple announced that the Photos face is enhanced with Liquid Glass numerals: “The popular Photos watch face is enhanced with numerals made of Liquid Glass, allowing users to see even more of their photo.” (Apple Newsroom, June 9, 2025.) This is not a guarantee that every model supports every Photos-face option.

Create a Photos face from Apple Watch
- Open Photos on Apple Watch and choose an album and photo.
- Tap the Action button.
- Scroll to Create Watch Face.
- Tap Photos.
If chosen images do not appear, check that they are in the album synced to Apple Watch.

Reorder faces on iPhone
- Open the Watch app and tap My Watch.
- Open My Faces and tap Edit.
- Drag the reorder control beside a face to change its position.
Reorder faces on Apple Watch
- Touch and hold the current face.
- Touch and hold again when the face collection appears.
- Drag the selected face left or right.
Remove a face on Apple Watch
- Touch and hold the current face and swipe to the one you want to remove.
- Swipe up and tap Remove.
Remove a face on iPhone
- Open Watch, tap My Watch, and open My Faces.
- Tap Edit, then tap the delete control beside the face.
- Tap Remove.
You can add a removed face again later.
How do I share an Apple Watch face?
- In the iPhone Watch app, select a face from your collection or Face Gallery.
- Tap Share and choose a sharing route.
- The recipient can open the shared face from Messages, Mail, or a link and tap Add.
If the face includes a third-party complication, the recipient can obtain the app or continue without it. Without that app, the complication is absent. Apple’s current sharing guide says recipients need Apple Watch with watchOS 7 or later.
What can’t I customize on an Apple Watch face?
Apple’s documented workflow lets you customize supplied face designs using the controls they expose. It does not provide a workflow for freely drawing a new native face with arbitrary graphics, custom complication placement, or any layout you choose. Third-party apps may provide complications, but that is different from replacing Apple’s face system with an unrestricted design.

Why can’t I add a complication to my watch face?
The face may not support complications, the chosen position may not offer that complication, or the app or feature may not be available on your device. Try a different position or face and check the options shown in the editor.
Can I use more than one photo on a Photos face?
Yes. You can use shuffle or a synced collection, or manually select up to 24 photos. Apple’s guide says shuffle mode selects 16 photos to display each day (Apple Support, year not stated on the guide page).
Can I have different faces for work and exercise?
Yes. Add and configure multiple faces, then switch among the saved faces on your Watch. You can also use the face-switching controls available in your software settings.
Will a shared face include every complication?
Not necessarily. If a complication requires a third-party app the recipient does not have, they can add the face without that complication.
