Turning off auto-launch changes what opens on the watch; it does not stop audio playback or remove Now Playing. If the watch returns to Music or Now Playing after waking, or if similar songs keep playing after a queue ends, those are separate behaviors with separate controls.
Turn off Auto-Launch Audio Apps
On the watch, try the documented path:
- Press the Digital Crown and open Settings.
- Tap General, then Wake Screen.
- Turn off Auto-Launch Audio Apps.
You can also check the paired iPhone:
- Open the Watch app and tap My Watch.
- Tap General, then Wake Screen.
- Turn off Auto-Launch Audio Apps.
The cited consumer instructions for this switch are dated, and Apple’s current support material reviewed for this article does not confirm that the same path or label appears on every watchOS version. If you do not see it, do not assume another menu path applies to your watch; consult the menus available on your installed software.
What turning off auto-launch changes
Auto-launch is the behavior of automatically opening an audio app on the watch when audio begins on the companion iPhone. Disabling it does not stop playback on that device or change the playback destination.

Now Playing remains available for manual use. Apple says you can open the app directly, tap its watch-face complication, or open the Now Playing widget in Smart Stack while media is playing. It can control playback on Apple Watch, iPhone, and other devices.
If the watch returns to Music or Now Playing after waking
This is different from an audio app opening when playback begins. Apple’s guide describes a separate Return to Clock control for choosing whether the watch returns to an app after waking. To have the watch return to the clock face instead:

- Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
- Tap General, then Return to Clock.
- Choose Music or Now Playing.
- Turn off Return to App for that app.
Auto-launch and Return to App address different triggers: the first concerns an audio app opening when audio begins; the second concerns what the watch shows after it wakes.
If similar songs keep playing
Apple Music AutoPlay is not the same as Auto-Launch Audio Apps. AutoPlay adds similar tracks to the end of a Music queue. On Apple Watch, turn it off from the Music queue:

- In Music, start an album or playlist.
- Open More Options, then Playing Next.
- Tap the AutoPlay button to turn it off.
Apple says the AutoPlay change applies only to that device; other devices using the same Apple Account keep their own setting.

FAQ
Will turning off Auto-Launch Audio Apps stop music from playing?
No. It changes whether an audio app opens automatically on the watch. It does not stop playback on the paired iPhone or another audio device.

Can I still use Now Playing after disabling auto-launch?
Yes. You can open Now Playing directly, from a watch-face complication, or from its Smart Stack widget while media is playing.

Is Auto-Launch Audio Apps the same as Apple Music AutoPlay?
No. Auto-Launch concerns an audio app opening on the watch. AutoPlay adds similar songs to a Music queue and has a separate control in Playing Next.
How do I stop the watch from returning to Music after waking?
Open Settings > General > Return to Clock, choose Music or Now Playing, and turn off Return to App for that app.
