To prepare an Apple Watch for a gift, sale, trade-in, or recycling, unpair it using its paired iPhone, remove its cellular plan if applicable, and enter the Apple Account password to turn off Activation Lock. If the iPhone is unavailable, erasing the watch directly removes its contents but does not remove Activation Lock, so complete that account step before handing it over.
Why unpair Apple Watch instead of only erasing it?
Unpairing from the paired iPhone restores the watch to factory settings and removes Activation Lock. Apple states: “Unpairing your Apple Watch restores it to factory settings and removes Activation Lock.” See Apple’s unpairing and erasure instructions.
Activation Lock prevents another person from activating a watch that remains linked to the former owner’s Apple Account. A watch may appear erased while still requiring that owner’s account and password during setup.
Erasing directly on the watch is different: go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. This erases the watch but does not turn off Activation Lock. Apple also notes that erasing the device does not delete content from iCloud. If the paired iPhone is unavailable, erase the watch directly but have the former owner remove Activation Lock before transferring ownership.

What should you do before unpairing Apple Watch?
Have the paired iPhone nearby and know the Apple Account password and watch passcode. During unpairing, the iPhone attempts to create a watch backup that can be used to set up a replacement watch. Apple’s backup documentation explains the process.
If preserving Health and Fitness information matters, make sure it is covered by iCloud or an encrypted computer backup. Do not assume an ordinary, unencrypted computer backup preserves that data.
Before a sale or gift, note the model, case size, GPS or GPS + Cellular connectivity, visible condition, accessories, and whether the watch reaches the setup screen. Describe battery condition only if you have checked it.

How do you unpair and erase an Apple Watch from an iPhone?
- Keep the watch and its paired iPhone close together.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then All Watches.
- Tap the information button beside the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch and confirm.
- For a cellular model changing owners, choose to remove its plan.
- Enter the Apple Account password when prompted to turn off Activation Lock, then confirm.
- Wait for unpairing and erasure to finish. Turn off the watch for handoff, or leave it at the setup screen.
Before handing it over, confirm that the watch is erased and setup does not request the former owner’s Apple Account password.

- On the watch, open Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the watch passcode if prompted and confirm erasure.
- If it is a cellular model being handed over, remove the plan if offered.
- Before transfer, have the former owner remove the watch from their Apple Account to turn off Activation Lock.
Direct erasure does not remove Activation Lock. The new owner cannot activate the watch normally while it remains linked to the former owner.
How do you handle the cellular plan?
Remove the plan during the handoff process for a GPS + Cellular watch being sold or given away. Removing the plan from the watch is separate from cancelling the carrier subscription. Contact the carrier to cancel service if needed; fees may apply. Apple’s sale and gift guidance covers plan removal and handoff.

For a GPS-only watch, there is no cellular plan to remove. For a cellular watch you are keeping, choose the plan option appropriate to your situation.

What if you already gave away or sold the Apple Watch?
Use Find My iPhone on iCloud.com to erase the watch remotely, then remove it from the account. Apple’s sale and gift instructions describe this recovery process.
- Sign in to the Apple Account at iCloud.com and open Find My.
- Choose All Devices, select the Apple Watch, and choose Erase Apple Watch.
- After erasure completes, select the X beside the watch to remove it from the account.
If the watch is offline, the remote erase can proceed when it next connects. Do not consider Activation Lock removed until the erase is complete and the watch has been removed from the account.
