The exact factory-reset procedure depends on the watch’s brand, model, operating system, and software version. A factory reset normally erases data stored locally on the watch—apps, settings, downloaded media, wallet credentials, and unsynced activity—and usually removes the phone pairing. It does not necessarily remove the owner’s cloud account, activation lock, Google-account verification, eSIM, cellular subscription, or listing in a device-finding service.
If you are selling, gifting, trading in, or recycling the watch, do more than erase it: back it up, use the official unpair or handoff process, remove the watch from the owner’s account, and deal with cellular service separately. A watch can display its welcome screen and still be locked to its previous owner.
First, choose the right kind of reset
Do not factory-reset a watch simply because it is temporarily slow or frozen. A reset is destructive and normally requires you to set up and pair the watch again.
| Situation | Best first action |
|---|---|
| The watch is slow, briefly frozen, or has a battery problem | Charge it and try a normal restart or force restart first. |
| One app or watch face is malfunctioning | Update the watch and companion app, then restart the watch. |
| Pairing repeatedly fails | Remove the old watch from the companion app and the phone’s Bluetooth memory, restart both devices, and retry. Reset only if troubleshooting does not work. |
| You forgot the PIN, passcode, or pattern | Use the manufacturer’s recovery or forgotten-passcode reset. Expect local data to be erased. |
| You are keeping the watch but want a clean start | Sync or back up first, then reset and pair it with your phone again. |
| You are selling, gifting, trading in, or recycling it | Back up, use the official handoff or unpairing process, remove account locks, handle the eSIM or cellular plan, and then confirm the setup screen appears. |
| You want to delete historical health data from the cloud | Use the account’s data-management controls. Resetting the watch alone usually does not delete already-synced history. |
A restart attempts to preserve your data. A factory reset permanently erases local data and restores default settings. Google explains this distinction for Wear OS devices in its restart and reset guidance.

What a smartwatch factory reset erases—and what it does not
The wording varies by manufacturer, but a full reset generally removes the following from the watch:
- Installed apps and app data stored on the watch.
- Watch faces, tiles, widgets, preferences, alarms, notifications, and settings.
- Downloaded music, maps, podcasts, and other offline content.
- Locally stored wallet or payment credentials.
- Unsynced workout, activity, sleep, or health records.
- The Bluetooth or companion-phone pairing.
These items may remain somewhere else:
- Health and fitness history that already synchronized to Apple Health, Google, Fitbit, Garmin Connect, Huawei Health, Samsung Health, or another cloud service.
- The owner’s Apple Account, Google Account, Samsung account, Fitbit account, Garmin account, Huawei ID, or other cloud account.
- Activation Lock, Factory Reset Protection, Google-account verification, or another ownership check.
- An eSIM profile or the carrier’s cellular subscription.
- The watch’s entry in Find My, Find My Device, Samsung Find, or another device-management service.
That is why factory reset, unpairing, account removal, remote erase, and eSIM removal should be treated as separate actions:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Factory reset | Erases local watch data and restores default settings. |
| Unpair | Removes the watch-phone relationship. On some platforms, the official unpair workflow also erases the watch and removes an ownership lock. |
| Account removal | Removes the device from an Apple, Google, Samsung, Fitbit, Garmin, Huawei, or other account where the platform supports that action. |
| Remote erase | Sends a wipe command through a cloud device-finding or management service. |
| eSIM removal | Deletes the cellular profile from the watch. It may not cancel the carrier plan. |
Apple explicitly distinguishes unpairing from simply erasing an Apple Watch, while Fitbit distinguishes erasing a device from deleting the Fitbit account. Huawei likewise says that resetting the wearable does not clear history already synchronized to Huawei Health.
Before resetting: a safe checklist
- Identify the exact model. Check the watch’s About screen, the back of the case, its packaging, or the companion app. Galaxy Watch3, Wear OS 2 and Wear OS 3 watches, older Fitbits, and Garmin models can have different instructions.
- Charge the watch. Put it on the correct charger before backing up or entering recovery mode. A reset interrupted by a depleted battery can leave the watch stuck during startup.
- Sync while the watch still works. Open the companion app and wait for the latest workouts, sleep records, health measurements, and activity to upload. Unsynced records may be unrecoverable after a reset.
- Back up settings and apps where supported. Backup coverage varies. Apple Watch backups do not restore Apple Pay cards, Bluetooth pairings, or the watch passcode. Samsung does not back up music saved directly on the watch. Garmin models may offer separate settings-only and full-delete choices.
- Export anything you intend to keep. If you are leaving an ecosystem or deleting an account, export health, workout, or other data before deleting the account. A device reset is not a cloud-data export.
- Move credentials and passes. Transfer authenticator codes, transit passes, access badges, digital keys, payment cards, and other credentials before wiping the watch. Some are removed automatically, but you should not assume that every service can be restored from a backup.
- Record account credentials. You may need the Apple Account, Google Account, Samsung account, Fitbit, Garmin, or Huawei credentials after the reset. A reset is not a way to bypass ownership verification.
- Decide what happens to cellular service. Keep the plan when pairing the same watch to the same owner where appropriate; remove the eSIM and cancel or transfer the plan when selling or gifting. These are separate decisions.
- Photograph the watch and record its serial number. This is useful for a trade-in, repair, insurance claim, or dispute about the device you sent.
Platform-specific backup reminders
- Apple Watch: the paired iPhone backs up the watch automatically. Apple says backups can include app settings, watch-face customizations, and Health and Fitness data, but not Bluetooth pairings, Apple Pay cards, or the watch passcode. Health and Fitness backup requires iCloud or an encrypted computer backup. See Apple’s Apple Watch backup details.
- Samsung Galaxy Watch: in Galaxy Wearable, open Watch settings > Account and backup > Backup settings or Back up data, depending on the model and software. Samsung notes that screens vary by watch, carrier, and software version, and that music saved directly to the watch is not backed up. See Samsung’s backup and restore instructions.
- Google Pixel Watch: Google recommends Wi-Fi and placing the watch on its charger. A backup may take up to a few days, so do not treat the Pixel Watch backup as an instant handoff step. Its handoff guidance includes the current backup and eSIM advice.
Important: cellular plans and eSIMs
A factory reset does not universally cancel cellular service. Depending on the platform, it may leave the eSIM, delete the eSIM while leaving the subscription active, or require a new activation QR code after the reset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Apple Watch: when pairing again with the same iPhone, keep the cellular plan if the setup screen offers that choice. When selling or gifting the watch, remove the plan. Removing the plan from the watch is not necessarily the same as canceling the carrier subscription; check with the carrier.
- Google Pixel Watch: for a sale, trade-in, or gift, delete the eSIM during the reset where the option appears, then confirm separately that the watch plan has been canceled. Google’s Pixel Watch handoff instructions cover this process.
- Samsung Galaxy Watch: an LTE watch activated with a QR code may need a new QR code to reactivate service after resetting. Samsung documents this warning in its Galaxy Watch reset and recovery guidance.
- Huawei Watch: if you intend to keep using an activated eSIM, leave Delete eSIM configuration unchecked. Deleting the profile may require carrier deregistration and reactivation. If the watch is changing owners, follow Huawei’s and the carrier’s instructions instead.
Choose your watch and follow the correct reset procedure
Use the section for your brand below. Menu names can change with software updates, regional versions, cellular variants, and model generations. If the option is missing, search the manufacturer’s support site for the exact model rather than applying a button combination from a different watch.
Apple Watch
Best method when the paired iPhone is available
Use the iPhone workflow when selling, gifting, trading in, or moving the watch to a different owner. Apple’s official unpairing procedure creates a current backup, erases the watch, restores factory settings, and removes Activation Lock.
- Keep the Apple Watch and iPhone close together.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap All Watches.
- Tap the info button beside the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Confirm the watch name.
- For a cellular model, choose to keep the plan if you will pair it with the same iPhone; choose to remove it if you are selling or giving away the watch.
- Enter the Apple Account password when prompted. This disables Activation Lock.
- Wait until the watch is erased and displays the setup screen.
Erase Apple Watch when the iPhone is unavailable
- On the watch, open Settings > General > Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the passcode if requested.
- Choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
- Tap Erase All.
This erases the watch but does not remove Activation Lock. It is suitable when you are keeping the watch and plan to pair it again with the same owner. It is not the preferred sale or gift procedure. If the iPhone is lost, use Apple’s official account and Find My removal process rather than asking the buyer to bypass the lock. Apple’s used Apple Watch handoff guidance explains what a buyer should verify.
Reset an Apple Watch when you forgot the passcode
- Place the watch on its charger.
- Press and hold the side button until the power sliders appear.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the erase screen appears.
- Tap Reset, then tap Reset again.
- Set up the watch again and restore from a backup if one is available.
Apple says this erases the watch but leaves Activation Lock enabled. Do not insert an object into a case hole: Apple Watch does not have a physical reset button.

Wear OS instructions vary by generation and manufacturer. Google’s Wear OS reset guide lists the following common paths.
Wear OS 3
- Wake the watch and swipe down from the top.
- Tap Settings > General > Reset.
- Confirm the reset and enter the PIN if requested.
Wear OS 2
- Wake the watch and swipe down.
- Tap Settings > System > Disconnect and reset.
- If that option is not present, choose Unpair with phone.
- Tap Done to confirm.
A Wear OS factory reset erases watch data, installed apps and app data, settings, and preferences, and unpairs the watch from the phone. A manufacturer’s own companion app may use different labels or provide the preferred handoff workflow.
If a Wear OS watch will not pair after resetting
- Open the Wear OS or manufacturer companion app and forget, disconnect, or remove the watch.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and remove the old watch entry.
- Restart the phone.
- Reset the watch if it has not already been reset.
- Reinstall the companion app if necessary.
- Pair again from the companion app’s add-device flow, not by manually connecting from Bluetooth settings.
Do not leave an old Bluetooth entry connected while attempting a new pairing. Google provides a Wear OS pairing and reset troubleshooting sequence.

Google Pixel Watch
Reset from the watch
- Swipe down on the watch.
- Tap Settings > Disconnect & reset.
- Tap OK.
You can also reach Settings by pressing and holding the crown for about three seconds. On some versions, the same command is labeled Disconnect and reset.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Reset from the Pixel Watch app
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app.
- Tap System.
- Tap Reset and unpair watch.
- Confirm the erase.
This erases apps, settings, and data on the watch. Use the app workflow for a normal handoff when the phone is available.
Pixel Watch recovery reset for a forgotten PIN or inaccessible watch
Use recovery only when the normal reset is unavailable or the watch cannot be accessed. Google’s current Pixel Watch reset instructions describe this sequence:
- Hold the crown and side button for about 20 seconds until the Google G logo appears.
- Tap the upper-left and lower-right edges of the display simultaneously.
- Use the side button to highlight Recovery Mode, then press the crown.
- When No Command appears, press and hold the crown while swiping up.
- Highlight Wipe Data or Factory Reset.
- Swipe right to reset.
- Highlight Reboot system now.
- Swipe right or press the crown to reboot.
After some recovery resets, Pixel Watch may require the most recent PIN or the previously used Google Account login when you pair it again. That verification is an ownership safeguard, not a fault with the reset.
Pixel Watch backup and LTE handoff
Before selling or gifting, enable Wi-Fi, place the watch on its charger, and in the Pixel Watch app open Google > Backup > Turn on. Google says the backup can take up to a few days. During Settings > System > Disconnect & reset, choose Erase eSIM where available, and separately confirm with the carrier that the cellular plan is canceled.

Samsung uses different paths for Galaxy Watch, Gear, Galaxy Fit, and Fit2 models. Its model-specific reset guide warns that available options vary.
Reset Galaxy Watch or Gear from Galaxy Wearable
- Open Galaxy Wearable.
- Tap Watch settings if that option is shown.
- Tap General > Reset.
- Tap Reset again to confirm.
Reset Galaxy Fit or Fit2
- Open Galaxy Wearable.
- Tap About band.
- Tap Reset band.
- Confirm.
Some Galaxy Fit models can be reset only through the app or when connecting to a different phone. Do not assume that a Galaxy Watch path applies to a Fit band.
Recovery reset for a frozen or inaccessible Galaxy Watch
The following is Samsung’s general recovery path for supported models; button combinations are model-dependent. Galaxy Watch3 uses a different combination to enter the reboot menu, so check the exact model’s support page if this does not work.
- Where possible, unpair the watch from the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Power off the watch.
- Power it on.
- Hold the Power/Home key until Rebooting… appears.
- Release the key or keys.
- Immediately press and release the Power/Home key repeatedly to open Reboot Mode.
- Continue until Recovery is highlighted.
- Press and hold the Power/Home key to select it.
- On Wear OS Galaxy Watches, select Wipe data/factory reset.
- Select Factory data reset.
- After the wipe completes, reboot the watch.
Samsung says a forgotten PIN or pattern cannot be changed without a reset. Depending on the reset route, the watch may require verification of the Google Account previously connected to it. If Auto factory reset had been enabled, 20 failed unlock attempts can trigger a reset. Samsung’s recovery and LTE troubleshooting page covers these variations.

Fitbit devices
Fitbit reset instructions are highly model-specific. Do not use one button combination for every Fitbit watch or tracker. Google’s current Fitbit reset matrix is the safer starting point.
Fitbit Charge 5, Charge 6, and Luxe
- Swipe down from the clock.
- Open Settings > Device Info.
- Tap Clear User Data.
- Confirm the erase.
The device may need to be connected to its charger before the option works.
Fitbit Ace LTE
For a normal reset, hold the top side button and select Disconnect and reset.
For recovery:
- Hold both side buttons for approximately 16 seconds.
- When the watch vibrates, release them and immediately hold the bottom side button.
- Use the bottom button to select Recovery mode.
- Use the top button to select it.
- Choose Wipe data/factory reset.
- Reboot the watch.
Check Google’s Ace LTE recovery instructions if the controls or labels differ.
Fitbit account data is separate from device data
Deleting a Fitbit account does not automatically erase data stored locally on the Fitbit device; erase the device first if another person will receive it. Conversely, resetting the device does not necessarily delete historical workouts, sleep records, or health data already synchronized to the Fitbit account. Google explains the distinction in its Fitbit account and device-data guidance.
For older Fitbit models, follow the exact model’s current support page. Google recommends that some older-device reset procedures be performed only under Fitbit Customer Support direction; avoid copying an old button sequence without checking the model. See the Fitbit restart and older-device reset guidance.
Garmin watches
Garmin menu structures vary substantially by model. Garmin directs owners to the product’s owner’s manual for the correct procedure; its reset and ownership guidance is a useful starting point.
Example path on supported current Garmin models
On manuals for models such as Venu 4 and Forerunner 170, the path is generally:
- From the watch face, open the settings or menu controls.
- Go to System > Restore & Reset.
- Tap Reset.
- Choose the appropriate option:
- Reset Default Settings: restores defaults while preserving user-entered data and activity history.
- Delete Data and Reset Settings: restores defaults and deletes user data and history.
Use the full-delete option for a sale, gift, or recycling handoff, and sync with Garmin Connect first. The full deletion can remove Garmin Pay wallet data and stored music. The exact labels and options may differ on your model; consult the Venu 4 manual or the manual for your own watch.
Garmin consequences after a reset
Some Garmin models support device backups through Garmin Connect. A factory reset can also remove the ECG app; Garmin says ECG setup must be completed again in Garmin Connect. Garmin wearables can generally be used by a new owner without an action from the previous owner, but Garmin still recommends a factory reset to remove personal data and settings. Its ECG reset information explains the setup consequence.
Huawei Watch and Band
Reset from the wearable
- Open the app list.
- Go to Settings > System & updates > Reset, or Settings > System > Reset, depending on the model.
- Confirm the reset.
Reset from Huawei Health
- Open Huawei Health.
- Open the device details page.
- Tap Restore factory settings.
- Confirm.
Sync first. Huawei says resetting clears personal data on the wearable but does not clear historical data already uploaded to Huawei Health. If you intend to continue using an activated eSIM, leave Delete eSIM configuration unchecked. Deleting the profile can require carrier deregistration and reactivation. For a forgotten PIN, use Huawei’s official forgotten-PIN guidance. General reset and eSIM behavior is documented in Huawei’s Watch and Band reset instructions.

- Watch JIU
Nothing, Amazfit, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Fossil, TicWatch, and other brands
There is no reliable universal procedure for these watches. Check the model name first, then use the manufacturer’s current support page or manual.
- Nothing Watch Pro: use Settings > System > Factory Reset > Factory Reset, as described by Nothing support.
- Amazfit: the menu and button sequence vary by model. Official manuals commonly place Factory reset under system or About settings and require pairing again afterward. Start with the manual for the exact Amazfit model.
- Xiaomi, OnePlus, Fossil, TicWatch, Citizen, and similar watches: search the manufacturer’s support site for the exact model plus factory reset. Do not assume that a Wear OS label or recovery combination applies just because the watch uses Wear OS.
What to do after the reset
- Wait for the welcome or setup screen. A watch that boots directly into the old owner’s dashboard has not completed the handoff.
- Pair from the correct companion app. Use Apple Watch, Galaxy Wearable, Google Pixel Watch, Fitbit, Garmin Connect, Huawei Health, or the app specified by the manufacturer. Do not start by pairing from the phone’s generic Bluetooth menu unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to.
- Complete account verification. Apple Activation Lock, Google-account verification, or another ownership check may request the previous credentials. The rightful owner must complete it; there is no legitimate buyer-side bypass.
- Restore only after pairing succeeds. Reinstall apps and watch faces, download offline music and maps again, and configure notifications.
- Add payment and access credentials again. Apple Pay cards and similar wallet credentials generally require reauthorization rather than being restored from the watch backup.
- Reconfigure cellular service. Activate or transfer the plan only after confirming whether the old eSIM was retained or deleted. Samsung LTE watches may need a replacement QR code.
- Re-enable health features if required. For example, Garmin says ECG setup must be completed again in Garmin Connect after certain resets.
For a sale or gift, stop only when the watch reaches the initial setup screen and a new owner can begin setup without your account credentials.
Troubleshooting when the reset or pairing fails
The watch is frozen or stuck on the logo
- Charge it with the correct charger and confirm that the charger is making contact.
- Try a normal restart.
- Use the manufacturer’s force-restart sequence.
- Try the official recovery reset for the exact model.
- If the screen, buttons, battery, or charging hardware remains unresponsive, contact the manufacturer.
A force restart is not a factory reset. For example, holding the Pixel Watch crown and side button initially performs a reboot; the separate Fastboot and Recovery sequence is what performs the wipe. A reset may repair corrupted settings or software, but it cannot repair a damaged display, button, battery, or water-damaged device.
You forgot the PIN or pattern
Most platforms do not provide a way to reveal or recover a forgotten watch PIN without erasing the watch. Use the brand’s recovery method:
- Apple Watch: place it on the charger and use the side-button and Digital Crown erase sequence.
- Pixel Watch: use Fastboot and Recovery, then choose Wipe Data or Factory Reset.
- Samsung: use Samsung’s supported Find or recovery options. If Auto factory reset was enabled, 20 failed attempts can trigger it.
- Huawei: follow the reset option shown by the watch or Huawei’s forgotten-PIN support page.
- Fitbit and Garmin: use the exact model’s official instructions.
Afterward, an ownership check may still require the previous Apple Account, Google Account, or another registered account.
The old phone is gone
You can often reset the watch directly without the old phone, but the consequences differ:
- Apple Watch: direct erasure works, but Activation Lock remains. Remove the watch from the owner’s Apple account separately.
- Wear OS and Pixel Watch: reset from the watch or use recovery mode. When pairing with a new phone, remove any old Bluetooth entry that remains.
- Samsung: unpair Bluetooth where possible; use the recovery procedure when the old phone is inaccessible.
- Fitbit, Garmin, and Huawei: model and companion-account behavior varies. Reset the device and remove it from the relevant account where the manufacturer provides that option.
The reset finished but pairing still fails
- Restart both the phone and the watch.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and the phone has an internet connection.
- Remove the old watch entry from the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Forget or disconnect the watch in the companion app.
- Update the phone, watch, and companion app.
- Reinstall the companion app if its support instructions recommend it.
- Confirm the watch is showing its initial setup screen.
- Pair through the app’s Add device flow.
- Enter the previous account credentials if the platform requests verification.
Google’s Pixel Watch pairing troubleshooting specifically recommends forgetting listed watch devices, restarting the phone, and retrying the setup process.
The buyer still sees the previous owner’s account
The previous owner must fix this. Do not suggest bypass tools or ask the buyer to defeat the lock.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a factory reset delete everything on a smartwatch?
It normally deletes everything stored locally on the watch, including apps, settings, downloaded content, wallet credentials, and unsynced activity. It does not necessarily delete cloud-synced health history, the owner’s account, a carrier subscription, or an activation lock.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does resetting a smartwatch delete health data from the cloud?
Usually not. Data that already synchronized to Apple Health, Google, Fitbit, Garmin Connect, Huawei Health, Samsung Health, or another account may remain there. Use that service’s account and data-management controls if you also want to delete cloud history.
Does a factory reset cancel the watch’s cellular plan?
Not reliably. eSIM removal and carrier-plan cancellation are separate actions. Apple, Pixel, Samsung, and Huawei handle eSIMs differently, so check the reset screen and confirm the subscription status with the carrier.
Can I factory-reset a smartwatch without its phone?
Often yes, using the watch’s Settings menu or recovery mode. Apple Watch is the important caveat: erasing it directly without the paired iPhone leaves Activation Lock enabled, so it is not the preferred method for a sale or gift.
Can I reset a smartwatch if I forgot the PIN?
Generally yes, but the supported recovery procedure usually erases the watch. Afterward, Apple, Google, or Samsung may require the previously registered account credentials as an ownership check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I unpair the watch before or after factory-resetting it?
For a sale or gift, use the manufacturer’s official companion-app handoff process first when available. Apple’s iPhone Unpair Apple Watch workflow both erases the watch and removes Activation Lock. On other platforms, follow the model-specific instructions rather than assuming that a Bluetooth disconnect removes the account lock.
Can I recover workouts that had not synchronized before the reset?
Usually not. A reset removes local data, and unsynced workouts, sleep records, and health measurements may be lost. Sync and verify the latest records in the companion app before wiping.
Why is the watch still asking for the old owner’s account after it was reset?
The reset erased local data but did not remove an ownership lock or account association. The previous owner must complete the official unpairing or account-removal process. A buyer should not attempt to bypass the verification.
Is restarting the same as factory-resetting?
No. Restarting or force-rebooting is intended to preserve data. A factory reset erases local data, restores default settings, and normally requires setup and pairing again.

What should I do if the watch is stuck on the logo during reset?
Charge it, try the official restart or force-restart sequence, and then use the exact model’s recovery reset if necessary. If it remains stuck or has signs of physical damage, contact the manufacturer; a factory reset cannot repair faulty hardware.
The Bottom Line
The safest rule is: identify the model, sync and back up, separate the account and eSIM steps from the wipe, then reset using the official brand-specific procedure. For a handoff, the job is not finished until the watch shows its setup screen, no previous-owner lock appears, the device is removed from the old account, and cellular service has been intentionally kept, transferred, or canceled.
