Apple ordinarily routes a notification to either the iPhone or the Watch, not both: alerts generally go to the iPhone when it is unlocked and to the Watch when the iPhone is locked or asleep, unless the Watch is locked. Focus settings can also limit which apps may notify you. Use the steps below to distinguish a routing issue from disabled WhatsApp alerts or a connection problem.
1. Allow WhatsApp notifications on the iPhone
On the iPhone, open Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp and turn on Allow Notifications. Check that the alert locations and sounds you want are enabled.
Also open WhatsApp on the iPhone and review its notification settings. Check the relevant message, group, and call notification types, since iPhone device settings can override notification choices made inside WhatsApp.

2. Enable WhatsApp alerts in the Watch app
On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app, select Notifications, and turn on WhatsApp under the option to mirror iPhone alerts. Menu wording can vary slightly by software version. WhatsApp must be allowed on the iPhone as well as enabled for mirroring.
3. Test with the iPhone locked and the Watch unlocked
- Keep the iPhone powered on and close to the Watch.
- Lock or let the iPhone screen go to sleep, and make sure the Watch is unlocked.
- Ask someone to send a new WhatsApp message or call, then check the Watch.
If the alert appears on the Watch only after the iPhone is locked, Apple’s notification routing explains the behavior. If it still does not appear, check WhatsApp’s notification settings, Focus settings, and the connection.

4. Check the connection and Focus settings
Keep the iPhone and Watch within range, and make sure Bluetooth is enabled and the Watch is connected to the iPhone. Check whether a Focus mode is limiting notifications from WhatsApp. If the connection appears to be working but the WhatsApp Watch app will not load or sync, close and reopen WhatsApp on the Watch.
5. Check WhatsApp compatibility
WhatsApp’s Help Center lists Apple Watch Series 4 or newer, watchOS 10 or newer, iOS 9.1 or newer, and the latest WhatsApp version as requirements for WhatsApp on Apple Watch. These are the requirements in the cited guidance; check WhatsApp’s current listing and help page for any changes.

Meta announced the Apple Watch app on November 4, 2025, with message reading, written and voice replies, reactions, media, and call notifications. Older hardware or software that does not meet the stated requirements may not support the Watch app.
6. Restart and update, then reinstall the Watch app if needed
If notifications and connection settings look correct, work through WhatsApp’s recovery steps in order. Check after each step so you can tell which action helped.

- Close and reopen WhatsApp on the Watch.
- Restart the Watch, then restart the iPhone.
- Update WhatsApp and watchOS to the latest versions available for your devices.
- If the problem remains, reinstall WhatsApp on the Watch. Keep the iPhone nearby while recent chats sync; this can take a few minutes.
